I went out to Dallas/Fort Worth last week. On Wednesday, I had a ticket to the three-movie Star Trek marathon. The Cinemark in Plano, off of the tollway, showed the '09 reboot, Star Trek Into Darkness & the new Beyond. The first two were in IMAX only, while the third was IMAX 3D.

Kinda disappointed that I was the only one in a costume - wore my yellow DS9 uniform top. No props, makeup or masks, per theater policy.

The movie itself was pretty damn good. Gonna have to see it a few more times while its in theaters.

I tried to say up last night, since I have to work tonight. Fell asleep twice tryin' to watch Bewitched. Terribly stupid movie...

And, for those who may have missed the news, Hasting's is going out of business. So, my DVD rentals are gonna take a dive, unless I figure out how Redbox works.

I'm embarrass to admit it, I only seen to movies in the threate and that star trek beyond and star wars this year, hoping to see suicide squad in the coming weeks,

Went over to the Carmike in Nacogdoches this afternoon for a couple of matinees.

First up, Matt Damon's return to the Bourne franchise, with a couple of references to the one without him in it. Not too bad a movie, though I thought the Las Vegas car chase was over the top. Shouldn't that Dodge's airbag have deployed at least once? And just how many old ladies died when those slot machines got destroyed, huh? Seriously...

Also, Tommy Lee Jones is lookin' old, man. Every minute of his life is on the road map of a face he has in those close ups.

Followed that with the new one from James Franco's little brother. I actually liked this one, because of how it used online aliases, anonymity, social network peer pressure, and internet celebrity to interesting effect in its story. The initial product placement had me worried, but once it got goin', it got pretty good.

That's it for this month. The nephews & I have a plan to see Suicide Squad on Friday.

This movie felt like the later seasons of 24 when the show was starting to get tired. You have the annoying action music, shaky cam, and characters who are more like set pieces on a chess board rather than actual people. Ok, you have Jason Bourne, played as you would expect from Matt Damon, but it's more like he's playing the Jack character. You know him, his strife and what makes him tick and you root for him because you know his history. Everyone else feels like the stereotypes of an action spy thriller.

There were good moments in this movie but it was mainly going into the memory flashbacks and the Vegas scene was pretty good but lasted a little long.

Speaking of action, a lot of this action lacked emotion. The scene at the beginning for example should have been impactful because of the characters involved but I was starting to dose off.

Overall, it was decent for a summer movie but much like most sequels these day, this franchise feels tired.

And just back from Finding Dory, which was sweet without being sappy, cute without being cloying, but also amusing without being overtly funny. The animation from Pixar continues to be miraculous (the short before hand, Piper, is astonishingly brought to life with as much heart in its 5 or so minutes than most of the films I have seen this year), the new characters of the Septapus Hank, the short-sighted whale-shark Destiny and the Beluga with the best eyesight in the world, Bailey, are all fun and welcome additions to the waterworld. But like many of Pixar's sequels, some of the uniqueness and lustre of the original world seems a little lost and, as sweet as the central message is, I am not sure it is that different from the one in Nemo. Still, a nice little film with a few good laughs and a warm smile to walk out of the theatre with. So I guess it did its job pretty well. 6.5/10

Suicide Squad Big D - theater

First new movie of the month, as planned, is Suicide Squad. Took my two oldest nephews with me, decked out in our DC gear. I wore my distressed Batman logo tshirt & Batman socks. Thomas borrowed my Big Dog "Batdog Beggin'" tshirt. And James wore a brand new Harley Quinn tshirt. We went over to the Carmike Cinemas in Tyler, for their "Big D" bargain matinee show. The screen is a little bigger than a regular movie screen, with a curve to it, but not as big as the IMAX screens in movie theaters. Digital projection in 3D, with leather-esque reclinin' seats.

I was back row, center, just where I like to be, with my non-buttered popcorn & Cherry Coke.

The theater itself was almost empty. It was the three of us, and maybe five or six other folks at 4:30. And most of them showed up just as the trailers were startin'.

As for the movie, it was way more entertainin' than Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. Humor, action, character progression, motivation, and it almost made sense! Will Smith was the best part of the whole thing, and his "cheerleader tryouts" scene was one of the best of the movie. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was pretty good, too. I also liked Katana & El Diablo, and Flagg & Waller weren't too bad, either.

But, yeah, Will Smith, man.

The Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc were a little disappointin;, though.

But, still, Will Smith as Deadshot!

If ya go to see it, stick around for a bonus scene midway through the credits. There isn't anything at the end of the scroll, though.

The nephews were able to grab a couple of miniposters, the one made up to look like a bowl of cereal, after the movie. Both of 'em said they liked the movie, too, so that's a plus. At least we didn't come out of it cussin' like we did after BvS last spring.

Star Trek Beyond - my favorite Kelvin timeline movie.
Jason Bourne - a must-see for a fan of the franchise. Some scenes were a bit over the top, notably the car chase in Las Vegas, but it was fun. I had a smile on my face most of the time, although some scenes were painful to watch.

The recent 2 movies I have seen is Finding Dory and Secrets Pets of Life...they were both funny and great.

I went with B+, but it falls into a range of B+ to B for me.

I only read the first few pages of this now sixty page thread, so if I'm repeating, sorry.

Positives
This was a better movie than both 2009 and Into Darkness combined.

The character bits are really entertaining. I think Urban and Quinto are really getting good at the McCoy/Spock banter. The characters had also grown. They went from being horny teenagers in the first movie to being rounded out, but still somewhat flawed adults in this movie. It made the script slightly better than an average popcorn flick.

The Sulu is gay scene was so simple and what it needed to be. I heard a scoff from a woman behind me about it, but really, it's 2016. I also disagree with George Takei when he thinks it should have been a new character and not a standing one. You are emotionally invested in these characters and it allows you to accept his sexuality naturally instead of forcing a character in and having it being called "political correctness" in anti-LGBT circles.

The destruction of the Enterprise. I am not marveling about special effects here. I really didn't like how this ship looking from the brewery engine room to the giant middle of the ship with the long crosswalk or the stark white walls. I am hoping the new Enterprise will have a better internal design, though I am not hopefully with how NCC-1701-A was plastered in size 100 font on the belly of the saucer at the end.

Idris Elba acted the hell out of a cardboard villain. His scenes as Edison going mad in the log and during the fight with Kirk showed what he could've done with better writing for his character.

Middle Ground
I didn't hate Jaylah, but I was disappointed to see her shuttled off to Starfleet Academy. She worked for me as a rogue, someone who wanted to find her place in the universe. She still could've been brought back, but it didn't shoehorn her into wearing a Starfleet uniform.

Negatives
In the posts I did read, there was a lot of questioning of Krall's motives and I'm right there too. I would have preferred in the final log entry had said something to the effect of their distress calls not being answered, being abandoned, more of a descent into madness instead of "I'm a soldier and the Federation is weak." These people could have been pushed to their boundaries, perhaps watching their friends and colleagues die one by one, and snapped and possibly made to be more sympathetic villains. His killing of the crew members to sustain himself was written to be evil, when a line or two could have shown some pain in having to do it, a man tortured by demons.

Am I the only one who didn't get that Manas and the Lydia Wilson character were part of the Franklin crew? I don't know if I missed it, but it just seems sort of glossed over. I assumed they were some aliens that had crashed that he had co-opted into being part of his plans.

I wasn't a big fan of how this movie was shot. I can't stand the frenetic, frenzied movements and in some places, it was dark for no reason and made it more difficult to see. I find myself praying for a locked off camera shot once in a while. I found that 3D did not really add to the movie for me like it did in "The Martian." Some of the special effects, mainly Jaylah's "goo" was so horrible it was funny and left me thinking: "This was the best they could think of?" This was better than JJ's lensflares however.

I know the Federation is made of many alien species, but some of the alien crew were some of the worst CGI and makeup we've had. It was almost like: we're a science fiction show and we need to make the aliens look as alien as possible. One great example was the Ensign hiding the piece in the back of her head. She couldn't have had it on her person or known what shuttle it was in, but instead, it was let's be super alien and have her head open up and it looked silly. Some others that also spring to mind are the fish alien in the final scene and the one with a big head and what looked like a blue tattoo in the middle.

They really need to cut that Keenser creature. I don't get his redeeming qualities and at the end, it looked like they paired him with a smaller creature as a sidekick. Hell, Vin Diesel made the same three words more entertaining and sympathetic in one movie than this character has in three.

Winters Bone this evening with a young fresh faced Jennifer Lawrence. Strong performances all round, lovely air of dread running through it. Still, felt rather flat overall, but it has an interesting dynamic where women drive the story AND the violence in the piece, where one would typically expect men to reign. Depressing, but thoughtful in places. 7/10

Batman: The Killing Joke - DVD

Took my youngest nephew & the niece to see PD3D yesterday afternoon, as a reward for their recent behavior.

Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford, Karl Urban, and the creepy neighbor from American Beauty....all completely wasted in a movie about a giant puppy with wings. I don't have any nostalgia for the original, since I've only seen bits & pieces over the years, so I'm not comparing one to the other. But this new one is an all around bad movie. And it isn't worth the upcharge for 3D viewing.

Sadly, the kids liked it.

Took a nap after we got back last night, and watched the latest DC Animated feature on DVD.

I read & enjoyed the comic a few years back, and when I heard that Kevin Conroy & Mark Hamill were back again as Batman & the Joker, I was all for it. But the Batgirl - centric opening weakened the character so damn much, it made me mad. Seriously, the big bad that pushes her out is named Paris Franz? WTF?!? And of course she has a sassy gay bestie...

It got better after it used the source material.

And the credit scene bonus was nice.

Ever since I found Letterboxd, I decided I really don't need to post movie reviews here anymore, but I saw a movie today called Hell or High Water and I'm still thinking about it. It's basically a modern western speaking to our times and hardships. I would recommend anyone who is looking for a great movie to go see this one. It also has Chris Pine, so there's your Star Trek connection.

I had Patton on the PVR for months now and finally got a chance to watch the classic.

George C. Scott is perfect in the role. The movie paints him as this larger than life character and Scott is able to perform. He is surrounded by a good supporting cast, especially Karl Malden.

20) We Are Marshall - C-

I've seen this movie a few times and it just gets worse and worse. I would've rather seen a movie about Ian McShane's character, his pain and dealing with the loss.
