Pierce Brosnan's first and best entry in the James Bond series. When this came out it must have seemed like we were on the verge of a new golden age for the character, but his subsequent films never really lived up to the promise of this installment, even if they had their strengths. But this is about as good as the fun Bond movies get, with numerous classic setpieces, and arguably the most memorable main villain. It's been quite a few years since I'd seen this, so it was enjoyable to reacquaint myself with it.

I had never seen this Disney animated film before so took a chance and did a blind buy over last Black Friday. It was 1/2 off so I got it for $12 which is a big discount for the Disney animated fare. The way Disney does their 'vault' I figured best to get it just in case. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Eddie Murphy in the role of Mulan's sidekick Mushu was enjoyable. Hints of Murphy as Donkey from Shrek are hidden inside his performance as Mushu. The main story of Mulan going in her fathers place to represent the family as China is set to battle the Hun was well done imo. Really good film.
I thought I saw both Mulan movies on Netflix awhile back...I may check 'em out at some point, since I haven't watched 'em yet, either.

Went into work super early yesterday & did a double feature.
First up, John Dies at the End, the new movie from the guy who directed one of my favorite dumb movies, Bubba Ho Tep. There were a few too many dick jokes, but overall, I enjoyed this one, too. It was quite a bit of fun.
Followed that up with my first viewin' of the classic MGM musical, Singin' in the Rain. I though that Broadway melody, 'Gotta Dance' went on way too freakin' long, but other than that, I liked it. Find it hard to believe that my mother didn't have me watchin' this one when I was a kid...she loved a good musical. And it reminded me a bit of last year's The Artist, which was set in the same era, when silent films transitioned to "talkies".
Got a plan to see The Terminator tonight, which I've seen, as well as an '80s rock movie, Get Crazy, which I haven't.

28. Cougars Inc. (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - A crafty high school kid uses his friends to set up an escort service that caters to older women so that he can pay for his private school tuition. Stars Kyle Gallner, Denise Richards and James Belushi. The promotional material is deceptive because it makes it look like this is a Denise Richards movie, but they're just using her to sell this thing. I didn't like that, but I did like the movie quite a bit. It starts slow and looks bad, but it gets better. It's got a lot of heart and it's not entirely formulaic.
29. Tasmanian Devils (✩) - Live TV - A bunch of adventurers are being chased through the woods of B.C., Tasmania by some monsters. Stars Danica McKellar and the usual Stargate/BSG/Vancouver crowd. It's a terrible movie, but I love Danica McKellar, so I was wiling to sit through it while at the computer. I was also surprised at how many notable Vancouver stars were willing to do this thing. It's a paycheck I guess.
30. Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome (✩✩✩½) - Blu-ray - Finally saw this web series as a movie on blu-ray. I wanted to wait and fully enjoy the visual spectacle. I talk more about it here, but in short, it was visually impressive but had a weak story. I don't think this would have been a successful series.

The Peter Jackson film about a 14yr old girl named Susie Salmon(Saorise Ronan) killed by her neighbor, Mr.Harvey(Stanley Tucci) and how her father(Mark Walberg), her mother(Rachel Weisz) grandmother(Susan Sarandon) and sister(Rose McIver) all cope and deal with this tragic event.
I had to go to IMDB to get the names of both the Salmon daughters as they were new to me. I felt both young ladies gave solid performances in a cast that was full of strong performances frankly. It may be due to some limited screen time but they out shined Sarandon frankly and that's not to diss her performance at all.
I felt the movie was perhaps a bit long. The time spent in the "in between" where Susie essentially is united with the other dead girls Mr.Harvey killed slows the pace of the movie I felt. I also wasn't fully sold on keeping the side high school male love interest as part of the story once Susie died, nor the raven haired girl who lived at "the pit". If her connection to Susie had led to her stopping Harvey from dumping the safe into the pit then having those two around would've clicked more as they served a major purpose in the finale of the film. So editing some if not all of them out from the remainder could've helped along with editing down the "in between".
Still a good film with visuals of the "in between" reminding me a bit of what I saw in the trailers for Life of Pi(which I've not seen). Was a bit surprised to see it's critic and audience RT score as rotten. I don't recall the sentiment at the time on this film so I guess that's why I was surprised.

The newly-crowned Best Picture of 2012. I rewatched it a few days ago, and it more or less confirmed my opinion from the first viewing in theatres: it's a very well-made film, and while it wouldn't have been my choice, it will age well and won't prove an embarassment for the Academy. The cast is very low-key, but pleasantly won the SAG Ensemble Award, which is just the sort of thing that a movie that doesn't go for standout individual performances should be in contention for. The ending is openly admitted as a dramatic device, but so what? I'd still rate Gone Baby, Gone as Affleck's best work so far, but this is close to that level.

Ah, the 1960s, when everyone was sticking it to The Man. This became one of Paul Newman's defining roles, and supplied pop culture with the oft-repeated "failure to communicate" line, but in retrospect I don't think it's an especially great movie, though it isn't bad either. The scene between Luke and his mother is terrific, though.

31. The Promotion (✩✩) - DVD - Two guys have their sights set on a prmomotion at a grocery store chain. Stars John C. Reilly and the guy who played Stifler. The premise sounds good and it appears to have the right actors, but the movie is bad. It tries to be your usual comedy but it misses the mark big time. I was wondering why I never heard of this movie and now I know why.
32. Barney's Version (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A man's life story involving three marriages and a killing. Stars Paul Giamatti and an all-star cast including Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman, Bruce Greenwood, Scott Speedman and Saul Rubinek. It's a Canadian film that takes place largely in Montreal. Rachelle Lefevre also has a small role in the film. I'm mentioning this because she's the reason I got wind of this movie. Needing time to shoot this is what supposedly got her fired from the Twilight movies. Anyway, the story starts off slow and unengaging, but sweeps you away eventually, leaving you thinking that you've watched a pretty decent movie.
33. The Best and the Brightest (✩✩½) - Download - Stars Neil Patrick Harris and Bonnie Somerville. This is a weird movie. I thought it was going to be about a young couple trying to get their kid into a prestigious school, but it totally tuned into something else. In that regard it fails. It could have been a good story and commentary about the cutthroat mentality of today's overbearing parents and how they compete through their kids, but we didn't get that. What it became was somewhat entertaining though. Christopher McDonald and Kate Mulgrew play a high society couple and they seriously ham it up big time with some mild and not so mild raunch.
34. Upside Down (✩✩✩✩) - Download - It's a love story and commentary on the class system set in a fictitious world that has dual gravity. Watch the trailer if that doesn't make any sense.
I got this after reading Starbreaker's post. I like Kirsten Dunst and was totally intrigued by the concept. It's something scifi fans should watch just for the concept and visual spectacle. Unfortunately, what this world is and how it works are poorly explained and I found myself trying to figure it all out. Was this two planets stuck in close proximity? Where does the sun come from? I didn't know. It also has a lot of physical laws that are only there to serve the plot. In the end though, it's fantasy, not science, so just sit back and enjoy the sights and the wonderful soundtrack.

Went over to the Ritz Tuesday night for the one & only showin' of this month's "man crush" movie, <i>Benny & Joon</i>.
It was cute, I enjoyed it.
Watched a Louis C.K. standup special and a documentary about ventriloquists before I got to my seventy-fifth movie of the year, <i>The Adventures of Tintin</i> (2011), all via Netflix Instant.
I did a three movie marathon yesterday - <i>Beautiful Creatures</i> ('cause it was the last day to see it for free), <i>Snitch</i> ('cause I didn't want to get caught in traffic), and <i>Dark Skies</i> ('cause my friend Maeby wanted to see it).
Out of the three, I'd say that <i>Snitch</i> was the best of 'em, and <i>Beautiful Creatures</i> wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.
My roommate got home just as I did, and she found <i>The Queen</i> on USA, so we watched that before callin' it a night.
A few new movies are comin' up, and I have passes for a screenin' tomorrow mornin'.

If the NRA was looking for movies to cite in its mad quest to divert people's attention from actual guns, this would probably be a good one.
A very well-done film (I especially like how they have Robert Ryan chasing the gang the entire movie, only for them to be all dead when he gets there, which I imagine must have floored audiences at the time, especially), which pushes the limit for how much you can ask the audience to identify with people despite them being objectively horrible people (particularly all the emphasis put on the guys rescuing Angel, who murders a woman in cold blood at one point). There's some quite spectacular practical stunts.

First new to me movie of the month is the latest from Charlie Sheen featurin' Jason Schwartman & Bill Murray.
Its about a guy who gets dumped by his girlfriend & tries to cope with the breakup via support from his buddies and an overactive imagination.
The preshow was full of winning tiger blood epicness, mostly fan dubs & edits of that Diane Sawyer interview Sheen did.
I have passes to see The Croods this mornin', but I don't feel like goin'...I should go, 'cause it doesn't come out for another three weeks, so it'd be worth it. But then what do I do for the next seven hours 'til my shift starts?

The middle child of the Craig movies (so far). I didn't actually see this in theatres; it came out at a period when my film viewing was on the wane, and the reviews didn't particularly motivate me to see it.
For a movie that's under two hours, it has quite a lot going on in its plot, and quite a bit of the elements are intriguing (the stabs at realpolitik, for example, though the movie's idea of South American politics seems a few decades out of date). But it never quite comes together -- as is now widely admitted, the writers' strike has a lot to do with that, but Marc Forster's direction is distracting in much of the movie. The villains aren't really memorable, either; Mr. White, the carryover from the last film, is easily more memorable than the main villains in either of the first two Craig movies.

Found a couple of Jason Statham movies for cheap at Wal-Mart the other night.
Watched Safe first, 'cause the Drafthouse showed the trailer a lot last spring, but didn't show the movie, so I couldn't get to it for free.
I thought it was alright, not a great action movie, but it got the job done. And there is a bit of a twist to the mano y mano fight for the end that was suprisingingly awesome.
Followed that up with The Mechanic, which has the added bonus of includin' Ben Foster as Statham's protoge.
I've liked Ben Foster quite a bit, especially in 3:10 to Yuma.
And here, in a story about a contract killer, he's pretty good, too. I thought it was interestin' how Statham's Arthur did great on his own, but each job goes to hell once he takes on his boss' son.
Nice supportin' turn for Donald Sutherland, too.
Got a plan to head in early to see Jack the Giant Slayer 3D this evenin'...
