Back in late 2006, we heard about and saw artwork for a new animated series. Involved were David Rossi, who had worked on several of the previous Trek series and on the TOS "remastering" project, and Doug Mirabello, who was on the Enterprise team. After initial interest was expressed by CBS following the cancellation of Enterprise, some stories and art were developed, but as of November 2008 the project was still waiting for a green light. There was talk of an animated series but it fell through. Start Trek was considered too complex or a crtoon series and was kept in the human acting.
Sounds like bollocks to me. Do you have any links or news stories pertaining to that.
I find the notion that Star trek is "too complex" for animation to be ludicrous.
On another note, the reasons for no animation series may be partly due to the failure of the original animated series. But that is just a guess.

I think part of the issue with the show was timeframe. It was supposed to take place even FURTHER in the future with the Federation breaking down around the crew of the new Enterprise. Not only was it a rip on another certain sci fi show (which it's self was originally intended as a possible Trek show by Gene though it ended up being thrown aside for decades before his death.) but for a cartoon, IS pretty heady.
