Well, today my son made the Holy Sacrament Of First Holy Communion.

He attends a small Catholic school, and it was a really nice service. There are only 25 kids in his class, one of which is his cousin, my sister's daughter.

I had him wear a suit. He wanted to wear a tux, but I told him no, his suit was fine. "But Papi, everyone is going to be wearing a tux!" That is fine, they can wear tux, You are still wearing your suit.

He thought about it for a second, then he asked me if he could wear a tux at his next Sacrament? I thought about for a second, and told him not only can he wear one, it almost a requirement. (He has already been baptised, had confession, he was confirmed, and now recieved his first communion.)

So, if you are keeping score, there are only 3 Sacraments left, Holy Orders and/or Marriage, and anoiting of the sick. So unless he remains single, or becomes a priest, his next Sacrament should be Marriage.

ON the way over to service, we had a long drive ( We live 22 miles from his school/Church). I let him know that since we had only a few days notice that the event was this Saturday, we didn't have much planned out. On a side not, people were upset that we didn't get much notice. But, the teacher pointed out to the class schedule she passed out at the begginging of the year, as well as the monthly calender she passes out at the beggining of each month stated the date and time (But who really reads all that stuff) . So, we didn't have much planned, just some cake and ice cream and punch at the school cafeteria, with pictures with the priest and God Parents. Aftewards we went to my sister's house for lunch) she lives around the corner of the church.

I told him, that we can go any where he wants tomorrow, it is his day, and he can choose anywhere he wants. (Thinking he was going to pick a restaurant) He looks right at me and states "I want to visit Grandma in the cemetery"....man the tears just started pouring out.....
Well, I pulled the side of the road, and reached into my pocket, and pulled out a little box. He opened it up, and inside with a very nice Rosary and a little note. The note was written by my mother before she passed away. It said to give him the rosary for his First Holy Communion. We told him that when the doctor told her she was sick, she bought you this rosary, and told us to wait until for this event. He was just stunned, and gave me a great big hug.

At that moment, I could feel my mother was with us.......

I was raised Methodist, so Communion wasn't as big a deal. We also aren't allowed to have alcohol (as a college student, I can't say I abide by that rule too much, haha), so we had grape juice.

Lemme tell you, grape juice and Communion wafers (you dip them in the juice!) make a delicious snack.

I'm agnostic now, if you couldn't tell.

Anyway, enough of my blasphemy. Congratulations to your son!

When's the wedding? Will there be cake?

Congratulations to you and your son on this joyous day! What a wonderful thing that your Mom had done. My DD has a rosary from my Mom who passed on a few years after her First Holy Communion. It is very special to her also.

A question if you don't mind. How old is he. Here in NY you recieve communion in second grade and confirmation in 7th. You said he already was confirmed??

Good story PK thanks for sharing and props to your son for wanting to visit Grand Ma. Just surprising he was confirmed before making his 1st communion.

That's a great story. Congrats to you and your family.

I still have the Rosary my grandmother gave me at my Confirmation.

It's a nice keepsake that brings good memories of her.

Peace be with you.

That is wonderful, PhoenicianKnight, and a beautiful occasion. May you and your family be doubly blessed today. :)

PK,

God Bless your son and your family. You are a credit to the Faith. And don't mind the people that pollute your thread with anti-Christian remarks. They are separated from God and they cannot help themselves.

Best,

TLS

^For almost ever it was 1st Communion at about age 7 then Confirmation at about age 12 for Catholics...but it's not written in stone like most Catholic dogma...

...and that was not a complaint just an observation.

Yeah, traditionally that's how we do it as well. But since as far as I know, communion isn't a requirement for confirmation, I guess it can go in any order.

edit: oh and of course, congrats and mazel tov

Congratulations to you and your son, Pk. I am certain that your mother was with you watching both of you.

For the question on the order of confirmation before communion, yes traditionally it was out of order. And the quetion was brought up, as stated early , it is not written in stone. The Bishop confirmd the kids, and he had the Catholic school bunch up the 3,4, and 5th grade earlier this year.

Thanks for all the good wishes, we are going to Mass today, my older son is the alterboy, then we are going to visit my mom. Lil Pk jr wants to place a rose there......

Wonderful story, woonderful occassion and such wonderful son(s).

You have done well.

Blessings to you and yours...sounds as if you have had thme in abundance.

I'm not Catholic PK, but I can certainly appreciate the significance of this event. Congrats to you, your son and the rest of your family. :)

Congrats, PK.

Word of encouragement for you ...

Keep in mind that Holy Orders is an impediment to marriage, but marriage is not an impediment to Holy Orders.

Your son could marry, and then pursue the Diaconate, receiving both the sacrament of marriage and the sacrament of Holy Orders. It simply needs to be in this order.
