My Gripes with STID!

...when I go to see a non-Trek film, I don't need to have some big long history between the hero and villain.
Is it a bad thing if there is, other than just for you, and the audience needs to know it? Why - any inherent reason beyond greater commercial viability?

Not at all. But I think we (the fans) take it for granted that everything needs to be strung together.

I go to the big-budget movies because they offer me something that I can't get elsewhere in entertainment: a visual thrill ride. I don't really need to be bogged down in exposition. In The Wrath of Khan, the exposition didn't get in the way of the movie. It took just a couple of lines to run down the who, what, when, where, why and how of Khan's purpose in the film. Star Trek Into Darkness does the same except there is no direct connection to Kirk. People seeing Star Trek for the first time wouldn't be lost watching The Wrath of Khan and I've yet to see anyone who has felt "lost" watching Star Trek Into Darkness.

Yeah, becuase a white British guy totally couldn't be a prince

Uh, sorry, is it somehow your belief that I forgot that white British royalty existed? Do you think you just executed some kind of "gotcha"?

If you don't know what I specifically meant by what I was saying there, why not just ask me, for Khan's sake? These attempted drive-bys of yours are ridiculous.

The character's ethnic background isn't specifically mentioned, but his background more generally is certainly relevant, since his past as an exotic ancient prince

Yeah, becuase a white British guy totally couldn't be a prince

Oh, wait

You were saying.

Seriously being an ancient prince doesn't exactly scream exotic considering a couple of centuries ago Europe was crawling with them.

The primary adjective in that sentence is "Exotic".

Given the fact that royalty is generally associated with Western Europe when referred to in American entertainment, exotic is the key part of that sentence.

Yes, like an exotic dancer for example, you don't expect them to perform the dying swan...

Which amouunts to jack squat as exotic is only something some fans read into having seen a tv episode from 30 years ago that used a supposed ethnicity built on a house of cards and only used as a foot note at best.

Seriously does anyone think Space Seed would have been any different if Khan was a guy called Kaiser Napoleon Cortez who ruled over most of Europe?

Actually it has to do with the performance. You might try reading some of the prior conversation in the thread.

And I mean actually reading, not just looking for opportunities to lob invective. It's pretty amazing that you're still keeping up this hyper-aggressive schtick after having already placed foot in mouth so firmly.

I am fairly sure that Montalban's entire demeanor, bearing, costume, hair style, and skin tone (a suspiciously even brown) was designed to give him an "exotic" flair.

That idea was carried through to STiD where, instead of a fancy costume, they gave him a British accent, which we all know is short hand for "exotic" in American films.

 Actually I think it's a shorthand for Jaguar.

I blame Tom Hiddleston's "We're obsessed with power" for causing the conception of my second child. Because apparently, every time he talks - American women ovulate.

Are we talking about Space Seed or Wrath of Khan?

Because in Wrath of Khan his outfit and look seemed more generic apocalyptic rags than exotic.

I'm drawing a blank on how his Space Seed get-ups were 'exotic'. He wore Enterpise clothing, and a red cover-all. The only other thing was the fish-nets, but based on how they all got changed immediately out of it (except the women of course) I always got the impression that was meant to be some sort of cryostasis suit. Even in the picture from the '90's,' Khan's just wearing his cover-all.

The make-up on the other hand... I never could work out if they had literally painted Montalban, or just lathered him in buckets of fake tan.

Exotic and apocalyptic, like the slums of Calcutta kind of looks.

More like the wasteland of Mad Max.
