So now the school kids wearing Star Trek are the ones going around beating up other kids?![]()
I browsed the IMDb message boards for some of the cast, and they are full of posts that sound like they were made by teenagers. Girls who previously were hung up on Twilight have new hotties to gush about.
And in the grand scheme? THAT is a good thing. Far more important than canon and nacells and whether or not 'ships can do that in space'....
Some of our younger male TREK fans might actually 'score' before the age of 40!!!..Its hard to believe!!

Bad Idea Public School of any kind is still a dangerous place for trekkies
Public schools are a dangerous place for pretty much anybody these days. Being a trekkie doesn't make you stand out that much anymore!Bad Idea Public School of any kind is still a dangerous place for trekkies
Welcome! Great to see you here.Haha...this thread made me laugh because its a bunch of parents talking about getting their kids interested in Trek. Except in this case I'm the kid...also a teenage girl. It was an amazing movie!
Well..JJ has hooked my daughter. Something I have never been able to do in 15 years..how did he do it? Casting a HUNK to play Kirk..she now has a CAPTAIN KIRK poster on her wall....good going JJ!!! You know how to lure them in!!!
And now, for the first time ever, she actually watched KHAN (my new BLURAY version) and totally got the KOBYIASHI stuff...wow...incredible!!!

My 16 YO was intrigued when I told him, in preparation for the movie ,that one of the characters was a Vulcan and they didn't have feelings. He was intrigued and said that this couldn't be, and we talked. But after the movie, we realized that this aspect of Trek has been changed. He told me his friends mother said that "Spock was way to emotional and that he didn't have a love affair with Uhura in the original." I don't know my son's friend mother well, but I'm sure she would never post on the internet. But, though only one opinion, I wonder how much this accurately reflects the opinion of the silent baby boomer generation that grew up on TOS and were happy to see it back on the big screen only to be disappointed.

You shouldn't have told him inaccuracies to get him hooked. Vulcans were never presented as people without emotions in TOS, the movies, or the subsequent shows. And the half-Vulcan Spock certainly was never presented as a person without emotions. Nothing has been changed in that respect.
I don't care if it's supposed to make it "hip", all I care about is that it makes the story a lot more interesting. Even TOS writers must have realized that there's only so many times you can use alien spores, weird space substances and what not in order to have Spock lose it and get emotional for an episode and fall in love, before you hit the reset button. It's certainly refreshing that Orci, Kurtzman & J.J. have the balls to go through with a story about Spock being in an actual relationship and ruffle a few feathers, instead of playing it safe, like the earlier TOS movies and TNG.My 16 YO was intrigued when I told him, in preparation for the movie ,that one of the characters was a Vulcan and they didn't have feelings. Uhura/Spock was done for to make the movie "HIP", IMO. It doesn't matter if the old farts (like me) like it or not; it was logical to do it. And I know many here still hate the spock/uhura stuff; but not me. I LIKED IT..IT WAS EXCITING!
And I hope they push the envelope with these two characters in TREK 2. And something tells me; they will. Now..all they have to do is introduce a hot babe for Kirk, and then they can double-date and REALLY give some inspiration for those "porn" versions of TREK....

Let's see: how do we satisfy everyone? Let's have Spock frak Saavik, but it's acceptable because it's Pon Farr and he was a katra-less teenager (but don't ask what adult Spock does every 7 years to get 'relief'). Now let's drop some hints about Spock and Valeris, but don't go too far - let them have a candle-lit dinner in his quarters and some emotional scenes over her betrayal that show their closeness, so some people might go "hmm?" and the others could think nothing of it, nooo, come on, they're just mentor and protege. And if you write an episode of TNG with Spock as a guest star, throw in a line about Sarek's son's wedding, but when you're asked in interviews, don't confirm or deny that it is Spock. And while you're at it, add in a short, dialogue-free moment at the end of the episode in which a female Romulan resistance member is visibly upset when it seems that ambassador Spock is going to leave. You know that things like that will get noticed by people who like to imagine Spock getting nookie, but they're not obvious enough not to get ignored by those who want to think of him as asexual. Good way to have your cake and eat it!
