Name the Alternate Universe!

PK = Post-Kelvin
PRK = Pre-Kelvin
PTL = Primetimeline
ATL = Alt-timeline

:) Not serious, but hey, those are my efforts...

:cool:

Well, to be completely anal about the whole thing...

TOS used timetravel in 4 episodes:

Tomorrow is yesterday
Assignment Earth
Wink of an Eye
City on the edge of Forever.
And, if you must, Mirror Mirror (dimensional travel)

Now, given the logic used in this movie, every timetravel incedent creates an alternate timeline, and that even if you repair it, it is still alternate as the events are slightly altered/delayed.

so, in essence, TOS created 4 alternate timelines, 5 if you include Voyage Home. So, thats 5 alternate timelines that have been either greatly altered or only slightly.

But thats still 5 timelines running paralel against each other with events happening at different stages or not at all.

So, does that mean 5 timelines are running from the prime one, that makes 6 of them.

It now makes 7 after Nero went back and kickstarted the new one. :confused:

Now, with that mind bending, wibbly wobbly timey wimey theory over, id call it, err, i duno...

The Universe Created By Spock

Spocko

I also like Alphaverse and Betaverse. Also, I can't seem to find a word anywhere in the English language that would best describe something that serves secondary to something being referred to as prime. Like what's the opposite of the word prime?

Yeah, i looked too. There's no good word in English.

If we like 'beta' for the new timeline then I prefer the 'Alpha/Beta' combo vs 'Prime/Beta'. It's just more logical. :vulcan: And it's good and geeky sounding. And you can keep going through the alphabet as successive timelines are spawned.

Since there seems to be at least some convergence around "Prime" referring to Spock & the Classic Universe, it wold be nice to have a way to say "Second" in a way that has the same ring as "prime". "Second", "Third" etc, linguistically succeed "Prime", but those are awkward sounding.

I think the best you can do with "Prime" is to succeed it with "II".
I'm good with Spock/Kirk/Bones 'Prime' and 'II' for characters and 'Trek Prime' and 'Trek II' timeline/universe/reality. Though that might create some confusion with WOK, you could probably tell from the context. Technology could be Transporter 'Prime' and Transporter 'II'

I don't love "Nu" but it is catchy/catching. From what I see on other threads, it's looking like we will have a hybrid designation of "Classic" or "Prime" on the one hand and "Nu" on the other. Even though I don't love it, I actually want to use it because it's just so easy and we all know what we're talking about. But then what do you do when the nu becomes old?? (since "nu" is also a greek letter, you could maybe pick up the alphabet from there?)

I also like the 1.0 and 2.0 for the the two main universes/timelines, but I think using 1.1, 1.2 for the different series is a little confusing, since they can't so much apply to the characters/technologies.

There's nothing wrong with Abramverse per se, but a lot of the time you just need to talk about things 'in-universe' and if you're always referring to realworld authorship, it kinda breaks the 4th wall.

I don't like tying the whole timeline to Nero/Narada, even to those of us who liked the movie, the character is just too forgettable to have a whole timeline named after him.

And I really don't like just calling the whole thing "alternative" since it's just so amorphous and non-specific. It's kind of just throwing it in there with the all the other short-lived spinoff timelines from various series and other movies. Alt Uhura or Alt Enterprise could be any alternative. At least with the "mirror" designation, we know the exact universe. With any kind of "alt" i think you'd still have to specify that it's "The Alternative" that we're in now.

anyway ...
these are ones I'd be okay with:

Prime - II
Alpha - Beta
1.0 - 2.0
Classic - II
Prime - Nu

Given that his death apparently affects the following: Uniforms, Ship Design, Planetary Placement, When ships are built, The Birth of Chekov, Emblems, Knowing about the Romulan-Vulcan connection, Turbolift speed, Scotty being a tit, Starfleet Incompetance, Academy Instructors Attitudes to Cheating and many other things, i propose the new timeline should be called George

So you aren't okay with Old Trek - Star Trek? Why not?

Hmmm, I forgot about that ... I think I thought my post was getting too long, and figured I'd just leave it at that.

The argument can definitely be made ... Since the "Star Trek" we have now is, well, the one we have now.

I dunno ... after a few more movies, I actually think it might move that way ... but since the current universe is really in its infancy, I guess I'm not feeling ready to pass the mantle just yet. I think it needs to be populated and fleshed out a little more first. It's kind of just an outline. It needs a little more heft.

Maybe after Spock Prime dies, and there's no more living connection to classic universe ... then maybe we can seal the vault? Somehow I don't think so, though. I'm sure there'll be more infiltrators from the old world.

And when we say "old" we're also talking about TNG, DS9, and VOY ... which are all future to where we are now. That hurts my brain a little.

I guess for me it comes down to: the new movie universe right now is just too small to be 'THE' Star Trek. Like the NuBSG is has now become 'THE' BSG ... that might happen with the new Trek, but they'll have to do a bunch more work to earn it.

Michael Chris had it right on page 1. The current universe is Star Trek. Everything else is "Trek Classic":
  • Star Trek (TOS)
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • Star Trek: Voyager
  • Star Trek: The Motion Picture
  • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
  • Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
  • Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
  • Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
  • Star Trek: Generations
  • Star Trek: First Contact
  • Star Trek: Insurrection
  • Star Trek: Nemesis

I like Neroverse or Naradaverse, something tied to the creation of this reality. Alpha/Beta, Prime/Nu conjure images of only two universes, which from Parallels we know is incorrect. Besides Parallels, I count at least Two Mirrior Universes, the "Yesterday's Enterprise" universe and I have my suspicions if Enterprise existed in the same reality as the other series, for example why would the Borg have been a surprise in "Q Who?"

We've got the normal Trek universe we're used to. We've got the Mirror Universe. Now...what name should we give this new Star Trek? Abramsverse? Nero-verse? The 'Verse of Two Spocks?

We need a name for this new Star Trek universe!

Bullshit works for me.
