Moving on Saturday; getting sad

Well, Monday was my last day of work at TGI Fridays. I spent all of Tuesday recovering from the massive drunkfest that occurred after my shift.

Now it's time to kick it into high gear and start packing. I'm excited to move, but I am starting to get really sad about it. I just want to give all my friends big hugs!

I moved into my house 11 years ago. I was lucky, I had a whole month to do it (until my apartment lease ran out). No way I could have done that if I had to do it in a day or two. I hope you have that much time.

Well, I had more time to do it. But I just wouldn't be me if I didn't put it all off until the last minute.

When you wait until the last minute, then you don't care about carefully sorting items into boxes anymore. You just throw things into a box until it's full and close it up, probably never to see those items again because you'll never open the box again. :)

Yeah, I am actually planning on throwing a lot of stuff away. There is crap in here that I haven't used in years.

I hate moving. I've been in this house for 17 years now but when i was a kid, we moved every 2-3 years. I didn't like it. I know that eventually, i have to move out of this house, but i don't wanna.

Anyway, gotta do it right? Good luck man. You can give your friends e-hugs!

I'm hoping I'll be able to see them before Saturday to give them real hugs, even if that's all I have time to do.

Moving blows. I've moved once a year for the last 6 years, ever since I started college. I know I don't want to live in an apartment forever, and if this job ends up being awesome I will hopefully be able to look into buying a house at some point in the next 2 years or so. After that, I don't want to move for a good long while.

I know the feeling. My friend was like that; moving about once a year, give or take. He moved into his condo several months ago and is gonna stay there for a good long time.

I'm moving in a week (or at least starting to). It's going to be a long trip, from the west coast to the east coast.

Good luck on your move (and new job).

I almost miss living in the dorms. Moving was a pain, but at least I could fit everything in my car! This U-Haul nonsense is for the birds.

Good luck to you as well. I can't even fathom moving across the country. I'm more or less moving back to where I grew up (give or take 10 miles or so).

I'm pretty much expecting my new job to suck balls. That way I hope I'll be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't.

In the last couple of months, my parents sold their house and moved into a retirement community. They had owned the house since 1970, and I lived there from 1970 through 1982 (age 9-21). It's a nice, big house (former shoe factory built during the Civil War) and sits on a half acre of land backing up on acres of conservation land. Not only was it terribly depressing having to give up the family house, but it was a nightmare packing up and moving everything; a lot of stuff accumulates in 39 years. :rommie:

Ugh, I just remembered I have to cancel all my services. That's never fun.

I've known I was moving for a month. Why haven't I done anything yet?

My parents sold their house in May and actually moved out about three weeks ago and I'm still changing addresses of my magazine subscriptions that went there. :rommie:

One thing I am happy about is that once I move, I won't actually be starting my new job for about 9-10 days. I'll have plenty of time to get settled in and get all of my stuff sorted out.

For some reason this makes me very sad. :(
I mean, good for your parents to be open enough to move to a retirement community and not forcefully stay in their house until they fall down the stairs, but ... I don't know. Giving something that beautiful up really hits home, somehow.

RoJoHen, good luck with your move!

I remember my dad helping me move, he'd be driving his pickup and I'd be in the truckbed trying to hold down the heavy furniture as he drove.

Remember the "Neutron Dance" chase scene in Beverly Hills Cop with Eddie holding on to the back of the truck? This was like that. :wtf:

My grandparents finally gave up their house in 2006. They had moved in when my mother was 7, so since 1953. Talk about a packing nightmare. Fortunately it was a small house, so it only took them about 3 months to sort through the stuff.

Anyway, moving sucks. I have a lot of stuff, and a lot of books, and everyone I know has vowed never to help me move again. That's about 90% of why I've live in the same apartment 9 years later. Next time, I'm biting the bullet and hiring movers. :vulcan:

I think I'm just about the only person who enjoys moving. I love organizing things into boxes and labelling them and then figuring out where everything goes at the new place. It's very exciting! I like to move around the furniture in my room every few months just to make things look different, and when you move you get to do that with a whole house/apartment! Sure, there's the annoying details to be worked out, but that is overshadowed by the fun of packing boxes.

Good luck with your move. That's great that you will have so many days free before you start your new job. Should be plenty of time to get settled or at least put the boxes in the right room! I hope your new job is awesome.

Wow, I didn't know Monica Geller posted here.

Yeah, pretty much par for the course for a move. Whenever I switch jobs, the last day is almost always sad. I changed jobs a couple of months ago and I was really, really sad about not seeing some of my co-workers again (despite being happy about the overall change of job). Fortunately, they don't live far away really, so I can meet up with them from time to time. Did so just a couple of weeks ago in fact, which was a blast.

Your move is way bigger, of course. So I'm not surprised you're feeling ambivalent. It's normal. Enjoy the maudlin bittersweetness of it all. ;)

Good luck with the new job!

 My job consists of organizing documents into folders and then boxes and then printing labels and creating indexes for it all - and I love it!

I have been compared to Monica on far more than one occasion!
