My thoughts on the movie and on Checkov

Oh yeah - I cannot believe how many times I see Kahn. Always makes me think of Spielberg's editor, Michael Kahn.

Oh and re:Uhura. I was reading another site the other day where this guy reviewed the film and his whole blog was based around him being a fan since day one - watched the first ep, all you young 'n's don't know what it was like, blah blah blah. Then he goes and talks about Uhuru's performance in the new film.

I love the new Chekov - I like the wunderkind aspect to the character, and his eagerness in every scene is infectious, it makes me want to root for him. The bit when he runs through the ship yelling "I can do that! I can do that!" the whole way is great. I really hope they develop Chekov more in the sequels.

...it would make sense that Chekov was just a younger cadet, say a first year, that was showing an aptitude that got him assigned to that station.

Chekovproudly) "I'm seventeen" McCoy:"Great we're okay then, he's seventeen" I'm paraphrasing of course but thought he was so different from Walter Koenig's Chekov yes strangely familiar.. The actor was a breath of 'fresh air' to the character... wonderful!

Actually, that was from Generations.

Anyway, I found the whole V and W reversal was overdone in this movie. It never really stood out in Trek Classic until Trek IV, and that's the primary reason why the Nuclear Wessel line is so memorable. But here they seemed to go out tof their way to make sure Chekov always said a V or W sound so they could have him use the opposite letter. Although I do admit the "Wictor" thing was kind of amusing, the joke was so totally overdone.

Another thing to remember is these people were put into service on this ship before being thoroughly checked out on operating it.

Naturally Chekov wouldn't normally be in a position he was without being taught not to mispronounce letters but there wasn't time. It also explains Sulu's mistake with the dampeners. Like in GEN, they had to grow up sooner than normal.

This movie's Chekhov was the way TNG's Wesley Crusher should have been done; very bright but, not the deux ex machina. In his miraculous transporter pull not everyone was saved.

We could go on all day about the comic Russian accent. I would imagine any native Russian watching TOS would do the and think of Chekhov like their Amos n' Andy.

Before seeing the movie, I knew I would probably like all the actors' portrayals of the classic characters, with the exception of Chekov, but it turned out I liked it a lot. Well done.

If Chekov were a [strike]Weasly[/strike] Wesley, it'd be hating his guts instead of enjoying the enthusiasm and humor he brought to the screen. Yes, I thought the accent was a bit overblown.

I don't think it's Anton Yelchin (sp?) real accent. I've heard him in interviews.

Chekov was a very popular character in TOS and in TOS movies; there was no way he wasn't going to be in a movie that wanted to appeal to a wide audience. It took until my second viewing to kind of warm up to Anton, but I'm on board now. He's kinda adorable.

i thought checkov's character was too forced. he didn't fit seamless like the rest of the characters. he seemed more alien than the real aliens.
