My daughter's Trek

My 19-year-old daughter loved the movie, as did my 16-year-old twins (one girl, one boy). My oldest son, who did watch TNG, loved the movie. I just can't seem to get my oldest daughter to go. I think if she saw it, she would be lured in by Spock (as I was many, many years ago).

My nine year old stepkid loved it and afterwards she even watched Shore Leave with me.:techman: Though she thinks Pine and Quinto are better then those old dudes:lol:

It doesn't hurt that Quinto was already a heart throb either. He had a built-in teen fan base. Another reason why the casting is golden.

Nebula1400, maybe you could get her started on Sylar in "Heroes" first. I saw a clip from 2008 Comic Com, and Zach's Sylar fans were screaming and yelling in the audience.

He looked actually embarrassed that everyone was obsessing on him, even though there were about 10 other cast members to take questions on the dais.

And his character is the villain, not a "hero." I found that amusing. People love danger. Spock certainly has danger in his character.

Well there was always a good possibility that the new Trek movie might spur interest into previously made shows of the same franchise.

This is actually a good thing ...
Given that numerous Trek episodes have a tendency to make you think (at least they did in my case), there is a possibility this might lead to an increase of people taking interest in more ... cerebral aspects.

I'm saying it's only a possibility.

That's more than a possibility - in my daughter's case, it is a fact!

My (oldest) daughter became interested in Trek (finally!) by watching the previews - and reading a bound copy of the Countdown comics...

But she watched her first TNG only a few days before we were to watch the movie - an *old* VHS I had of "The Naked Now" & "Code of Honor"...

(She actually liked "Code..." - and I kept telling her "It get's much better!" - but for some reason she claimed that gods-awful episode was "Really good!"...wierd.)

But then after seeing the movie (which had her *gushing* about how "Awesome!" it was) the next episode she wanted to see - and did - see was "Measure of a Man" (after I told her it was one of my favs - and she found the (new) DVD set with that episode.)

When she told me she "Really wanted to see..." "Measure", I explained that it "Wasn't like the movie, though..." and "...was a courtroom drama...lot of talking...but important ideas..."...

She turned and said to me "I don't like Star Trek just because it's got space-ships and explosions...I like the ideas too!"

(Though, she's a typical teenage girl as well - very much obsessed with boys!)

she may have liked Code because of the younger cast? :)

she sounds really cool!:techman:

PS. oh, sorry! I mixed up Code of Honor with First Duty.

hmm, in that case, I have no idea why she liked it so much! art is so subjective!

bribe her!!

This is the first Star Trek movie, series or anything else for that matter, that my two daughters enjoyed. My wife and I took them to see the movie last week and they loved it. They have even started watching my remastered TOS dvds with me. They still laugh at me because of the Trek Shrine that is my desk, but at least they now understand what it is all about.

You know what I like about this thread, besides the obvious? It completely shoots down the myth that Trekkies are all 40-year-old virgins who live in their parents' basements.

Trekkies have kids and families. Who knew? :)

She actually watched the first season of "Heroes" and loved it - mainly because of Sendhil Ramamurthy. I think I can get her to watch the subsequent seasons, because, even with the show's flaws, Zachary Quinto got better and better (and hotter) in the show.

And some of us are female, and had some hotness of our own at least at some point in our lives! ;-) I have three stunningly gorgeous daughter's too, at least two of whom will carry on the tradition of Trekitude.

That's what conventions are for: Meet your significant other and have your union blessed by Leonard Nimoy... Strangely enough, however, their kids are 7 years apart...

I agree.Tell her you'll take her out to dinner and the movie and pay for everything, let her pick where you go for dinner.

The siren call of Spock awaits!!

And you know, there has never been another Trek character that calls to women like Spock does. How fantastic that Quinto is all that and then some with NuSpock.. ::adore::

Unfortunately my sons were not hooked.

My 14 YO loves science and I did have a discussion with him about some scientific things like time travel and black holes. Other than that he said it was like so many other movies that he has seen - loud explosions, fights, monsters and space battles. He has seen enough of those type of films.

My 16 YO was intrigued when I told him, in preparation for the movie ,that one of the characters was a Vulcan and they didn't have feelings. He was intrigued and said that this couldn't be, and we talked. But after the movie, we realized that this aspect of Trek has been changed. He told me his friends mother said that "Spock was way to emotional and that he didn't have a love affair with Uhura in the original." I don't know my son's friend mother well, but I'm sure she would never post on the internet. But, though only one opinion, I wonder how much this accurately reflects the opinion of the silent baby boomer generation that grew up on TOS and were happy to see it back on the big screen only to be disappointed.

Unfortunately they MIGHT have gone too strongly for the female fan-fiction writer type viewers. Based on the movie, that is who will get hooked.

My 8 yo daughter loves TOS anyway, but when she heard that Chris Pine was cast as Kirk (who she loved in The Princess Diaries 2), it was game over.

I think she was almost excited as I was to see the movie. Like I read earlier on this thread, the movie actually has her wanting to see more Trek, like TNG!

Also, I've gotta find a Pine as Kirk poster for her room now, since that's something she's even talking about in school as something she wants!

I can't find a Pine/Kirk poster; I want one, too. They do have a nice black T-shirt with him in command gold.

What I like is that your daughter loves the new movie and is also willing to check out and appreciate the older stuff.

That's the best any of us long-time fans can ask for as far as the whole thing goes.

The TOS episode that got her hooked was "Balance of Terror". After she saw this movie, I was watching an episode of TNG, one that had Alexander in it, and she got interested because of that. But, that was all she needed, and found herself curious about it all regarding TNG.

Plus, she wants to watch the TOS movies (which she hasn't seen any of yet!)

This movie also got people in her school out of the woodwork (my daughter wore one of my old Trek shirts to school one day, and now she's one of the cooler kids in school - not just from classmates and students, but teachers!), and her seeing that even her own teacher is a fan, it got her right into wanting more Trek!

Last week, during their reading time, my daughter took in my CD of the new movie soundtrack.

Her teacher proudly played it then, instead of the regular music she plays.

Wow, I would love to hear someone play the music when I'm out somewhere. Or even on TV.

are you serious?! she's now the cool kid 'cos of Trek? unbelievable! :techman:

^ Yep, believe it or not! The Monday after she saw the movie, I dropped her off at school, and she was quickly surrounded by kids asking her how the movie was.

I'm amazed by it, since the time I was in high school, I was the weird kid for liking Star Trek (got my payback, since most of the folks I graduated with have commented to me on how much they love the movie!)

I got my payback when most of the ones mocking me in high school for liking Trek actually didn't graduate at all... :D
