55. Surviving My Mother (✩✩✩✩½) - DVD - Caroline Dhavernas is always fun to watch, especially when she plays a sex crazed young woman. The movie is about a lot of things. I liked that but apparently others felt that it was too unfocused and this is why it got a lower score from the public than it did from me.

56. Oblivion (✩✩✩✩) - Theatre - A great piece of scifi. Visually stunning and it had a pretty good story that kept my attention all the way through. In the end, it felt a bit "put together" but it was still a fun ride.

I wasn't really impressed with The Elite as a "team". I'm really only aware of them in a name only manner. Since so much else felt source adherence I'm going to say they likely were 98% spot on as well. Not a group I'd care for even as anti-heroes really. I found the more mature language by the characters and realization of Lois and Clark's home life to be refreshingly "real". The final fight was well done and even though this hasn't been a favorite of mine Warners Animation does a solid job. My Warners animation catch up is about over after a few more.

57. Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam (✩✩✩) - Download - Short and fun, but I didn't like it's simplistic philosophy on being good.

58. Premium Rush (✩✩✩½) - Download - General Zod goes after the new Batman. It was a fun end-of-summer movie.

59. The Pill (✩✩✩✩) - Download - …as in the morning after pill. It's a fun independent movie about sex, relationships and cheating. Anna Chlumsky is in it. She's not the female lead, but she's there and it's nice to see her getting back into acting.

60. The Grey (✩✩✩) - Blu-ray - Liam Neeson & Co. fight angry wolves after their plane goes down in the wilderness. Good job of making the wolves real characters and menacing but I didn't like the ending.

61. Robot & Frank (✩✩✩½) - Download - A charming buddy movie about an aging cat burglar with alzheimer's and a robot his son got to look after him. It's a good look at non-judgemental friendship. Stars Frank Langella, Susan Sarandon, Liv Tyler and James Marsden. It never got a wide release, but it's worth checking out. Lovely soundtrack too.

Seems so obvious when I read that now but I don't recall thinking it or reading it in the reviews at the time. Oliver Twist, of course.

Best of Both Worlds Parts 1&2 - Theater - I went to the Fantom Events showing of Star Trek: TNG Best of Both Worlds Parts 1&2. I thought for sure that I would be the only person in the theater but I was presently wrong. Their was an actual good size crowd, I would say more then 50 people. The night started off with trivia and pictures being shown on screen. Then the presentation started with the new documentary on Best of Both Worlds. Then the episodes, followed by bloopers and out takes from the episodes and it finished with a preview of the release of Season 4 of TNG. I was a bit sad we didn't get an exclusive clip or trailer for Into Darkness but that's okay.

Seeing it again made me realize exactly how great these two episodes were. I often vacillate between which are the best episode of TNG and I think for me that seeing this again has put that to bed, for me for awhile anyway. With everything going on in the episodes you kinds forget about all the character development that actually happens in this episode. Everyone remembers Elizabeth Dennehy from the episode but George Murdock was great as the Admiral. While I liked Jonathan Frakes, I was never really a fan of Riker. However revisiting these episode has given me a new appreciation for his work. I think he really did the heavy lifting in these episodes and he was up to the task.

Got into work early last Saturday, and took in a showin' of Upstream Color, which was a mildly bizarre movie about a woman who is kidnapped, hypnotized, and compelled to ruin her own life before she is released and winds up havin' a relationship with another victim of the same mindbendin' kidnapper.

Gotta say, Cars 2 is now my least favorite Pixar movie.

Went to the Fatham Event's screenin' of TNG 'The Best of Both Worlds', and yes, I'm countin' it since the updated effects, the edits to the end of part one, and feature-length presentation made it a new way to see an old favorite.

I wore my yellow DS9 uniform to the event, and while the theater had a good sized crowd, no one else came in costume. There were a few Trek-themed t-shirts, though.

Watchin' Anonymous via Starz on Demand now...and it kinda sucks.

Best of Both Worlds Parts 1&2 - Theater - I went to the Fantom Events showing of Star Trek: TNG Best of Both Worlds Parts 1&2. I thought for sure that I would be the only person in the theater but I was presently wrong. Their was an actual good size crowd, I would say more then 50 people. The night started off with trivia and pictures being shown on screen. Then the presentation started with the new documentary on Best of Both Worlds. Then the episodes, followed by bloopers and out takes from the episodes and it finished with a preview of the release of Season 4 of TNG. I was a bit sad we didn't get an exclusive clip or trailer for Into Darkness but that's okay.

Seeing it again made me realize exactly how great these two episodes were. I often vacillate between which are the best episode of TNG and I think for me that seeing this again has put that to bed, for me for awhile anyway. With everything going on in the episodes you kinds forget about all the character development that actually happens in this episode. Everyone remembers Elizabeth Dennehy from the episode but George Murdock was great as the Admiral. While I liked Jonathan Frakes, I was never really a fan of Riker. However revisiting these episode has given me a new appreciation for his work. I think he really did the heavy lifting in these episodes and he was up to the task.

Indeed. I saw it in Burbank last night. I think my favorite thing about the experience was when we all (the audience) would laugh or cheer at the "moments" when we always have over the last 22 years. The theater lit up with applause when Data and Worf recapture Locutus and the camera cuts to Riker's smug grin.

Shelby got a few good laughs, as did her interaction with Riker on numerous points.

All in all, a much better experience than the Fantom event I went to last fall for the season 2 preview.

One of the things I noticed last night which I always took for granted is the facial expressions really lit up the screen. Maybe it was the atmosphere of the theater, but a simple scene of Shelby giving Riker the Stink eye after he said "The Borg have the ability to Adapt Commander" was awesome and people reacted to it. I also got a little emotional at the end when Picard, about to drink the tea, put it down and looked out the window.

I've seen this episode so many times, but with the remastering and the theater experience, it really did feel like a feature length film. I'm still not considering buying the special set (I like the original version with the full music intact and the "To be Continued") but it was a great experience.

^Yeah, that was kind of abrupt how they cut out the cliffhanger sting at the end of part one. I'd be fine with the season 3 and 4 sets, but I might get the feature version if the features are decent.

63. Womb (✩✩✩✩) - Download - The copy I had was titled "Clone". Apparently this is what it was titled for the UK release. It's about a young woman who loses her boyfriend and decides to impregnate herself with his clone. Stars Eva Green and Doctor Who's Matt Smith. It's a slow movie with little dialog but it will leave you thinking and looking up discussions to see what others thought. And in doing so, you might find out that you missed a few things. Check it out. It's a nice piece of "what if" scifi drama.

To date the last really great Disney animated musical, in terms of the music, at least (Princess and the Frog and Tangled were both strong films, especially the latter, but musically neither was terribly interesting) -- even the more minor songs are memorable. This is also one of the last movies where Eddie Murphy was funny. I didn't see this one in theatres when it came out (though I remember the music videos that used to aire for the soundtrack airing on TV at the time), but first watched it online some years later. It looks great on Blu-ray.

42. Pitch Perfect (B)

Last year's cult hit film for teens/young people, particularly women (and featuring a poster that was a pretty transparent attempt to rip off Bridesmaids, including the presence of one castmember). The musical sequences are superb, and the film has a winning sense of humour. The main thing holding the film back from being a really great example of the genre is the characters' serious sides, which never really come across as more than perfunctory.

65. Smashed (✩✩✩✩) - Download - A young married teacher battles her drinking problem. Stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul. It's a good movie along the lines of Flight, and Winstead is great in it, but she didn't quite pull off her drunken tirades. Still, check it out. Here's the trailer… Unfortunately, it doesn't do the movie justice and makes it look more like an offbeat comedy, but it's a glimpse.

Finally released on Blu-ray this year for the 20th anniversary. Spielberg's epic story of one man's moral awakening is one of his most impressive works. One difference on this viewing is that, since the last time I saw it (which was probably back in about 2005), I've read Schindler's Ark, the book this was based on, which makes for some interesting comparisons (the "girl in the red coat" is actually something repeatedly emphasized in the book, for instance).
