Moving On Without Chekov

If any more Paramount Trek films ever get made, I doubt they will take place in the same universe as the Kelvinverse.

Well, that's depressing...as well as the optimistic spirit I have come to expect.

It has nothing to do with optimism. It has to do with Hollywood's penchant to continually reboot their movie franchises after certain periods of time.

Bones: I miss Chekov.
Kirk: The kid deserved promotion, and he wasn't going to move up on this ship unless there was a vacancy. And I'm not planning on moving away any time soon. Mr Spock?
Spock: I believe I am well suited to my current role, Captain.
McCoy: Yeah Jim, but I miss Chekov.
Kirk: We all do, Bones. Mr Sulu...
And on with the plot...

The simplest solution is for Chekov to be transferred to the USS Reliant.

As for his replacement, it would be a nice touch to see Arex and M’Ress acknowledged in the Kelvin movies. Same with Illa.

As for Jaylah, its been four years, so she should be out of Starfleet Academy by now. However, does she have to be the navigator? There must be other areas of the ship she could perform duties, like rec room operator or assistant engineer.

However, I like the idea of keeping Darwin at the helm.

I would put Jaylah as Chief of Security and have another navigator.

I would transfer Chekov but not to the Reliant.

Checov should be replaced as a character with an "In Memorium" to Anton Yelchin at the start of the movie or back.

I'd recommend Jaylah, Galia, Gary Mitchell (humorous psychic powers use), or Janice Rand as possible replacements.

Another obvious one? (Vulcan) Teenage Saavik played by Maise Williams.

Hopefully not Mitchell: I'd hate for them to overwrite the comics.
Star Trek Into Darkness did that long ago when they said Kirk didn't lose a single crewmember since taking command, invalidating IDW's adaptation of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" and other comics in the ST'09-STID timespan.

I would just use Marcus or Jayla. Especially Marcus to build up her relationship with Kirk.

Marcus is a great character but she's not going to be at the helm.

Well Kirk does alter his logs...
