Music genres you don't 'get'

And in the past few years the sound is starting to make a comeback. Not in popular music of course, as real rock hasn't been mainstream for a long time, but plenty of new bands are still interested in that sound. Thank God for Sweden!
Sorry...I just don't have a lot of confidence in Scandinavian bands...ever since I saw Nightwish and thought :wtf: . Talk about overbloated....I don't know WHAT. :wtf: I mean, this is a band that covers Andrew Lloyd Frakkin' WEBBER, fer cryin' out loud!

Seriously...I really think the cultural differences are too great to generate massive appeal for these bands in the US.

If you saw them with Tarja Turunen as the lead singer, that's your problem right there. I was NOT a fan of hers at all.

Their new lead singer is in my personal opinion a whole hell of a lot more listenable. A good singer, but not bombastic.

Why the hate for metal? Power metal is actually quite melodic (that's what makes it power metal instead of normal metal...). Metal isn't that bad; you just have to find your kind. There's all different sorts.

What I definitely don't get is some of the more popular kinds of rap. There's some good meaningful rap, but certain kinds (cough ALMOST ALL end cough) is just your stereotypical "bitch bitch bitch ho bust a cap bitch bitch ho drugs weed bitch damn ho".

Another genre I don't understand is pop. It's pretty much all derivative off of eachother; some variation of either whining about how a girl left the singer or how the singer has so many girls all over him that he doesn't know what to do with them all.

Whats hard to get about about that? Heartbreak sucks. And having lots of girls doesnt.

^^

Yeah. But nigh every song that can be called pop EVER (with notable exceptions, like Michael Jackson) has been about that.

Well, first of all, as a fan of Van Halen myself, if you think they are doing 'just fine' you are on frakkin' crack. And if you don't know the reasons why I'd say that, a simple trip to Wikipedia will apprise you of the situation. Lord knows I once thought Eddie Van Halen to be one of the top guitarists in history...but now? The guy is completely washed up. And David Lee Roth? He's a joke - an old man trying to relive his glory days. The word I would use these days to characterize DLR? "Pathetic" fits quite well. But definitely not 'just fine'.

So reuniting with Sammy Hagar for a highly successful tour, then reuniting with DLR for their highest grossing tour ever, and releasing a Best Of that quickly goes platinum, and currently finishing up recording their new album doesn't count as doing fine?
The rest of your post is equally biased by your own perception rather than facts, so I'm done here. Enjoy your grunge, and I'll go and crank Whitesnake's latest.

Some themes are universal. Michael has had a few songs about love. (and lost loves) as a solo artist and with the Jacksons (Five). While there are reoccurring themes in pop music its not hard to understand the appeal. And pop music can cover alot of genres not just silly love songs. ( and what's wrong with that? I'd like to know. ;) )

Hip Hop. I'll never understand it because I hate it. Even if I did understand it, I don't think I would like it anyway.
