Naveen Andrews (from JJ's Lost) as KHAN

I think having Garth or maybe a re-imagined Kor as the villains of the next Trek film would be nice.

Either actor would be great. Andrews would have the advantage due to his association with Bad Robot via Lost, but I prefer Bardem because of his intensity in NCFOM

I didn't see this thread when I started my khan thread but my choice for Khan would be Antonio Banderas. I think he has the right look and intensity to be khan.

Banderas is totally wrong. I don't think he's a particularly great actor, and he doesn't have that menacing quality about him, and I thought he was always miscast when he was playing dangerous macho man in Hollywood. He never played those kind of roles in Spain - his career in Spain consisted of playing weird nerdy young guys, totally insane but sort of good-natured young guys, confused and neurotic weird young guys, etc. And he was much better in those roles. It's only when he came to Hollywood, he started playing Macho Latinos, because that's the stereoype Hollywood has about Spanish men. Bardem, OTOH, is good at playing macho guys, villains and dangerous men, but he can also played very different roles, because he is a better actor.

Naveen Andrews, OTOH, would be perfect - instead of playing Montalban, he'd be playing Khan as he was described and supposed to be, rather than what we saw on screen: 1) of Indian origin, 2) highly intelligent, charming and manipulative - rather than flamboyant and obviously bad/insane, as Montalban's Khan was. Andrews can be charming and seductive, and would be able to look rational and calm even when doing or planning insane things (these are all qualities he's shown as Sayid in LOST), and he could appear as someone who's convince people to trust and follow him because he knows what he is doing.

That is - if they decide to bring back Khan. Which I don't think they should. But if they do, make it a completely different story, and a completely different portrayal (see above).

I'd prefer Khan being left out of the new movies, but if they do bring him in, Andrews would indeed be perfect.

He needs to pull off the right balance of camp and menace:

With a serious actor like Naveen Andrews, Khan would not need to be campy. Humor in Trek is good but the less camp, the better. I see nothing funny about Khan and certainly see no reason for him to be campy.

Banderas isn't a bad actor, but I just don't see why he in particular should be selected for the role. He doesn't look Indian, for starters. If you don't care about looks, cast anyone. Brad Pitt, whoever. :rommie:

Andrews would be a great choice if they decide to go down the Khan route. I suspect that Orci and Kurtzman will bow to studio pressure to have a previous villain, which will bring in the general public. Khan seems likely for Trek XII.

I never thought about Javier Bardem for the part before. But now that Trekmovie.com has its article up on that topic (Orci & Kurtzman seem to love the idea), I must say I would definitely look forward to that type of remake. Bardem was incredible in No Country For Old Men, the most chilling movie villain since Hannibal Lecter. And he's always this good. I could see him pulling Khan off better than Ricardo Montalban even.

I also become increasingly convinced this is the route the studio will want to go, as per the Batman Begins/Dark Knight scenario: first, an original origin story, next, the sort-of-remake of the franchise's most popular villain. Because one might argue that the whole point of doing a reboot (from a studio's perspective at least) is to be able to go back to what has previously proven successful in that franchise.

yeah i've somewhat cottoned to the idea of khan, as long as it's done in a different way, with an actor who is far more menacing than montalban

Pretty sure Naveen is the only reason I could get interested in a Khan story. I first saw him in "The English Patient." He's got the chops.

They could still yet replace him with Harvey Keitel. ;)

Antonio Banderas doesnt look Indian - also in this day and age, why black someone up, when you can actually cast a decent actor of Indian ethnicity? Seems kinda condescending - there is even talk of casting Brad Pitt as the Buddha, rather than an Indian/Nepali actor, in a new movie.

More pics of Naveen, looking suitably Maharaja-like:

He doesnt really look an Arab, which Sayid is meant to be in Lost. But I guess a lot of people in the States don't really know the difference between India and the Middle East, whereas Indians are more prominent in the UK's culture and history.

I am still not sure that bringing Khan back is the best idea for Star Trek XII - I would rather this new setting be developed as if it were an entirely new space opera - maybe taking a few hints from Iain M Banks, Dan Simmons, Kim Stanley Robsinson and Alistair Reynolds along the way, not to mention Farscape, Firefly, Galactica, etc - without losing that essential Trek 'feel'.
