My daughter's Trek

Well..JJ has hooked my daughter. Something I have never been able to do in 15 years..how did he do it? Casting a HUNK to play Kirk..she now has a CAPTAIN KIRK poster on her wall....good going JJ!!! You know how to lure them in!!!

And now, for the first time ever, she actually watched KHAN (my new BLURAY version) and totally got the KOBYIASHI stuff...wow...incredible!!!

That's cool!

I was going to post about something similar - that before the movie I could never get my kids to watch any Trek - with the exception of my 8yo daughter who likes the two tribble episodes (TOS & DS9)...

But since the movie, my 14yo daughter has now taken a huge interest in...TNG...

I know it's weird - but JJ's film created a Next Generation fan!

She love the movie - and it got her curious about other Trek, and TNG was the first think she checked out - and she *loved* it and now she's hooked! Loves it!

She even spent part of her (14th) birthday money on a TNG DVD set!

Okay...it wasn't an adolescent hormonal attraction to Pine in her case...although she does think nuSpock is "hot"...lol!

(She's also become interested in the TOS-cast movies...but waiting until she can watch them with me later this month...)

Tomorrow I am having my daughter watch THE OFFSPRING. I know from the affect it had on her mother that OFFSPRING will just lure ALL normal women in and they will cry...AND LOVE STAR TREK there after.

My 14 year old daughter who was embarrassed by Star Trek (despite, or because of, the rest of the family watching it incessantly) went along to see the movie mainly to humor me I think.

She loved it.

The next morning she told me that she woke up thinking she wants to watch more Trek with us and she wants to see the movie again!! Since then she has dragged herself away from myspace to come watch DS9 eps with us and a few TOS ones as well!! She asks tons of questions. We watched STVI The Undiscovered Country the other night and her questions about Klingon/Federation politics were very intelligent.

A few years ago she watched all of VOY and even read a VOY book but then teenage embarrasment took over. I believe we have now re-assimilated her.

Your story, and mine, and others I am sure, are perfect examples why I could care-a-less as to why some of these people (on this board) don't like this movie. All their continuity stuff and all their meaningless quibbles are so SMALL compared to what the affect this movie is having on NEW fans..and in this case..NEW girl fans.

Oh well...some just don't have a clue as to what is important for TREK to survive. I do...and she's fifteen years old.

But, but... what about the canon violations?! The huge nacelles?! She doesn't understand the canon!!

I browsed the IMDb message boards for some of the cast, and they are full of posts that sound like they were made by teenagers. Girls who previously were hung up on Twilight have new hotties to gush about.

And in the grand scheme? THAT is a good thing. Far more important than canon and nacells and whether or not 'ships can do that in space'....

Some of our younger male TREK fans might actually 'score' before the age of 40!!!..Its hard to believe!!

Yeah, they should be thankful...because of all these girls like our daughters -whom JJ has converted into female Trekkies - *male* Trekkies may someday be able to actually reproduce!!!

LOL! :rommie:

yep, the more girls and kiddies in Trek, the better.

PS. just wait until the haters start complaining (prematurely, of course ;)) about Barbie-Trek.

Well there was always a good possibility that the new Trek movie might spur interest into previously made shows of the same franchise.

This is actually a good thing ...
Given that numerous Trek episodes have a tendency to make you think (at least they did in my case), there is a possibility this might lead to an increase of people taking interest in more ... cerebral aspects.

I'm saying it's only a possibility.

That's more than a possibility - in my daughter's case, it is a fact!

My (oldest) daughter became interested in Trek (finally!) by watching the previews - and reading a bound copy of the Countdown comics...

But she watched her first TNG only a few days before we were to watch the movie - an *old* VHS I had of "The Naked Now" & "Code of Honor"...

(She actually liked "Code..." - and I kept telling her "It get's much better!" - but for some reason she claimed that gods-awful episode was "Really good!"...wierd.)

But then after seeing the movie (which had her *gushing* about how "Awesome!" it was) the next episode she wanted to see - and did - see was "Measure of a Man" (after I told her it was one of my favs - and she found the (new) DVD set with that episode.)

When she told me she "Really wanted to see..." "Measure", I explained that it "Wasn't like the movie, though..." and "...was a courtroom drama...lot of talking...but important ideas..."...

She turned and said to me "I don't like Star Trek just because it's got space-ships and explosions...I like the ideas too!"

(Though, she's a typical teenage girl as well - very much obsessed with boys!)

My nine year old stepkid loved it and afterwards she even watched Shore Leave with me.:techman: Though she thinks Pine and Quinto are better then those old dudes:lol:

Well that's a relief! I have a 13 y.o. son who loves TOS and the new movie. It's nice to know that Star Trek won't ruin my chances for being a grandmother one day! ;)

not only is it bringing in a young generation it is reconnecting trek back with the people who grew up on star trek but havent seen an episode or cared about it for a long time.

I'm surprised none of hte haters have come in and said Star Trek is the new "Twilight."

Yes, I have observed the same thing. New fans and older people who lost interest the the show like the movie.
