Movies that would fit into TOS

This has doubtless been done before, but I was recently watching The Final Countdown and realized how easily it could be a TOS story.

Of course, this is true of many naval stories, but this one had the scifi element as well.

Master & Commander is often named as a TOS-style story.

I understand that "The Galileo Seven" was a sci fi version of "Five Came Back".

I think "Run Slient, Run Deep" is an obvious possibility for a story involving the Romulans.

This one may sound strange, but I think it would be fascinating for an odd kind of remake of "K-19: The Widowmaker". I'm not suggesting making the crew of the Enterprise out to be communists, but rather to show Kirk and Co. being sent out on a high-stakes expedition that takes their ship and crew to the limit.

Hunt for Red October an interesting choice. Who would be in the enemy sub? Klingons? Tryin to picture how that could-would be done.

Well, TOS:Balance of Terror borrowed a lot from the film The Enemy Below, which like Run Silent, Run Deep was also a submarine film.

I would like to have seen Star Trek do a film that was more of a character study or one that was heavy on intrigue rather than one that is action-heavy. I think the James Garner film 36 Hours would have made a great TOS episode, but TNG already used that one (TNG: Future Imperfect)

I would love to have seen Star Trek do Apocalypse Now (or their version of the original book/novella on which that film was based -- Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad).

Star Trek did do something like Apocalypse Now/Heart of Darkness a couple of times: The Omega Glory (the Ron Tracey Charcter was something like Col. Kurtz) and Patterns of Force (with John Gill being similar to Kurtz), but neither of these characters became the demi-god that Kurtz believed he was in film Apocalypse Now or the story Heart of Darkness.


Another great character-study film for TOS to do would have been The Bridge on the River Kwai. Kirk and Spock would go on a secret mission behind enemy lines to stop a Col. Nicholson-type character -- a legendary Starfleet Captain who has been a prisoner of the Romulans -- from building something (a weapon?) for the Romulans. Of course at the end, the Col. Nicholson-type character comes to his senses and realizes his folly in helping the Romulans, then sacrifices himself to help Kirk and Spock destroy the weapon he has helped create -- Just like Alec Guinness did in the role of Col. Nicholson in the film.

Kirk became a demigod (After a fashion) in "The Paradise Syndrome." Not the same type of story I guess.

I hope nobody's going to think I'm crazy for suggesting this, but I really think CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND could provide some inspirational material for a multi-part TOS ep, if not a story arc.

Please don't laugh.

I see it as a natural, in the vein of "to seek out new life and new civilizations".

I think if you project the notion of TOS forward into the 1970's, a kind of Cold War allegory such as TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING also would be a natural.

I also think FORBIDDEN PLANET would make an interesting TOS story arc.

Another one, and I hope this isn't too crazy, would be PLANET OF THE APES. I can think of a way this could be done, and not alter the familiar STAR TREK universe. Actually, the idea of sending a small expedition off to some distant world where they crash land and learn some dark secret of cosmic sigificance could probably be approached several ways, and none of them have to be related. I think the original film's scary tone would lend itself well to a TOS multi-parter.

And yet another that wil probably provoke laughter would be to make a story arc out of the SHOGUN mini-series from 1980.

Another, obvious rescue movie that would lend itself to TOS: GREY LADY DOWN.

I hope nobody beats me up for this, but I would love to see dinosaur/caveman movies in TOS, such as THE LOST WORLD or even something like JURASSIC PARK.

You could do "Behind Enemy Lines" as a TOS Story. It would certainly be better than the original!

TNG's attempt to do Heart of Darkness resulted in INS; although, according to Pillar, it was a lot darker of a script when it was called Star Trek: Stardust.
