Used a coupon from Hasting's, rented a few movies the other day.

Watched GoE yesterday. That movie sucked out loud. Boring story, bad acting, piss poor special effects & too obvious green screen, and a complete waste of Geoffrey Rush. Two hours of my life I will never get back...

Watchin' TFH now, so far, so good.

Picked up Now You See Me, too. I saw it in theaters, but it was so damn forgettable, I figured I better watch it before the sequel comes out.

My rewatch of the MCU continues with the movie about a very muscular god and Marvel's best villain

I've always enjoyed Thor, even though it's admittedly near the bottom of my MCU rankings. The look of this film is really amazing, and the visual effects guys did a great job developing the alien world of Asgard and the ice world. While the other Marvel films felt more grounded to this point, this one felt like the Marvel films were really becoming a universe, only to be expanded more with Guardians of the Galaxy a few years later.

I also really liked the character relationships. We have Loki, who at this point is the best Marvel villain so far, the relationship between Thor his father, Jane, and of course, Loki.

However, what fails the movie is some of the bad humor of the human cast, as well as the action sequences. In a sense, this movie is kind of dull, at least duller than a lot of the other MCU films at this point. The action on Earth feels anti-climatic, and the scene between Thor and Loki at the end could have had a more emotional resonance.

The movie is decent, and there is a lot to like about this film, but it comes up a little bit short overall.

My feelings on Thor are that it's excellent but spoilt by some of the acting, especially Natalie Portman. She comes off like a giddy teenager in some parts and I find it distracting.

If she didn't, it might have been a little too serious for my tastes. Jane was not a liability to this movie, but then again I do like Natalie Portman as an actress and I'm bummed she won't be back for Thor 3.

I watched two movies on HBO last night, Man from Uncle and Spy. It must have been spy night.

Man from Uncle - HBO - Can be summed up in one word, DULL!!!!! I'll use some additional words but, what a boring movie. The pacing was so off in this movie, paint drying thinks it's slow and weird. Before this, I've only seen Henry Cavill in MOS & BvS and I always thought he was sorta engaging. He has a ton of charm in this but honestly, I think he's just a wet towel.

Spy - HBO - While I really liked Melissa McCarthy on Mike and Molly, this is the first movie of hers that I've watched. It was better than I expected but not really because of Melissa. Yeah, she's somewhat funny in that Melissa McCarthy kinda way. However almost everything else around her was better. This movie is made by Jason Statham, I would rather watch a movie about his Ford character. He could be the new Inspector Clouseau.

Watched a few movies durin' my day off yesterday.

BA was a nice movie about a down & out record producer who "discovers" a singer/song writer and helps her record an album while she deals with the fallout of her break up from a newly minted rock star. Not a fan of Mark Ruffalo, but even his role as the producer could ruin the movie for me.

SKoB was alright, not great. When your movie has Jessica Alba, Salma Hayek, and Pierce Brosnan but Malcolm McDowell turns out to be the best part of your movie about a womanizin' English professor, you've made a mistake somewhere along the way.

TRtED was a nice animated film, with Kevin Kline & Kenneth Branaugh as the lead voice actors. Two cheatin' rogues from Spain wind up in Central-ish America and are mistaken for gods by an Aztec-like tribe while searchin' for gold. Couple of cheesy musical numbers, but I still liked it.

PoE was the animated story of Exodus. Val Kilmer did good work as the voice of Moses and God.

Rewatchin' The Mummy Returns now, just 'cause I rewatched The Mummy the other day...

    16) Thor (2011) - B- (Rewatch)
    17) Marvel's The Avengers (2012) - A (Rewatch)

When you're watching the MCU in a short period of time, you get to a movie like The Avengers and you can just appreciate what kind of universe Marvel was trying to set up and the payoff this movie brings. I remember when I saw this when it originally came out and I loved it because it was these superheroes teaming up against (At this point) Marvel's best villain in Loki and this was as close to an event movie as you can get. We didn't need origin stories, we didn't need dull moments of character set up. We needed the team to join together and that's what this movie does.

Watching it now, I appreciate it more for not just the fun, but those little character moments that you will see again. The tension between Captain America and Tony Stark, for instance, really shines here and brings me back to when I saw Civil War and the reason for that movie. I also loved seeing Scarlett Johannson as Black Widow and seeing more of that backstory develop.

The action here was also really top notch. That scenes over New York is what makes this such an epic climax to this event movie. It was such a big moment that has repurcussions in the future films as well as Netflix's Jessica Jones and Daredevil.

This movie also maintained the fun, but didn't overdo it like Age of Ultron was trying to do. Loved the stuff with Caulson, and the two Pepper Pots cameos were great. This movie is just as good now as it was when I first saw it. Watching all the movies together in a short time, I think it might come off as better than when I first saw it.

    16) The Manchurian Candidate (2004) - D+

I've been hyped up to see this one for many years, so I was probably disappointed more than otherwise.

I know it's based on the Sinatra movie, which in turn is based on the novel, but there are so many storylines that are not given any lip service past a glancing look.

Two examples: Bruno Ganz and Dean Stockwell.

I love Ganz (I'll admit I only found him because of the Downfall parodies), but he has two scenes and exists solely to unlock Denzel's memories and drop exposition, not explaining how Denzel knows him outside of a throwaway line. What is his past? What is he doing with those monkeys?

Stockwell, like Ganz shows up in a handful of scenes, we understand he is a big shot with the baddies. But is money his motive? Power? What are his motivations?

It really needed to cut the characters or work them into its plot.

    17) Mr Hockey: The Gordie Howe Story - C-

Found this on CBC after Howe's passing earlier this week and it showed it's TV movie colors.

I'd have to hear more of Howe from his younger years, but Shanks trying to be anyone but Daniel Jackson simply does nothing for me. He seems to be brooding, doing anything to distance himself from early, nerdy Daniel.

As with The Manchurian Candidate, it had too many story lines going on and needed to be trimmed down. I also wasn't a fan of it's re-arranging history just to end with a championship moment.

    17) Marvel's The Avengers (2012) - A (Rewatch)
    18) Iron Man 3 (2013) - B- (Rewatch)

Watching this movie almost immediately after watching Avengers feels like a big step down, despite the fact that there was a lot to like about IM3. I guess after the big epic movie event of Avengers, the thing that came after it would feeler smaller, but IM3's drop was very noticeable. Still, while I liked Iron Man, and thought IM2 was somewhat decent, this one feels much more in between. The climatic action was probably the best of the three IM movies, and I've always loved this kick ass soundtrack. Also, you can't go wrong with Downy Jr. as Tony Stark, which is always a highlight. Also, I'm glad they dealt with Tony's PTSD after the stuff in New York. That was actually one of the highlights of the movie I wish they explored more of.

However, what almost kills this movie is the whole Manderin thing. Here was a scary menacing villian and it was portrayed by Ben Kingsley for heaven sake, and how they dealt with it was massively disappointing.

    19) Thor The Dark World (2014) - D+ (Rewatch)

This is my second least favorite Marvel films, and after watching the previous films close together, it's easy to get why. I liked Thor, but part of that was was because I thought the movie had personality and humor. The Dark World felt bland in comparison, with a bad unmemorable villain and a story that was just not very interesting. However, there was some good bits, like Darcy being the humorous sidekick, and getting a little more screentime, and we got some consequences to Eric's story from Avengers. Also, the best part of this movie was Loki, but mainly because he makes such a very interesting multi-dimensional character. This is a very average film, and comparing it to the rest of the MCU, it's one of the weakest.

Used a coupon yesterday & rented a couple of DVDs from Hasting's.

HC! was pretty stupid. The best part of the whole damn movie was in the trailer, for cryin' out loud! Would that it were so simple, indeed...

LHF was worse. Couldn't believe I spent an hour and a half of my life watchin' that one this morning.

Ah, well, at least the rentals were cheap, and I'll get credit on my account since I returned 'em this afternoon.

Will be down in Houston tomorrow & Monday, debatin' on if I should go to one of the Alamo Drafthouses while I'm there.

I would call this a decent sequel to Finding Nemo. It was fun, and had the Pixar emotion you would come to expect. It's nowhere near as good as Inside Out, which I think is Pixar's best film, but it was nice.

This is my favorite Marvel film and it still is my favorite Marvel film in this post "Civil War" era. This movie had so much going for it, adding to the MCU, giving us some major plot twists, and really pushing the phase two portion of the universe forward. What makes this movie stand out from the rest though is it still feels like a stand alone movie. You have themes of loyalty, questioning where you belong and if what you're fighting for matches up to what you think you should be fighting for, and above all else, trust and friendship.

All of those themes is basically what Captain America as a whole are all about. I've loved the Captain America avenger ever since I first started watching these movies because he is the personification of freedom and values that are worth fighting for. We see in this movie Rogers starts to question the world around him and the scene he had with Peggy was really well done and brought home that aspect.

This movie also features some of the best action Marvel has ever done. The scenes with the three helicarriers are really just fun to watch and the fight sequences, especially with Black Widow are always a joy. I read some reviews saying it was too difficult to understand, yet I could understand what was happening.

Watching this movie again and now close to the other movies, I'm starting to pick up a lot of cool stuff that I missed before. For example, this movie referenced the first Captain America (I was thinking, this is how you do a sequel), Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, and basically Shield as a whole. While the MCU has been going out of this world with aliens and Thor at this point, this movie remained grounded on earth, and man, what a joy it was to watch. This is how you do a modern smart blockbuster.
