Spoilers My main suspects for the anomaly.

Is Oros the name of fishhead? I wasn't listening too hard to this one.
EDIT: I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt about fishhead, but at this point I'm not sure that the current writing team is aware of what a red herring even is.

Osric Chau did a great job as Oros. ‪‪I was wondering who he was the entire time, and somewhat surprised to see his name in the credits.

I’ve enjoyed his work on a lot of shows, so it was cool to see him in Trek.
Is that who it was? Wow!

Did they ever mention the species Oros belonged to? I never heard it.
I didn't hear it. I was hoping that if it was a species seen in Trek before, someone here would know it.

Oros did resemble some amphibian/reptile-like aliens we saw sometimes, but it doesn't look like he came from a race we already have seen.

Could the anomaly be connected to the planet killer from TOS Doomsday Machine? I was just watching that and realized that Discovery Season 4 is just a season long remake of Doomsday Machine: planet killing weapon from another galaxy going around destroying planets, with Book in the Matt Decker role.

This is my hope as well. I am a week behind. This could retcom the doomsday machine itself into a derelect older model of mining equipment.

Was there ever a species connected to the Doomsday Machine or a description of its origin? Im still thinking that there is some link to other trek lore that will be discovered.

It will be an entirely new thing. A race of aliens from a universe so dissimilar from ours that they can't even recognize us and all other inhabitants of our galaxy as lifeforms. They are likely to be travelers between universes.

The reason for the Burn is probably one of the most TOS-like and trekkian things Discovery has done. It's a much better reason than having some big bad enemy causing the burn to kill the Federation as so many were predicting. It will never cease to amaze me how some of the fanbase can be so emotionally stunted that they confuse grief and pain with a 'temper tantrum'.
Grief causing the Burn is still lame.
