NBA Offseason

^Don't forget the tank job in Game 7 of the 97 World Series. :p:lol:

And if you were a Browns fan, wouldn't you just be a Ravens fan now? And I agree the current incarnation of the Browns sucks a sweaty one.

Say you're LeBron James. You could play in Chicago (with its horribly high state income tax rate)

Wait, what? :wtf:

If you want to use Florida's lack of a state income tax as a selling point for the Heat, that's fine. But Illinois' state income tax doesn't come close to being anything resembling high. I should know since moving to Illinois from California dropped my state taxes by about 66%.

Yeah I mentioned the meltdown/97 series. I skipped a week of classes after that one but all my professors understood, and this was at Univ. of Memphis :). ugh don't even get me started on the Ravens. Imagine in 2000 the Red Sox leave Boston for Delaware, but you got to "keep the colors and history of the team". A few years later, the new Red Sox are reborn in Boston and are horrible, but the "Delaware Demons" win the World Series. How would that make you feel? yeah it sux!

Illinois' state income tax rate is three percent (maybe 4.5 percent, if Quinn can get the legislature on his side). That, plus federal taxes, represents a significant chunk of change.

...which is still far less than most states that have income taxes for those in higher tax brackets according to the PDF document in my post. Look at the highest brackets for New York, New Jersey and Ohio (the other teams in the LeBron race) for a comparison. Chicagoans get completely reamed on sales tax...is that what you're thinking of?

Back on topic--update from one of my friends:

BREAKING NEWS! Apple is releasing a special edition LeBron James iPhone. Problem is it only vibrates b/c it has no RING! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know. I hate the Red Sox. I'd love it, mostly to see friends and coworkers squirm. Bad analogy.

Sorry Smoothie, I saw your location and simply assumed you were a member of RedSox Nation, my apologies. However, I am sure you can see what I was getting at :)

No, I'm a Mets fan. They're giving me half a reason to cheer this year.

I sat through one of their NLCS games in 2006 in person when they blew a lead while I was taking a piss and lost the game. Game 7 of that series still chaps my ass when I think about it.

Until they turned into a joke, I loved the Knicks growing up. Got to see some hot ticket games at MSG as a teen, including a couple playoff games. Then they went into tank mode and have been a joke for the last several years. The fact that they have mortgaged the farm for 2 years in an attempt to get LeBron drove me away. At least try to be competitive. I ended up rooting for Orlando isntead. Bring up the Charles Smith game and my blood pressure still goes up.

As for football, I've been hungover since the last few minutes of Superbowl XLII. My wife refuses to admit that game ever happened. All we got to cheer for after that were a couple of blown out knees to bookend the 08 and 09 seasons. Fuck you Bernard Pollard.

Guys, I think I just saw Cleveland disappear off the face of the Earth.

The meltdowns are hilarious.

How much alcohol do you think Byron Scott has plowed through in the past hour?

http://www.nba.com/cavaliers/news/gilbert_letter_100708.html

I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.
Somebody please tell me this site was hacked and this wasn't really written by the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In comic sans, no less. :wtf:

That makes no sense but I guess he had to say something in lieu of the loss they just took. I don't know why James had to do a one hour special to make this announcement. Maybe it was ESPN's idea and not his but he still shouldn't have gone along with it.

Having said that, I think this whole free agency off season is going to be a big ratings boom for the NBA next season. I honestly haven't been this excited about an upcoming basketball season in awhile. More then enough to help me forget about my hatred for the Lakers. I seriously wish I had invested in some Miami season tickets. I live nowhere near FL and had no intention of going to the games but I could probably sell them for two, three or even four times face value.

It's funny because a lot of people have said Basketball died today because it's the end of parity.

Ah, the business of sports is always better than sports itself.

The obvious blueprint for this is the Boston Celtics with the view that Bosh, James, and Wade are younger then Garnett, Pierce, and Allen were so they'll have a longer run at the top. I am not so sure. The Celtics players seemed to complement each other more. Garnett was a very unselfish player and Allen and Pierce had gotten past the point of needing to be the man. With Wade and James together that my be a prime example of a team needing two balls just to accommodate them. Bosh will have to sacrifice a lot of his scoring and he is nowhere near the passer Garnett is.

Well damn, its the morning after "the decision" and the sun still rose here in Cleveland. The city didn't implode. People still woke up and went to work. In the end, not much has changed. So Lebron broke our hearts by going through his dog and pony show on national TV and now there is no way we will win an NBA title in the next few years. So what? we hadn't won anything with him for the past seven. Yes I wish he had stayed, he had promised this city a championship and he left before fulfilling it. People break promises all the time, its nothing new.

However, I do think "the king" has burned his bridges here. He can never come back. He is on that list with Art Modell. Lets face it, the only reason Modell is not in the Football Hall of Fame is because it is in Ohio. By his merits alone, Modell deserves to be in, but the NFL knows what would happen if he were ever to be inducted, so he doesn't get the votes. James is now on that list as well, he has betrayed a city, not by leaving, we are used to that too, but in the way he conducted himself in the process. I have always like Tim Duncan for his loyalty he stayed in a smaller market and won titles, that could have been Lebron. I have never liked Kobe, but I will say this for him, he has stayed loyal (well to his team anyway).

Next year I will root for the Cavaliers again, it will be like the bad years when the Gund was empty. My wife and I would buy tickets to the upper bowl and wait for halftime, the ushers would come around and punch peoples tickets to go down courtside, try to make the arena look more full for TV, damn I wish the Indians would do that. When Shaq left Orlando in 96, I am sure it looked like the end of the world for the Magic. Yeah it has taken more than a decade, but look at the Magic now. You never know what tommorow may bring, and so once again we here in Cleveland are left waiting for next year.

So who do the Cavs still have on their team? And, without LeBron, do they have cap space?

The Eastern Conference is abyssmal. They'll still probably be a 6 seed or so in the playoffs. Outside of Boston, Orlando, and Miami, there's not much. They'll be a middling team like the Bucks or Bobcats.

You know who I feel bad for today? Byron Scott.

So who do the Cavs still have on their team? And, without LeBron, do they have cap space?

They'll have about $12 million in space after waiving Delonte West, which seems guaranteed at this point.

I do have to laugh at Dan Gilbert freaking out on the Cavaliers' Web site and insisting that his team, with no one on the roster, will win a championship before the new Miami powerhouse does. Good luck with that, guy; no one wanted to play in Cleveland while LeBron was in town, and you think you're going to rise to the top now that he's gone? The Cavaliers will be lucky to win half their games next season.

Even if he was kinda douchey and made it somewhat rough on the Cavaliers' fans, LeBron hasn't done anything wrong to Gilbert or the organization. He played extremely well for the duration of his contract, making the team more profitable than it had ever been in the process, and then left when that contract was up, as is his right as a free agent. He certainly could have handled his free agency better (and letting Jim Gray talk him / his representatives into this whole "The Decision" idea was a pretty big mistake), but he didn't betray the Cavaliers, the city of Cleveland or Dan Gilbert himself in any way.

Toying with the idea at the moment, I'm on the waiting list, at least (they're rumored to be releasing more season tickets soon), so who knows? Gonna be tough to shell out that kind of money, but could be big...
