It's just that the word "oldTrek" has by now been stored in the muscle memory of my hands, so I can't promise I'll actually use "primeTrek".

Well, IMHO, a parallel universe (or universes) is something that has unique characteristics that are far different from its own kind or signifies other "genres"; e.g., you have the Star Wars universe, Harry Potter universe, Terminator universe, or even the parallel universes in TNG's "Parallels."
An alternate timeline may occur in one universe but has a different set of historical or sequential events, often the consequence of time travel.
