Nana Visitor as Kira

Wasn't Kira supposed to be in her late 20's (26?) during Season One of DS9??? The actress that played her character, Nana Visitor, was 36. Rather than having a younger actor play Kira, I think that the character should have been older. It makes more sense for the highest ranking Bajoran officer on DS9 to be in her 30's (if not in her 40's). Does anyone agree?

They specified Nerys' age?

News to me, but my DS9 memory ain't what it used to be. :)

Probably ret-conned by some tweenie exec who thinks that 26 is old enough to be a Major. They probably can't imagine anyone even relating to a character who is really ancient (like, about 30 or something).

I coulda swore they did. But then again I can't remember where I got that from. Maybe the main Star Trek web-site??? I'll have to check...

The Star Trek web-site says that Kira was born in 2343. The First Season of DS9 took place in 2369, which makes Kira 26.

I don't know if they ever mentioned what year she was born in any episode or if people just figured out the math (as it is clearly shown on the Star Trek web-site). Anyways, I still think she was a little young to be Second-in-Command of DS9!

I don't think Kira's age or birthdate was ever mentioned. Except one episode could've had some indication. The episode where Kira goes back in time to find out about her mother and we see Kira as a little girl, maybe three or four years old. Did they say how far back in time she went?

Wrongs Darker Than Death or Night. It was about thirty years before 2374, if the dating of TNG and DS9 is accurate. There's one huge fact people seem to gloss over when they hear Kira's age - she's freakin' Bajoran! Maybe they age faster?

Well, their days are longer than ours, so it could just be a timekeeping issue...

Well, here's one way to look at it, the Bajoran Militia was created after the end of the occupation. Kira was likley among the first hoard to join, she had a long list of attacks on the Cardassians from her time with the Shakaar resistence cell, she likely had more training than most other Bajorans in fighting and strategy, since most bajorans were subjegated. She had waged land battles and space battles.

Also, She was 12 when she started fighting, which means she had 14 years experience by that point.

Young to be in such a position? Quite possibly, but it makes sense to me that Kira could wind up in such a position under such circumstance.

In "The Maquis", she tells Sisko she lived with the Cardassians for 26 years. If they've been gone for a year or two, she's 27-28.

Could she have a high-up position? She seems to have found a lot of friends who became powerful once the Cardassians left.

Does Nana pull it off? You bet she does. ;)

Let's not forget that before the discovery of the wormhole, DS9 was a bit of a backwater. Kira comes across as not the easiest of people to work with (as her very first scene in Emissary shows), so maybe the higher-ups in the Militia wanted her out of the way without completely ignoring her experience. Sure she's a very young second in command, but she's second in command of something that's mostly useless.

Of course, that bit them in the behind once the wormhole was found...

Are we talking about the same "friends" in the Provisional Government who sent Kira to DS9 to get rid of her? The same friends she was always yelling at on the communicator?

People seem to forget right at the beginning being assigned to DS9 was not a plum assignment.

The actress is my age, so she'd have been 34 when DS9 premiered. Anyway, in a guerrilla war everything's up for grabs... the best fighters would probably get the best positions later, whatever their ages.

^ But that "guerilla war" was over when DS9 just began. Yes, the Cardassians had just left Bajor, but they were gone nonetheless.

In most guerrilla wars there is a period where the guerrilla's settle old scores and via for influence some time before the enemies even left, maybe Kira's cell recognised th importance of Terrok Nor?

Before the wormhole was discovered what was so important about Terok Nor?

Beat me to it... Kira's responsibility at such a young age makes perfect sense, given the circumstances.

Well, of course. And the war heroes get the plum jobs after the war.
