My DS9 Rewatch Odyssey

At this point I'm wondering whether the Founders even really cared whether or not the Federation and Tzenkethi went to war, or whether it was more of a test. We never see the Dominion engage in this particular tactic again, and it is arguably a little inconsistent with their normal methods of handling situation.

It's probably safe to assume that having Krajensky get killed wasn't part of the plan though.
They started a war between the Cardassians and Klingons, no?

It's quite ironic, what Odo says to justify the sending of a hundred changeling "babies" into the Alpha Quadrant: "What better way to judge a species, by the way, it treats the young and helpless?"

Well, in the vase of the Founders, it's a species that sends ITS own young and helpless into unknown possibly deadly dangers !!! Talk about being damned by your own rules!!

The drinking age in every state of the USA has been 21 since at least the early 1980s. So Sisko is putting limits on him consistent with that.
Star Fleet is not supposed to represent the USA alone, it's supposed to represent the world and many worlds even. And in the world, the US is a minority. There are plenty of countries where the drinking age is 18 and for some even 16.

I was referring specifically to the taking over a ship via controlling its systems.
Why would they want to focus narrowly on a singular tactic? The Founders' strength comes in part from their ability to sew fear and panic because they cannot be picked out from the population. It makes sense for them to rotate their methods rather than continually doing the same thing, increasing the possibility of detection.

ODO 2: Chief, remember the last time we went kayaking in the holosuites. You had lamb stew for lunch.
O'BRIEN: That's right.
ODO: But you forgot to bring a fork. Anyone could have gotten that information.

--yikes...really? And we think we have a problem with privacy now.

They didn't say it was a Starfleet regulation or Federation law, that was just what Sisko told Jake he could do. Sisko is from New Orleans.

Well, New Orleans' heritage is partly French, and the French like a good wine, especially with lunch or dinner.

Obviously, but the fact that we never hear about the Dominion employing this tactic again suggests to me that they didn't consider it especially effective.

Or not effective with the Federation in this particular instance. The Dominion is all about testing, probing and finding weaknesses. In the above reviewed episode they exposed that quite well. It's not going to war that divides the Federation; it's dismantling trust that will be its undoing.

Last time I checked Ben and Jake didn't live in the USA.

Plus there's one episode, I think it's "In The Cards" where Jake tells his father that he got (publicly) drunk, he was lying but Sisko did not doubt that it happened at that time, so he considered it a real possibility. That means that Jake had unrestricted access to alcohol in spite of his age at the time.

Ben grew up in New Orleans and picked up his feelings for what is appropriate drinking age there. (Granted, the Big Easy is not known for the most stringent enforcement of the drinking laws, but...)
