Blinded by the Light - theater

Used to watch the Amazing Johnathan back in the day, saw that Hulu had a documentary about him. Starts off alright, but when the director finds out there's a second documentary crew filming, the thing becomes about him trying to make the documentary, and less about the comic magician. A third documentarian who also juggles chainsaws is introduced, and a fourth is mentioned, and some of her footage is used for this documentary.

The whole thing turned out to be a waste, to me, since it became less and less about the title subject.

Went out to Lufkin tonight for an AMC Artisan Films double feature.

Today was the last day to see WYGB, and it was alright, not great.

For BbtL, I had a bad experience with a couple that arrived late and would not shut up throughout the film. I won't be going back to the theater for it, but I may watch it again when it streams for whatever bits I may have missed here & there thanks to the folks who would not shut the hell up.

Back at my rental now, watching NBC's ER via Hulu.

Backdraft 2. This should be the very definition of unnecessary sequel. The original movie stood on its own well enough, and I don't think anyone remembers the original well enough to crave a sequel. But some of the cast, such as William Baldwin and Donald Sutherland return. The main character this time around is the son of the fireman killed in the first one, with Baldwin playing his Uncle, now a Fire Captain. One of the main problems with this movie is that while the first one had everything happen in the front-lines, this go-around, the movie focuses more on the aftermath, with the main character being a fire investigator, investigating possible causes. Theoretically, with a good script, it could be smart and entertaining, but instead the whole premise is dragged down with a terrible script, and the entire thing ends up lacking drama. It was quite boring, I felt.

What a jumbled mess. There are too many little bits and storylines that could've been trimmed out or more tightly wound to make the storyline more cohesive. We were also dropped into this storyline without out much of a background, either in an info dump or exposition.

Damon's Max lacks any kind of the empathy he could've brought to the character as one of the better actors of our generation.

It was a good idea, but poorly executed and I read the director admitted as much.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle - A-

The original Kingsman was great and this one was as well, even if it was a step down from the original. Julianne Moore was great as the over the top villain and Elton John was freaking amazing as himself. The one piece of great writing was making Tilde a strong character about being nothing but an anal sex joke in the original.

What makes this one a step below the original is the writing. There was a lot of extraneous bits that could've been cut off like the Bruce Greenwood president storyline and perhaps making Whiskey's storyline part of a reason he flips to working for Julianne Moore. Don't get me wrong: I liked looking at Poppy Delevingne at the rock concert, but did her storyline with the ex-Kingsman reject really add anything?

Saw Lucy in the Sky last night. First and foremost, this is not a movie set in Space. It's not even really sci-fi. It's more of a drama about Space, about its effects on astronauts. Portman's character Lucy has had a profound experience after having been on the ISS, and after having come back, feels like she has more in common with other astronauts in her group than her own family and starts an affair with one of them. She wants to go back to space and wants to go back very badly, to the point of obsession. When training with a group for an upcoming mission, she ends up getting cut from the upcoming mission and her obsession derails her into madness. Things get weird towards the end. It ends up being a very dark movie.

Just a few thoughts on some of the stuff I've been watching.

Ready or Not was pretty damn fun for a dark comedy.

I enjoyed the extended cut of Spider-Man: Far From Home except for that last added scene with Mysterio in London before the attack. I think that one was too far into mustache twirling villiany.

Seeing the unedited version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture was actually kinda disappointing. I have seen too many extended versions, I kept looking for the stuff that was missing.

Brittany Runs a Marathon is on my top ten list for the year.

Joker was a long way to go to show Batman's origin.

I enjoyed Terminator: Dark Fate, went in mostly spoiler free, which I think is the best way. Too bad it already leaving theaters out here.

Filing The Lighthouse under "The Fuck Did I Just Watch?!?"

Did not care for the plot twist for Last Christmas, kinda figure it would be something like that. I was close, but not quite.

Doctor Sleep is different from the book, which is to be expected. It was a nice sequel for The Shining.

Jojo Rabbit is in my top ten for the year, too. I hope it wins all the awards when they start getting handed out.

Playing with Fire - is it required that every wrestler turned actor has to do at least one stupid ass kids' movie?

I've got tickets reserved to see Ford v Ferrari IMAX and Charlie's Angels BigD on Monday.

Did not care for the plot twist for Last Christmas, kinda figure it would be something like that. I was close, but not quite.

I liked the plot twist, but I was also genuinely surprised by it.

I had some suspicions that he was some sort of ghost from the trailer, but the movie really had me thinking he was real for a good chunk of time. When the reveal came, it hit me like a punch to the gut.

FvF was really good. Interesting story, cool car driving effects, and nice cast, especially Matt Damon & Christian Bale. Jon Bernthal, Ray McKinnon and Josh Lucas were good in their supporting roles, too. I may go see it again, after I read up on what it was I was watching, since I know nothing about car racing. It looked good in IMAX, the next viewing will be just a regular theater.

CA was so freaking dull, I kept checking the time on my cellphone, which I would normally have turned off during the trailers. It does reference the tv show & previous movies, while also kinda spitting in the face of 'em with photoshopped Patrick Stewart's Bosley. And if ya do go to see it, the story continues during the credits, and there's a mid credit bonus scene, as well. Nothing at the very end, though.

Used the coupon code for a free Redbox rental, watching the animated Batman movie now. This is cray fun viewing, especially Mikey & the initial meeting between Batman & the TMNT in Gotham City.

I've got my third AMC Stubs reservation set for a showing of The Good Liar tomorrow night.

Used only two of my AMC Stubs tickets this week, work stuff kept getting in the way.

21B was pretty good, right up until the subway scene. So bad, it even made Chadwick Boseman yell, "What the fuck?!?" Pretty sure that wasn't scripted, but a genuine reaction to the movie going off the rails.

KO was really good. Great cast. And it had a lot more humor than I expected.

I've got my tickets reserved to see Frozen II IMAX, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and Queen & Slim tomorrow.

Mike Birbiglia has a new standup storytelling special on Netflix. For fans of his style, its pretty good. And I am a fan. I've watched his previous specials & read his book, so I enjoyed this quite a bit the other night.

Went out to Tyler for some Black Friday shopping at Half Price Books and then a trip to the AMC.

FII was better, I think, than the first movie. And it looked good on the IMAX screen. I was the only one in the theater by the time the bonus scene at the end of the credits came up, and I commented to the guy cleaning the theater about it. He said that kids were trying to stay for it at other screenings, but the parents are rushing 'em out. Folks, if ya let your kid dress up as Elsa, and ya let the kids bring their Frozen dolls to the movie, ya should let your kids stay to the very end of the damn movie.

WTF?!?

I was going to watch two other movies while I was there, but the AC was cranked in the IMAX theater, and the cold I have been fighting all week came back and bit me in the face - runny nose, sore throat & headache - so I cancelled my other reserved tickets and came back to the rental to hang out with my dogs.

So, that concluded my last trip to the theater for this month.

And I watched The Irishman on Netflix. It was pretty good, not my favorite, from Martin Scorsese. GoodFellas is still at the top of my list, followed by The Departed.

Because I enjoyed Ford v Ferrari so much when I saw it a couple of weeks ago, I watched two documentaries yesterday.

The 24 Hour War was about the history of racing, the lead up to the Ford / Ferrari rivalry, and how it came to a head during the 1960s at Le Mans.

Shelby American focused more on Carrol Shelby, aka the guy Matt Damon played in the movie, his life story and his involvement in racing, working with Aston Martin & Ford, up to his death a few years ago.

Both documentaries were co-directed by Adam Corolla, and use some of the same interview clips and footage, which I was fine with while watching 'em.

And that concludes the "new to me" movies up to November.

Fathom Events is showing When Harry Met Sally today & Tuesday. I'll be going to see that, but I've seen it on a theater screen before, so it won't count for a new viewing. May try to get to the movies tomorrow before work, too.

Had to get some stuff done in Tyler yesterday, wound up at the movies when I got done.

Wound up going for a Damn White People double feature.

Harriet was a pretty good biopic, focussed on a few years of Tubman's life, from shortly before her escape from Maryland to Philadelphia, and her multiple returns to help get slaves to freedom.

Q&S was very topical, as ya can see from the trailer. Couple of issues. First, why is she the one always getting hurt? Second, the damn trailer gives the last, most meaningful lines of dialogue from the film. Trailers need to stop doing that - don't give away any damn thing from the final ten, fifteen minutes of the freaking movies!

Also, shout out to Benito Martinez from FX's The Shield who has a role as an off duty sheriff, the first guy that the couple meets after their disaster of a first date.

Anyway...

Went to the Cinemark Lufkin to see When Harry Met Sally as a Fathom Events and it was one of the worst movie experiences I've had in quite awhile. Second time I've seen it on a theater screen, and so I won't be adding it to the list. And it is one of my all time favorites, so I've seen it on VHS, DVD, blu ray, streaming, cable, whatever. And I have a signed copy from Rob Reiner, too.
