Mythbusters To Test Star Trek’s Gorn Cannon

They have to armor up Buster in alligator hide for the myth to be truly tested..

that's a lot of cowboy boots to cut up..

So, any word on when this will air? We're already 7 or 8 eps into Mythbusters this season. I figured they would try to do it in sync with the DVD release of the film.

The only thing I can glean from tv.com is it won't be the next one, that's about western stuff... on the 16th it's about "hidden nasties", what ever the hell that is...It says dirt and movie myths... Hate to break it to ya trek fans, but it looks like we are going to get hosed wit the Gorn cannon... maybe next season, if we're lucky. :(

^What do you mean, "hosed"? Television production takes time. (For instance, Kari gave birth over five months ago, but her last pre-maternity-leave episode only aired a couple of weeks ago.) It was never guaranteed that it would air this season, so they're not cheating anyone. If it isn't in this batch of new episodes, it'll probably show up early in the next one.

What do you mean by what do I mean by hosed?! HOSED! As in we won't be getting it this month! We are excited and want to see it. Is that a problem for you, some of us would like it sooner than later? I'm fully aware TV production takes time... are you trying to be smug or something?

We're talking about a cable science series, not a typical episodic television show. Some of these gags take months to fully set up, so it's likely they're not slated into specific episodes when they go into production; they're fit into episodes when they're ready for air, and not before.

To clarify: They've got a set list of myths they want to test in a given season, and a set number of episodes for that season. A certain number of those experiments will be ready in time for the season premiere, and they'll be able to put together an episode, but others take longer for reasons beyond their control. Things go wrong, requiring a do-over, a certain location is unavailable for a time, requiring them to wait (which is quite possible in this case; to really set the scene, they're gonna want to shoot a portion of this at Vasquez Rocks, which, in case anyone's noticed, has been getting some use recently as the studios rediscover the location, most notably NCIS and CSI, plus the issue of weather; if it's lousy, they ain't gonna tape that day).

In cases like that, it doesn't matter that they had this myth planned since the beginning of the season, it's not gonna air until it's ready.

... are you trying to be smug or something?

Why are people online so quick to impute hostile or ad hominem motives to simple requests for information? My understanding of the word "hosed" is that it means cheated, betrayed, or violated. I assume it's a veiled reference to the male genitalia and thus has the underlying sense of a sexual violation. So when you described the lack of prompt airing in such terms, it implied that you believed there was some sort of betrayal or violation involved, as if they had made a promise of near-term airing on which they failed to deliver. That puzzled me, so I sought clarification.

That is so funny. Please somebody alert us when the episode is scheduled. I don't generally watch Mythbusters.

[Deliverance Guy] Gee, you talk purty! [/Deliverance Guy]
:)

I guess I'll just continue to be patient. I really didn't have a specific time frame in mind when this was announced.

It looks like from the TV schedule that this episode will not air until the spring since it isn't listed for this month.

Come, now, Christopher -- I love your books, but aren't you being a bit disingenuous and needlessly argumentative here?

You were clearly refuting the validity of his claim to being "hosed" (as if someone's personal, emotional reaction should be subject to rational argument!) by pointing out that TV production takes time, and perhaps you felt you were disseminating wisdom or defending the truth and fighting for justice or something, but you were certainly not simply requesting information - "what do you mean 'hosed'?" was obviously a rhetorical question, given its context. As a prolific author I would expect you to recognize that - the original poster certainly did.

People might be "so quick" to impute hostile motives (sounds like this has happened to you before?) because there might actually be something a little hostile in an attempt to correct someone's online lament (however "illogical") that they felt let-down by something not coming out as soon as they'd like! Perhaps you need to re-assess your actual motives for writing before you claim to be the innocent party in such an exchange, because correct or not, your response does come off as a bit smug (and yes, it takes one to know one!).

No, it was not a rhetorical question. I genuinely did not understand why he would interpret it as a betrayal or cheat, which is my understanding of the meaning of the word "hosed." Perhaps he was using the slang term in a different sense than I understand it; slang is not my first language. But either way, I didn't understand what he meant by the usage, and if a person is confused about something, why is it wrong to ask for clarification?

And I don't have to justify myself to you. You and I are strangers. You've never met me. You don't know who I am and how I think. You don't know what emotions I was experiencing when I wrote my post, because such information is very difficult to discern in printed text. You're jumping to negative conclusions based on a gross lack of evidence, and you have no right to condemn me in ignorance. If you think I'm the one being smug and judgmental, I think you're just projecting your own faults onto me. Get your own house in order before you arrogate to yourself the right to condemn others. And welcome to my ignore list.

My goodness, all over the word "hosed"?! Would it help if I simply said it's going to take longer than I personally thought it would to air and I wish it were coming out sooner...

BTW, slang isn't my first language, English is, as I've been speaking it the whole time. ;)

Now, lets stop flipping each other to ignore over nothing and enjoy some conversation related to Trek.

My biggest fear is the Mythbusters will do what they do with several myths, go way off course and just do whatever they want or can to get the desired effect. It is my hope they stay as authentic as possible. Oh, and of course I want a ballistic gel Gorn!

Peace, friends? :)
