Movies Seen in 2018

Flint - B+
Left Behind - F
Les Miserables - B+
Gifted - B+

The strength of the movie is its actors. Chris Evans shows here that he could the next Matt Damon or Tom Hanks, playing any kind of role and doing it well. McKenna Grace is one of the best child actors I have ever seen and just shows that she is being wasted on Fuller House.

The plot however is where the movie loses some points. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but it just seemed too simple, too one dimensional. All the problems seem to be answered easily and without drama.

This is the Denzel/Travolta version and the interactions between them are the best part of the movie. All the best scenes are them having conversations. I understand this was based on a move that was based on a book, but since they had apparently deviated from both, they could've cut out all of the secondary characters, the police and subway management, Luis Guzman's speaking parts and just focus on the head to head between the two characters and it would have been better off.

A strong movie that again shows the negative side of war and returning to a lack of support. Kate Mara always puts in a good performance and she steals the show here, hitting the entire range of emotions.

It feels like this movie could have done more with a larger budget and some trimming or expanding around the mother storyline. Yes, she's horrible and doesn't understand, but she's barely on screen. Either cut the scene and talk about her ruining Megan's life or expand her screentime to drive that fact home.

Meh. These ensemble cast movies usually don't do anything for me because you can never give all the characters a satisfying story line and/or an end to it.

Here, we get some laughs out of Frances McDormand and Simon McBurney, but that was really it.

Being about the Boston Marathon bombing attack, it was obvious that this movie would swell with American pride.

This was an enjoyable distraction for two hours. You don't have to think too hard, except to keep track of the plethora of characters, but one thing I give this movie props for is introducing everyone at the start, even if their story line was mundane until they got involved in the primary story.

This is one of Disney's forgotten gems, one of the first to show its heroine as a warrior and not a princess.

The only downside is Eddie Murphy being 1998 Eddie Murphy. I know it is more than likely the character that was written, but he took me right out of the movie several times.

Every star has been in an inspirational sports movie. Denzel Washington, Cuba Gooding Jr., Sandra Bullock. But if you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Richard Jenkins gets in some good one liners, but that's really it. You don't feel emotionally connected to any of the characters because none of them get past the surface. It doesn't even have a scene to get you emotionally invested or worried about whether the character will win the pivotal race.

Avoid this one.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Another movie saddled with a director change and it hurts the movie. This could have been something special, I'm not sure what led to having another director do reshoots but they are very noticeable in the movie. You have some very strong performances, especially from Kiera Knightley as Sugar Plum and the actress who played Clara. The realization of the Tin Soldiers is something to behold, but the movie is stuck in-between trying to tell the story of the Nutcracker and adding its own elements and somewhere they both get lost. The sound track by James Newton Howard maybe the best thing about it, it weaves the classing Tschaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite updating the original and adding new tracks as well. Also Misty Copeland is in it briefly, dancing the Nutcracker and is simply amazing.

So, the release of the new Halloween reminded me that I hadn't seen any of the previous films all the way through, in an unedited for content way. Any bits of the franchise I've seen over the years has been via basic cable. I signed up for a free thirty day trial with Amazon Prime to watch the original films. I kinda hate how it goes back and forth between continuity, picking & choosing what it will use or what it will ignore, and that continued when I went to see the new one.

Logan Lucky wasn't as good as I had hoped, considering the cast & director.

Ron White's new standup special was okay.

I had to go to D/FW last week, and I went a day early, and spent the afternoon at the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson for a three movie marathon. I used my birthday coupons, too, for a free popcorn during BftMT and free admission for Halloween, since it was the only non-matinee ticket price. That was a good day. I miss the Drafthouse.

Last Friday, I stayed in & watched movies on Hulu.

The Post is the 100th "new to me" movie of the year. Good movie, I liked it.

GN was kinda funny, but not great.

TMBU was okay, but I had hoped for more. Not sure what, just more, different, something.

And the Fluffy standup was pretty funny, too. Its an older one, but I hadn't watched it before.
