    3. Larry Crowne: B+

I found this to be highly enjoyable film. Very cute. Smartly done rom/com for the topic of Larry and those he encounters. It also doesn't hurt, I admit, that I enjoy the NBC show Community and this also felt like that for much of the film as well.

It was cute and loving without being flashy. It was sexy in a passive way which lends itself to a larger sense of awe in the way this was presented. Very underrated, deserved better at the box office.

I just caught 'The Incredible Burt Wonderstone' on The Movie Network. I am surprised to say that I enjoyed it for what it was - a divertissement. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be based on what it pulled in at the box office.

    2. The Kings of Summer (2013) ★★★1/2
    3. About Time (2013) ★★★★

    UPDATE:

    4. Carrie (2013) ★★1/2
It's actually not a bad movie for a while. But if they went through the trouble of casting a teenager for Carrie, why are the "Mean Girls" pushing 30? I would liked to have seen more of the interaction between Carrie and her mother. The last 15 minutes are silly.

    5. We Are What We Are (2013) ★★1/2
There's a good movie just dying to get out of here. There are some good performances, but it's just not enough of an attention grabber to get a rave review from me. The ending is worth the slow build up, though.

    6. Saving Mr Banks ★★★1/2
Emma Thompson is extremely annoying in this role. I guess that works.

    Welcome back.

    1. Philomena (B+)

Stephen Frears is a very interesting director, in that I have a hard time identifying much of a unifying style to his filmography, beyond generally being of high quality. A restraint with material that might be mawkish in other hands, perhaps; certainly that's in evidence here, approaching the story of a woman searching for her child, who she was forced to give up for adoption 50 years earlier after giving birth in an Irish Catholic institute for unwed mothers. The story is a tragicomedy, one part buddy movie (pairing Judi Dench's titular goodhearted, if somewhat simple, title character with Steve Coogan's journalist, who is a mix of cynical and righteous) and one part sad story (the resolution to Philomena's search is bittersweet at best). There are plenty of opportunities for corny or overly sentimental emotional beats, but the script manages to sidestep them. It's a fairly simple story, but well-told, and superbly acted by Dench.

The cinema didn't mention the 3d one on the website for times. We only noticed there was that option when we got there (though 3 hours later) I thought the 2d version was fine but then generally, I'm not fussed either way.

Well, The Joneses was an alright movie.

TRU was a depressin' documentary about the tunnels built by Nazi / SS slave labor durin' WWII. Some are still in use, oddly enough.

ItL was an odd movie about British & American officials contemplatin' war in the Middle East. My favorite bit was between James Gandolfini as an American general and Peter Capaldi as a British official threatenin' each other.

Watched TOM this mornin', with Liam Neeson as a widower who finds out his late wife, played by Laura Linney, had an affair with another man, played by Antonio Banderas. It was a sad drama, and a bit hard to follow 'cause of the flashbacks & such.

Followed that with ON, a documentary about the Nixon White House usin' a mix of archive news footage & interviews, audio recordings & Super 8 home movies.

Watchin' Chuck's fourth season now, since my nephews are up & movin' 'round...

I paid for the 3D, since it was the only show durin' the cheap matinee hour (Carmike has a thing, shows from 4 to 5:30 are only $5.50). The upcharge put the cost at $8. It really wasn't worth it...

    1. The Land Unknown (1957) -- C-
    2. Seconds (1966) -- B+
    3. Earth Vs. The Flying Saucers (1956) -- C
    4. Play It Again, Sam (1972) -- A-

I had avoided this movie for a long time because Woody Allen didn't direct it, but having seen it now, I realize that was a stupid prejudice to have against it. Herbert Ross does fine work, and Woody Allen's unique voice comes through vividly. It isn't quite as memorable as Annie Hall, but it's a remarkably similar comedy that is much more like that film than Allen's earlier use of slapstick (although there are a few elements of that here when Allen knocks over every breakable in sight, and during the fantasy fight sequence in the bakery).

It's especially good because it never feels stagebound, despite being a theater adaptation. The quick cutaways, which in many ways are the predecessors to the "Remember that time when..." jokes popularized by (ugh) Family Guy, help, as do the excursions into fantasy that take advantage of the medium's unique capabilities.

This Liam Neeson film about man vs nature&the elements after a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness is not very exciting. There is essentially no reason to care about who survives as no one but Neeson's character is given any depth. Even as the script allows for some time to get a bit of background on some of the survivors as the trek for help you can't help but root for the wolves at times. Then to top it off the film has an anti-climatic ending by not actually giving you an end. I'm sure they thought that by leaving it open ended, allowing the viewer to fill in what might've happened that they were being, I dunno, artistic but it fell flat for me.

Needs more extreme close-ups of people eating.

After hearing about this movie for almost a year since the 2013 Cannes festival, it's nice to finally get a chance to see it. It largely lives up to the hype, especially regarding the performances of the lead actresses. Lea Seydoux I was already familiar with, particularly for Farewell, My Queen, but Adele Exarchopoulos is phenomenal. I'm not sure whether I'd consider her or Cate Blanchett as the best female performance of the year (blue is certainly the favourite colour for actresses this year); it's a performance of remarkable range, covering the character from age 17 to what must be her late 20s at least.

Since the sex scenes have generated considerable discussion, I'll give my two cents: there are three notable ones, and the latter two are fine; the first one is overlong, and goes well past making the point of Adele finding genuine fulfillment in sex (in contrast with the short, brief hetero scene earlier that fails to satisfy her).

    1. The Manor (✩✩✩✩) - Live TV - A documentary film by an aspiring film-maker named Shawney Cohen. It's about his family business which is a strip club called The Manor which is in Guelph, Ontario. It's a lighthearted take on his parents, his brother and how he feels about the strip club which he claims has affected his relationships but to me it looks like it's his attitude that does him in. Watch the trailer here.

    5. Lincoln (2012) -- B+

For the most part, this is what a good biopic should be. Rather than trying to compress Lincoln's entire life into 150 minutes, it instead offers a portrait of Lincoln during the last months of his life, focusing on his push to pass the 13th Amendment by the end of January, 1865. When the film is focused on these political machinations, it is superb, and surprisingly unsentimental for Spielberg. Daniel Day-Lewis is, to no one's surprise, excellent in the title role, but as Thaddeus Stevens, Tommy Lee Jones might offer the best performance in the movie. Stevens certainly had an interesting life; time for a sequel about his clashes with Andrew Johnson!

I'm not sure it's a great movie, though. Although Lincoln's political life is fully realized, the script struggles to give dimension to his personal life. Lincoln's relationship with his older son, Robert (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) strikes me as a distraction, and their conflict (Lincoln wants Robert to finish law school, but Robert wants to enlist) is basically without stakes, since when Robert does enlist he becomes a clerk for General Grant, which carries little risk. The depiction of Lincoln's troubled marriage is more interesting (and Sally Field is good as his wife), although an early scene between the two involving a dream sequence is tonally odd.

The movie also goes on for too long. The climax is the passage of the amendment, and the epilogue is Lincoln's meeting with the Confederate peace envoy. Subsequent scenes showing the surrender at Appomattox, Lincoln leaving for Ford's Theatre, Lincoln on his death bed (the assassination isn't dramatized), and a flashback to Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address are all extraneous.

Still, I liked the film quite a bit, and whenever it focuses on Lincoln's political machinations, it is masterful.

Went without wifi for a few days this week.

I watched BN the night before it went out. Not sure what I was expectin' from the movie, but it just didn't work for me. It was a nice surprise to see Jack Nicholson in a small, uncredited role, but other than that, it was kinda predictable. The hardworkin' but unattractive guy gets the shaft while the good lookin' idiot fails upwards...

I finished out the seventh season of Homicide: Life on the Street on DVD, includin' the third of the three Law & Order crossover episodes and the post-final movie, which I've seen before.

And I played Batman Arkham Asylum on the XBox a lot, too.

And when the wifi came back on yesterday, I found a new MST3K to watch. In this, the movie is about a deputy sheriff from the Texas / Mexico border tasked with escortin' an Italian criminal back to Italy, and then havin' to chase him when he escapes after an emergency landin' in Malta. Mike & the robots rip on Joe Don Baker, who plays the deputy sheriff, throughout, too.
