I hadn't seen this year's version of the annual thread created and I just watched my first movie of the year, so here we are!

1) Flint - B+

While being limited due to being a Lifetime movie, Flint still manages to show how desperate things got. Betsy Brandt and Marin Ireland steal the show and the politicians that failed the town are portrayed with the correct level of oiliness to not become over the top, just grossly incompetent. A bigger budget would've done this topic better though.

I broke down and finally watched Bright last night after having nothing better to do. I didn't think it was quite as dire as the critics make out, and I thought the universe was interesting. However it's still only a 5/10.

Watching Bride of Frankenstein.

This is easily the weirdest movie I've ever seen from before 1960. Beating the previous record held by Freaks.

The movie opens with Mary Shelley, the author of the original Frankenstein, talking about the original Frankenstein movie. She says "That's not how it went, this is how it really went!" Then they go off on something even hilariously farther from the source material than the original movie. Basically "Hey let's get Frankenstein laid".

The movie is so stupidly absurd I can't help but like it.

Flint - B+
Left Behind - F

Starring Nicholas Cage, I should've seen this coming. I knew it was going to be weird and have religious overtones, but it felt like an evangelical church wrote and produced this movie. Those left behind suddenly result to looting, stealing and being generally horrible people, except for Chad Michael Murray, Cage's daughter and a Muslim man, who does nothing but be friendly and helpful for the entire movie, so did God not take him because he is a Muslim? That's what the movie leaves you thinking.

That is the movie's biggest flaw: God's reasoning of who is raptured and who isn't. I was okay with the children being taken into heaven, but are you telling me that not one of those nurses was a horrible person? And when the characters do good things, they are still stuck in purgatory, if apparently it was too little too late.

There is also some editing problems where we go from the roads being so clogged because of now driver-less cars, but later on we see transport trucks and other vehicles driving down the road with no problems.

Once the characters are off the plane and they see the hell on earth that is starting, the movie ends. What do they do now? Wait for judgment day? Go looting as well? I understand the movie is called "Left Behind," but I'd rather see what happened next instead of 85% of what we saw on the plane and the endless scenes of Cage's daughter looking for her family.

A-
Very dramatic and intense, with some stunning performances, especially that by Gary Oldman. Great makeup on him too, although it was obvious at times that the actor's much thinner, particularly when Churchill hurried up the stairs.

Bruce Willis and Vincent D'Onofrio as brothers was the best thing about this movie. Not a bad way to pass the time during my long lunch break.

Les Miserables - B+

I thought very highly of Hugh Jackman. In a movie with only singing, his emotions were written all over his face and gives you an idea of what is going on beyond the singing. I also enjoyed a lot of the solo songs, even when some of the actors had difficulty with the notes. They were shot well enough to get that emotion through.

The group songs are where the movie runs into trouble. The camera work and sound editing makes it difficult to focus on who is saying what.

There is also bad CGI, especially of the boat in the opening scene.
