Angelina Jolie is one of the most painful actresses to watch on screen and this was no different. It's a visually confusing mess that has no real storyline. Avoid at all costs.

For the special occasion of my fiftieth movie review of the year, my long-awaited (by Harvey) review of the 2013 Star Trek movie, which has been the subject of not-inconsiderable controversy. Is this the worst Star Trek movie, as some fans voted? No. Even at his worst, Abrams as a director knows how to make a decent action scene and keeps the pace going, which puts the movie well ahead of some other entries in the series.

I like Into Darkness more than you, but your review is pretty fair. :)

If I had to choose, think I would say I favor the sequel over the '09 movie, for two reasons. One, Khan and Marcus make for more rounded villains (and I like that Khan spends a good portion of the movie as Kirk's ally) than Nero.

Two, the plotting of the sequel makes more sense to me than that of the earlier film. Into Darkness doesn't have a sequence that betrays plausibility for the sake of plot like the one in the '09 film where (1) Spock jettisons Kirk from the Enterprise, (2) Kirk encounters Spock and Scotty, the only inhabitants of Delta Vega, and (3) Spock can reprogram the transporter into being super-powerful at the click of a few buttons. These events aren't motivated by character; they happen because the story needs them to. Sulu telling Khan how many torpedoes he has aimed at him happens because the story needs him to, but it's also a good character beat.

If Spock were to leave Kirk behind on a frozen wasteland, I'd imagine that he'd want him to be near an outpost so that he doesn't die. I'd also imagine that Old Spock would want to be near that outpost as well. As for reprogramming the transporter, maybe the mechanism was built for that.

Rewatched The Raid: Redemption last night for the first time since it was in theaters. Still a freakin' awesome movie.

Watched The Raid 2, which is set immediately after the events of the first movie. Some good action sequences spread throughout, but way too much talkin' considerin' how action was in the first one.

I like the first one more, that's for sure.

Watchin' The Wolf of Wall Street right now...pretty good, so far.

This movie almost lost me in the opening moments when it tried to pass Rosie O'Donnell off as a doctor with a boyfriend.

It was nice, it was nostalgic, but the message, if there was one, got muddled in the story. Is it to live every day to the fullest? I'm not really sure.

26) Machete - B

I think I over-psyched myself for this one. The trailer looked awesome, but even if it was intended to be a little bit goofy, Latino-explotation, there are just some moments were it gets so ridiculous that it takes me out of the moment and I can't follow it.

Props go to one of my favorite actors: Jeff Fahey and Cheech Marin as Machete's brother.

Lego Movie - On Demand - Watched the Lego Movie this morning with my boys. They liked it, I thought it was just okay. Best part of the movie was Liam Neeson's Bad Cop/Good Cop. If this whole movie was about Batman and Bad Cop/Good Cop I think it would have been better. While not a bad movie, it was just underwhelming.

Well, TWoWS turned out to be an odd sort of biopic, but it has a great cast and a lot of female nudity, so, ya know, what the hell, why not watch it?

Played some Assassin's Creed this afternoon before watchin' Jason Statham & James Franco in Homefront. That was an alright movie about an ex-DEA agent gettin' mixed up almost by accident with the local meth dealer.

Watchin' Christian Bale & Casey Affleck in Out of the Furnace now...guess its a white trash double feature tonight.

Apes was a pretty good movie, but there were some parts where I was a little bored. The work of the Apes was great, but I found the story a little predictable and not really as engaging as Rise.

I liked Edge of Tomorrow better. It had an interesting premise (Kind of Groundhog Day meets Aliens meets The Matrix) and Cruise and Blunt were really good in it. I was a little confused about the ending though. Other than that, I really enjoyed this one.

I liked the first movie fine, but I felt no particular compulsion to see this, despite all the praise. But I found myself near the movie theatre on Sunday afternoon and saw that there was a showing in ten minutes, and my work is making me miserable, so I thought, why not? I thought this was much much funnier than the first one, particularly Channing Tatum's character, and the way Lord and Miller relentlessly parody the concept of sequels (the end credits list of future installments omits the sequel where the protagonists have kids, but that's about it). I do wonder, though, with the huge box office of this movie, surely the studio will want another sequel, and I'm not sure where you'd go from here, after the movie has so comprehensively taken a flamethrower to sequels.

Holy Shit...the guy that directed(Josh Trank) this film is the one tapped for the new Fantastic Four reboot!! Maybe I'm misremembering but I seem to recall this film getting some fairly positive WOM at the time of it's release that translated into Trank getting the F4 reboot gig. I looked, it's RT critic/fan rank is fair to good. Another reason critics miss it as far as me ever considering them as a reason to see a film.

At only 120min I found it painfully slow to watch. Found no reason to be vested in the characters. If this movie were handed out free I'd take it just to remove the packaging material, toss out the DVD so I could reuse the case to store better discs.

The only reason it's not an outright F is I give them some cgi/fx props. I've tuned out the F4 remake already but if I was still holding out hope for it I'd be fully moving my #1 concern to director.

Took my nephews to the theater yesterday for DotPofA 2D. I enjoyed it quite a bit, especially since it took the story of the reboot, and rather than rehash it, set the character apart and changed from the events of the first film. None of the human characters are the same, but the apes consist of Ceaser, Koba, Rocket & Maurice from the first. And ten years the "simian flu" wipes out most of humanity...

Anyway, yeah, kinda freakin' awesome, made even more so by Andy Serkis gettin' top billed.

After the movie, we went by Hasting's, and my nephew rented M7, an animated feature with Stan Lee as himself encounterin' a crashed alien ship with seven superpowered extraterrestrials aboard. He offers them a place to live in exchange for the rights to their likeness & powers so he can start a new comic book series. The nephew liked it, so that's good. I used store credit to cover the bulk of the rental, so it was cheap, which was also good.

Not sure what my next trip to the theater will be...

Jon Favreau's story about artist whose skills have atrophied under a creativity-killing corporate overlord, who escapes to rediscover his skills and rededicate himself to his passion. This is in no way him expressing his frustration at recent blockbuster filmmaking in the form of making an indie movie. Albeit, this feels a bit self-congratulatory, as Jon Favreau was never an edgy auteur operating on the edge of Hollywood with critical adoration. Also, his next movie is a Disney live-action version of The Jungle Book. And he casts Scarlett Johansson and Sofia Vergara as, respectively, a coworker he hooks up with and his ex-wife (though I guess he restrains himself by never kissing either onscreen).

Okay, that catalogue aside, I quite liked the movie, which is a low-key comedy, and a pretty effective father/son bonding movie. Also, Favreau clearly knows his way around a kitchen, and there's a palpable authenticity to the food preparation, the food culture, etc. They visit a number of different locales in the South on a drive across America selling Cuban sandwiches (which they modify along the way with various things they pick up), which is interesting to see. This is easily the most I've ever liked John Leguizamo in a movie. I think the final few minutes are a bit unnecessary.

I still haven't seen John Carney's breakthrough 2006 musical romance Once (I plan to when the opportunity arises); this is the third film he's made since then, but the first one that's attracted any real attention. The bare beats of the story, about a down-on-his-luck record executive who aims to turn a songwriter he ran into in a bar into a new musical talent, is fairly familiar, albeit with one or two divergences in the formula (the ending, mainly).

Rather like Chef, it's a project that succeeds largely on the basis of strong performances and considerable charm, but it scores higher than Chef because Carney is more restrained in his writing, and, despite the generally optimistic outlook, he doesn't throw in what feel like unearned moments (well, you could maybe make that case for one part of it, but I think it works better here, partly because it's part of an expectation subversion). Keira Knightley says she had no singing experience before recording the songs for this, and if that's true, she should consider putting in the hours to further hone things, because her voice is quite pleasant, and she largely carries the music (with an assist from Adam Levine); this is the most fun role she's had in a long time. James Corden is a lot of fun as her friend, and I really liked Hailee Steinfeld as Mark Ruffalo's somewhat sullen daughter.

Since this is a musical of sorts, the soundtrack is the most memorable soundtrack of original tunes for a live action movie in a long time, thanks to the efforts of former New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this repeats Once's feat of winning the Best Original Song Oscar.

James Gray's superb drama about a Polish immigrant who arrives in New York in 1921, featuring a superb lead performance from Marion Cotillard, ably supported by Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner (in a very uncharacteristic sort of performance). I'd be really interested to know how movies like this get financed, as Gray was able to scrape together $16 million to make this movie despite only one of his movies making the sort of domestic box office that would remotely suggest he could cover that (indeed, this movie's total box office domestically has been about $2 million). However he did it, I'm glad. New York is probably the most-filmed city in the history of cinema, but few of the times I've seen it have conjured the degree of atmosphere of a past New York that Gray does here.

Watched the HC documentary yesterday. It takes a look at the McDonald's coffee incident that started a wave of legislative tort reform and changes to the way businesses influence laws & judges to protect themselves from lawsuits.

Pretty informative, too.

Took one of my nephews to see the new Transformers today. He seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. I just wish they could make a good live action movie. At least they had a good cast this time out, with Kelsey Grammer, Stanley Tucci & Mark Wahlberg.
