Moving On Without Chekov

It's been four years since Anton Yelchin's death and it'll be even longer until a new movie is filmed let alone released (if one ever is), they waited that long to recast Spock with whatever his name is from STD after Leonard Nimoy passed away. There's no set time limit on how long to wait before recasting.

I could see them not recasting the role out of respect, since it was an accidental death and the actor was young, but likewise I can understand them needing to recast it if the story called for it, or just including a throwaway line about Chekov being on the Reliant and having Ilia or Kevin Riley or Saavik or David Bailey or Arex or whoever filling the empty seat.

Not to slight Anton or Walter, but really, how vital was Chekov in any version of Star Trek? The original character came and went throughout the last two seasons and Anton’s version was played for laughs in films that had more than enough comedy relief. The audience knows he passed away and a tribute was added to the credits. There’s little story reason to mention him at all other than courtesy. The show goes on, if it goes on at all...

Here's my honest take-kill off Chekov or mention him in passing. Personally, the more interesting aspect would be to actually kill him in the story. Unnecessary? Maybe. But, it's an opportunity for Kirk to demonstrate that maturity in the face of death that has been a persistent theme for this iteration of the character. Let him show that growth in a meaningful way, while acknowledging the real life aspects.

I had a similar idea. Tie it into the closer relationship Kirk and Chekov were developing in Beyond. Use Chekov's death to propel Kirk as he meets his father in the next film.

They could just mention offhand Chekov's absence by Kirk telling the new navigator they seem to be settling into their new position and that Chekov would be proud.

Welcome to TrekBBS, Jayden.

Just a tip, though: if you wish to respond to a post in a thread which has been inactive for more than a year, a more substantial new contribution to the existing discussion than this is recommended.

If you merely wish to agree with the statement expressed without adding any new insight or commentary, clicking the 'Like' button is probably the best way to go. :techman:
