The lack of M'ress and Caitians in general from canon/on-screen Trek is a constant crime for which I will not forgive the franchise, I want my cat women damnit!
There were a couple of male Caitians (a ginger one and a black one) in the background of STIV. They're canon!

We have the technology now. There's really no excuse for them not to. I promise to actually like XII if they include a photoreal sexy CGI cat woman.
Since Smith's fiction was out of print last time I checked, you'll probably have to do that. That's where I picked up his complete collection of SF about 6 years ago. He was a very unique writer; well worth reading.

Yep. I have read conflicting interviews with the makeup team for that movie. One, about the time of the movie, said that yes TAS was an inspiration for those aliens. A few years later, a different interviewee thought it was just coincidence. But FASA RPG's "ST IV Sourcebook" had already assumed the two felinoids were Caitians and featured their pics in that manual.

The publicity pics have inspired the inclusion of Caitians in numerous licensed projects since, such as Marvel/Paramount's "Starfleet Academy: Telepathy War":

I know some people have a “furry” fetish, but that would be taking things too far, IMO. I mean, I get uptight about women who don’t shave their legs.
Sulu's a furry. In one of DC comics' old post-STIV adventures he totally gets it on with M'Ress.
"Who Killed Captain Kirk" anthology, I used to have the trade paper back of all of them, they had a relationship for some time in the comics after that, it was quite sweet actually.

During the controversial contractual renewal hiatus, M'ress was redrawn as the rather, umm, "horny" M'yra - and she tried to win over Sulu, but she had competition from an Asian crewwoman, Kathy Li.
Others have seen this piece already, but since you opened this subject, here's an animation styled portrait I made way back in 1997, maybe 98 for a late friend's tribute site.
He specifically wanted M'Ress depicted in a "Wrath of Khan" uniform. (Considering she's covered in fur, she's probably about to suffer a "meltdown" in that attire. The "Heavy Metal" styled background came from a Corel clip-art CD.

I have that comic, flipped through it yesterday, Sulu being very shy and reluctant around M'ress until a life threatening situation nearly kills her, to which he saves her, finally opens up and they have a passionate kiss. They're together the rest of the comic. So he was slow at returning her affection at first, he soon caught up
