22 Jump Street - theater

I took my two oldest nephews out to the Carmike 6 in Nacogdoches to see 22 Jump Street yesterday for their cheap matinee of the day.

Now, I grew up watchin' the television show, and just a couple of years ago, I rewatched the whole thing on DVD 'cause I found it for cheap at Best Buy. And I liked the first movie, it was fun.

This sequel is a mess, though. Its too much like the first, with jokes about how exactly like the first movie it will turn out to be throughout the film. The jokes aren't as funny. Split screen is used too much. And there is a gay thing goin' on, but they never follow through with it.

The funniest part of the whole thing is the end credits, which has a series of sequels, product tie-ins and the celebrity cameos.

Went out to the Cinemark in Lufkin last night to see Edge of Tomorrow. I went with the 2D show, and considerin' how dark the big climax is at the end, I'm glad I didn't bother with 3D.

But let me tell y'all, if ya haven't seen it, and ya can, go. It was a damn good scifi movie. Tom Cruise knows how to make a good one, and Emily Blunt was suitably bad ass, too. And its Bill Paxton had a nice supportin' role.

I'd like to go see it again, to be honest...but I'll have to wait for the DVD.

Had my first day of trainin' at a new job today.

Back at the house now, watchin' Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor & Redd Foxx in Harlem Nights via Netflix Instant.

With this, I've seen all but two of the Coens' movies (Raising Arizona and The Man Who Wasn't There). I'm not a big fan of John Turturro as an actor, so I wasn't especially anxious to see this one, though it's pretty good. The Coens wrote it to be intentionally ambiguous, and at times I think it would be more interesting if they committed more to any one of the various elements the movie hints at. They've got John Mahoney in the movie doing a pretty good parody of William Faulkner, for instance, but the movie doesn't really have anything to say about Faulkner as a writer. John Goodman steals the show, though weirdly it was Michael Lerner who got an Oscar nomination for the film.

43. Miller's Crossing (A+)

This was one of the first Coens films I watched, and it remains my favourite work of theirs, and one of my favourite films, period. Terrific gangster film, with a great plot that I'd forgotten a lot of the details of in the years since I last watched it. This was the first time I watched it on Blu-ray, and the visuals look truly amazing.

62. Breathe In ★★★ It's got Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce in some great performances, but the movie doesn't ever go the extra mile.

I laughed a lot at the trailer, when it's on demand I'll get to watch it.

R.I.P.D. - HBO on demand - Wanted to check this out because of Jeff Bridges. He makes this movie totally watchable. His over the top lawman is so much fun. While I actually liked the movie, overall it wasn't a very good movie. There is a good movie in there somewhere but it's not really anywhere to be found. Ryan Reynolds is all sorts of blah in this. Maybe if they cast a different actor, this movie could have had more life. Ryan Reynolds character is the straight man in this, you can't take Ryan Reynolds serious enough in this movie so any credibility is lost.

I brief write up in the main discussion thread here. What I forgot to mention there was that for being featured heavily in the posters and trailers the film is sorely lacking real time for the Dinobots. Felt we were a bit robbed there.

Glad you enjoyed Saving Mr.Banks Keith1701, especially if my mini review helped in deciding to watch it then.

My theory on Adam Sandler's career is that after audiences and the Academy rejected his initial bid to be taken more seriously, he decided to punish them by making the laziest, least-funny films he could. It took about a decade for American to realize they were being insulted.

I've now seen all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films apart from his earliest work, Hard Eight. This is probably the least-interesting of the ones that I've seen, though Sandler is quite good in the lead role (and having him and a pre-24 Mary-Lynn Rajskub as siblings is great casting). As a romantic dramedy, there's very little to the central romance. The movie is quirky without being particularly funny, a prime example being the sideplot about Sandler being blackmailed by a fake phone sex line being run out of a Utah furniture store -- it feels like if you gave this basic plot outline to the Coen Brothers they would do something far more interesting and blackly humorous with it. I do quite like the unusual musical score.

45. The General (A)

The second film by Buster Keaton that I've watched (the first being Sherlock Jr., which I wasn't overly impressed with). The General is far and away Keaton's most well-regarded film these days, making the Top 20 on the AFI's most recent Top 100 American Films list, and placing in both 2012 Sight and Sound polls, at 34 (critics) and 75 (directors). I'm kind of surprised the directors didn't place this higher, given the technical virtuosity on display in some of these sequences (this was one of the most expensive movies of its day).

As might be discerned from the rating, I was quite impressed by this overall, even if I don't think silent comedy is really my thing, at the end of the day (it's almost wholly reliant on sight gags and pratfalls). At 78 minutes, this is much closer to feature length than the earlier Keaton movie, and develops more of a story. It's quite inventive, and while I stand by what I said about being less interested in sight gags and pratfalls as comedy, Keaton's physical daring in both this and Sherlock Jr. is astonishing.

67. Pretty Maids All in a Row (✩✩✩✩) - Download - A 1971 murder mystery/sex comedy starring Rock Hudson, Angie Dickinson and Telly Savalas. James Doohan also has a role and the screenplay was written by Gene Roddenberry. The movie is discussed here.

68. Some Velvet Morning (✩✩✩) - Download - Man leaves his wife and shows up at a young woman's place. Conversation ensues. This movie has only two players. Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve. It's like Before Sunset/Sunrise, but unlike those movies, what goes on between the two characters isn't all that engaging. It has one hell of an ending though, so it's worth a look just based on that.

69. Under the Skin (✩✩✩) - Download - A fully nude Scarlett Johansson is the hook. What you get is an artsy overrated piece, and for the life of me, I can't understand why it's getting so much buzz. I can sort of see it a little bit the more I think about it actually, but not totally at this point.

70. Bad Words (✩✩✩½) - Download - Jason Bateman directs and stars in a movie about a grown man participating in a spelling bee intended for kids, and the parents and administrators' can't get him out of there. The movie starts slow but it's actually pretty good and his character actually has his reasons for doing what he's doing. As the latest in a long line of crass assholish characters, Bateman does pretty well and he is pretty funny. Do check it out for a laugh or two. Love the promo poster…

71. Syrup (✩✩✩) - Netflix - Guy has a million-dollar idea that gets stollen from him. He then launches another one with the help of an attractive exec played by Amber Heard. This one started off well and it's a fun educational piece about marketing but it kind of falters a bit here and there.

72. I Think I Do (✩✩) - Download - Mia Kirshner gets dumped at the alter. Crap Lifetime movie but it had Mia Kirshner.

Used a coupon for a free rental from Hasting's & got the latest DC animated movie.

TiT has two young wanna be heroes in the future release a frozen Lex Luthor by accident, while also mentionin' a way to time travel. Luthor travels back to stop Superman from existin', and that keeps the Justice League from ever formin'.

And its up to the two young wannabes to step and fix their mistake to save the future!

The animated looked cheap for this one, and I first saw it as a Target store exclusive, so I figured a free rental would be the best way to watch it. Kinda wish I hadn't bothered.

As with the classic Super Friends cartoon, Robin is a member of the Justice League, but Batman verbally bitch slaps him throughout the movie.

On the plus side, Diedrich Bader (The Brave and the Bold) provides the voice of Batman.

A Polish drama that is currently attracting some buzz on the art house circuit, this is the story of an 18-year-old Catholic novitiate on the verge of taking her vows who is sent to meet with her only surviving relative before she does so; said relative is a cynical, alcoholic judge in the Polish Communist apparatus. They go on a road trip to explore her past; this is one of those premises that could easily be played as farce, but this is a fairly spare drama (black-and-white and filmed in the Academy ratio) about the statue of postwar Polish society (touching on a few things explored in the graphic novel Maus, among other places). The two leads are both superb, and probably 99% of the film rests on them, and they conduct themselves admirably.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa .5 - Netflix Instant

I think I've seen all the Jackass movies...and Johnny Knoxville isn't terrible when he makes movies like Men in Black II & The Last Stand. And I was hopin' to be entertained by this when I saw it was added to Netflix the other day.

But, turns out this isn't the movie that was released to theaters. There's no plot to it - its a feature-length retrospective / makin' of for Bad Grandpa, with stuff that I assume wasn't in the movie, since most of it doesn't include the kid from the movie posters.

There are interviews with the cast & crew, behind the scenes stuff, and I hope that Netflix gets the real movie soon, 'cause I would still like to see it, but I don't want to pay to rent it from Hasting's.

July is off to a disappointin' start for movies...

The sequel to Dreamworks' best movie to date has been a dramatic underperformer at the summer box office, to the confusion of many, and has inspired some debate regarding whether it is better or worse than the original. I say it's less accomplished, though still a good movie, and I'd say it deserves to be doing better than it is. The movie's main strength is the interactions between Hiccup and his family, notably his newly-introduced mother (all the trailers spoil this, for some reason). As well, the animation is truly beautiful. On the side of weaknesses, the introduction of a true human antagonist here is pretty dull, and the movie dutifully brings back a passel of comic relief characters from the first film without having anything much for them to do (even Astrid, Hiccup's girlfriend, could have been written out of this pretty easily).

48. Jane Eyre (B+)

This 2011 adaptation got good notices from some critics I respect, but I never made time to see it at the time of release -- however, after seeing director Cary Fukunaga's work on HBO's True Detective, I decided to look at some of his theatrical work. It's pretty good, and Fukunaga's command of atmosphere is as evident here as it was on TV, though the movie also highlights how very uncinematic the plot of Jane Eyre is (basically, Jane decides to go back to Rochester, having decided from a place of total financial security (thanks, unknown relative who kindly left me a huge inheritance, you reliable staple of 19th century fiction!), and finds that the plot has tidied itself up whilst she was away).

49. The Fault in Our Stars (A-)

My friend and I went to see this tonight, and I thought it was pretty good. I mainly went to see it for Shailene Woodley, who is indeed superb in the lead -- indeed, she kind of unbalances the movie, because Hazel is such a well-realized character that she just makes Augustus (despite the good performance of the actor) look like the Fantasy Boyfriend that he is. Fantasy Girlfriends have long been a staple of male-centric cinema, so this is far from unprecedented, of course (and it's mainly Hazel's story, so if he does his job of supporting her narrative well, perhaps he's done well enough).

50. Star Trek Into Darkness (B-)

For the special occasion of my fiftieth movie review of the year, my long-awaited (by Harvey) review of the 2013 Star Trek movie, which has been the subject of not-inconsiderable controversy. Is this the worst Star Trek movie, as some fans voted? No. Even at his worst, Abrams as a director knows how to make a decent action scene and keeps the pace going, which puts the movie well ahead of some other entries in the series.

At the same time, I think it's more than fair to call it a disappointment, particularly as I was a big fan of the original, which I thought was a slick update. Somewhat cheerily superficial in places, sure, but it was an iteration of Trek that really worked on the big screen, and the emotional core worked. This succumbs to a lot of the work aspects of contemporary blockbuster filmmaking. The plot makes some rudimentary stabs at social commentary, but loses interest in that very quickly.

The Khan casting has been endlessly debated, but in brief I tend to side with those who think it was a mistake (not helped by the comments of some people involved in the production). Moreover, using Khan at all was a mistake, as it comes across as an attempt to graft the post-The Dark Knight blockbuster template onto Trek (i.e., bring in the archnemesis for the sequel), but Star Trek has never really operated like that. Khan and Kirk's antagonism was the result of a couple of highly specific stories, and without them there's really no inherent dynamic there; something the movie seems to roundaboutly acknowledge by cribbing a bunch of other things from Khan's most famous experience (Carol Marcus, the engine room sacrifice) that are totally unrelated to him, just to increase the sense of parallel.

Most of all, I dislike the movie's character arc for Kirk. Star Trek has always been about adults, but Kirk's arc here has him arguably acting less mature than he was in the first movie, and less like a ship captain than a 20something man-boy (as seems to have become a default protagonist in a lot of blockbusters these days). I guess the movie is supposed to be about him overcoming that, but that was also what the first movie was about.

What does work? The cast remains strong (and Alice Eve is a nice addition to the group, even if the script doesn't have much for her to do), the little interactions generally deliver, and the action is well-executed (whatever modern blockbuster conventions Abrams may bring to Trek, his approach to using his camera is much more Spielberg than Michael Bay, and we can be thankful for that).

This real life tale(I didn't realize that) starring Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Hayden Church about an adventure journalist whose wife dies leading to his son spiraling into a behavior problem causes him to leap into his own first true adventure.

I found it to be a charming and cute film. The actress who plays the 7yr old may be one to keep an eye on it. She's got a screen presence to her. She could be the next Abigail Breslin for this generation.

I enjoyed seeing Damon and Johansson in a film playing regular people as well. I felt they also did it well since their action roles of late have defined them. This allowed them to show an ability to connect with feelings and humanity that are often buried in an action role cause the story calls for it.
