Spoilers My main suspects for the anomaly.

I won't be too shocked if, Nexus-like it traps the souls of everyone it kills - giving more to Book seeing his nephew on his ship while investigating the anomaly.
:sigh:
Why can't Book seeing his nephew everywhere be the result of trauma? Why does it have to be proof of something else going on?
I don't think it is, but to be fair, this is the same series which had Stamets's hallucinations turn out to be true visions of the future and had Culber be replicated by mycelial matter despite Culber having never especially touched the mycelial network to begin with.

I'm all for the Sphere Builders returning and using a completely different kind of planet-destroying weapon to attempt to dominate the galaxy. The Delphic Expanse may have been a one-shot deal and once it collapsed there was no way to rebuild such a phenomenon and with their Spheres having been destroyed. So later Sphere Builders may have found a new way to strike at the powers of our galaxy by developing a new weapon.
Maybe they figured it's easier to expand once you've killed all your enemies first.

What better way to eradicate your enemies than to take out their base of support / logistics.

Their planets!

With a Hurricane like "Wrecking Ball" that is 5 ly in diameter, it's just a matter of time before all major planets with sentient & sapient life gets wiped out.

It's genius in the most evil of mad scientists ways.

Considering what happened in the third episode of this season which involved a lost civilization, perhaps the DMA is a piece of lost technology from a lost civilization that was found and activated, but because either it was damaged still or not activated properly it started destroying everything instead of keeping its original benign purpose which perhaps was a form of mass terraforming.

Almost like a Doomsday Machine.

I genuinely came on to say this but I hesitated between Brophy and Robou and you got in first

Do not fear. There is no shame in admitting the futility of having to choose between The Broph and The Robau. Because that is a choice that cannot be made.

Being trapped between an irresistable force (Brophy) and an immovable object (Robau) is not a weakness; it is a STRENGTH.

As much as I enjoy Disco, they always stick the landing and come up with the lamest ending. That in mind, I think after the last episode, we'll discover that the anomaly with be created by the doctor's experiment getting out of control.

TPTB producing streaming Trek haven't really nostalgia-mined DS9 like they have TOS, TNG and VOY so I am still in for it being the Prophets/Pa-wraith somehow.
