Batman in the Nolan films has been a secondary character. I agree with that feeling.
He was even more backseat for this film. Long, long stretches with no Batman in a Batman film.
Yeah, and I think why it affected me in this movie other than the others is that the secondary characters didn't give the movie that "batman" feel. For example, in Batman Begins, that was all Christian Bale and his growth into Batman and as origin movies go, it was very very good. Also, we got to meet the other main characters for the first time, who seemed to have a bigger part like Commissioner Gordon, Fox, and Alfred. That continued in Dark Knight, but that had the extra benefit of Heath Ledger just being so very good as the Joker.
In Dark Knight Rises, the main characters were Bane, Blake, and Tate. The characters were grew to love kind of took a back seat and Hardy, while a good actor, is no Heath Ledger. Because of that, I noticed how much of an un-batman movie this felt, even though I still really really enjoyed it.
I've never seen this before, but since a new version is coming out this year, I finally did. It was better than I expected and I was especially impressed by the mutant effects/puppets.

Hotel for Dogs: Ah, family entertainment, where teenage love is never sexual, kids can commit numerous crimes (theft, trespassing, even reckless endangerment) without repercussions, and a teacher and a social worker can afford to live in New York City, as well as buy and operate a hotel that appears to be free. The appeal here is with the animals, not the humans, and sequences that exclude the humans entirely (or simply make them the butt of jokes) are the best the film has to offer. And, Gods, do the Hollywood studios spend considerably less money on visual effects when it comes to this sort of thing? I've seen better looking work on Babylon 5.
Election: Don't be confused by Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon's presence in this movie -- this is a dark, cynical comedy, more so than Alexander Payne's later work. At times, it's surprising that a major studio (Paramount) backed the film, especially since the characters remain so utterly delusional throughout (four of them provide voice over illuminating their inner thoughts, which are often foolish). Even the epilogue, the result of testing and re-shoots, emphasizes this point, especially when it comes to Broderick's character. Visually, however, the movie is rather unappealing. No doubt this is partly the point, but I'd argue that the blandness of Omaha (where most of the film was shot) is to the film's detriment, and Payne doesn't provide the same level of editorial and photographic interest that he would later bring to a film like Sideways.

Had some time to kill yesterday, so I went to the Westgate 11 to see Savages, the latest movie from Oliver Stone.
I enjoyed it quite a bit, except for the narration (a sample of which ya can hear in the trailer) & the endin', which royally pissed me off.
Debatin' on goin' to Weird Wednesday tonight to see SHARK!. And the Alamo will have two new movies this weekend - Klown & The Watch, so I'll be seein' those soon, for sure...

Found the DVD of the special version of Superman II at Wal-Mart for five bucks & picked it up the other night.
Just finished watchin' it for the first time..and I gotta say, I'm disappointed. First, aside from usin' Jor-El (Marlon Brando) in the Fortress of Solitude, there wasn't a whole lot different, and there was some stuff in the "regular" sequel that I liked more than what was shown in this one.
And the endin' turns Superman into a bully who is beatin' up on a guy for no real reason...

Went up to the Drafthouse Village tonight for Class of 1984, one of the movies in the Summer of '82 series. And I wasn't the only employee there, which I thought was pretty funny, considerin' how small the crowd was...
The story was pretty straightforward - an idealistic music teacher takes a job in an inner city school full of criminals and has to take the law into his own hands because the police won't do anything.
Aside from the language & full female nudity, there wasn't much seperatin' this from a bad afterschool special.
But it was pretty cool to see Roddy McDowell and Michael J Fox in the movie.
A Czech comedy film about an old teacher who quits his job and tries to find other work, because he doesn't really want to stay at home with his wife the whole day. It was quite enjoyable.

Watched the two direct-to-DVD sequels for Dracula 2000 this mornin' before comin' into work. Had 'em on a double feature DVD, which made it pretty easy to just get through 'em.
Dracula's burned corpse from the end of the first movie is taken to a New Orleans morgue, where the EMT & coroner/med student decide to keep the body because it is so obviously a vampire, and get together with their friends to resurrect it.
Hijinks ensue.
The second sequel picks up immediately after the first, with the two survivors tracin' Dracula (played by Rutger Hauer) back to Eastern Europe and gettin' involved with the political rebellion of the region and the folks tryin' to fight Dracula's growin' army of vampires.
Very "meh" about both movies, but they did put me over two hundred new to me movies for the year!

Got cut an hour into my shift today, so I went to see The Watch starrin' Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn & Jonah Hill.
Fairly dumb movie that had dialogue & jokes that felt like outtakes that would run durin' the credits...but, it had a nice cameo of R Lee Ermey bein' awesome and Doug Jones played the alien, so that was cool.
Thinkin' about goin' to see TDKR again, since my theater isn't showin' Klown 'til ten tonight...gotta kill time somehow.

I don't have any previous experience with the films of Wes Anderson (the bits and pieces I've seen over the years never interested me that much), but this sounded intriguing and was getting great reviews, so I decided to give it a shot. We've had two very strong blockbusters so far this year, but I think this is my favourite of the eleven 2012 originals I've seen. It's the sort of film that makes you smile the whole way through. The two kids, Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward, are both perfect, with a fine cast of much more famous adults (Bruce Willis has his best role in a good while, giving a very subdued turn; Tilda Swinton is a bit wasted, but it's basically a cameo).

While I don't agree with Michael Moore's politics I at least give him some credit, especially in Capitalism, of not fully letting the House Led Dems of '07-'08 off the hook. Bush compromised on the budgets and bills they passed. Bush gets demonized for compromising(which we are told is a good thing, until Dems are asked to compromise of course) but so many forget who (Pelosi/Reid) made the budgets he signed. Obama(and sadly us) got the economy they set up. So, it's probably a good thing Reid hasn't put up a budget in 3years really! He also didn't let Barney Frank off the hook for reassuring us that Fannie/Freddie were aokay.
While with Sicko his presentation of the narrative, especially in France is misleading. France is documented as one of the highest tax "western nations" and he presents a family who says "no taxes are reasonable". Then there's the whole Cuba trip, don't make me laugh. We can all agree the US healthcare system needs improving but the ACA, or Obamacare, is going to bankrupt us all. This isn't the right solution.
Seven Pounds, with Will Smith, was a rather depressing movie about a man who lost his fiancee in a car wreck. Thereby losing his will to live. After donating a lung to his brother to save his life decided to become a one man organ factory by donating his liver, eyes(Woody Harrelson's blind Ezra) and heart(Rosario Dawson's Emily) to needing individuals. He also gives his house away to a woman with two kids who needs to escape her abusive boyfriend.
A very good film and a perfect ending to Nolan's Batman trilogy (with lots of call backs to stuff from the previous films), but the parts are better than the whole.
Probably my main problem was...
...that it was surprisingly predictable. I think it would have been better if Bane really was what he pretended to be - a revolutionary - instead of him just wanting to blow up the city.
And speaking of Bane: I absolutely loved his voice. It was strange, unexpected, but very fitting.
An adaptation of a play based on Turn of the Screw. It relies 100% on atmosphere to deliver the story instead of jump scares and gore. The acting by the two kids in the movie is fantastic. The only major problem I had was with the character of the housekeeper. She was mostly pointless except when they needed to move the plot along. The movie is good, but I don't quite consider it as one of my favorite horror films.
62. Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III ✭
It's not scary like the first, it's not entertaining like the second. It's not even laughable like the film that came after it. It's just an extremely low budget piece of crap that's wasting space on my computer now. I'm glad this thing didn't ruin Viggo Mortensen's career.
I didn't expect much here, but it was quite enjoyable, mostly because of the good dialogue and performances.
And it's always fun to see (now) old actors when they were young/er.

Independence Day: Sure, it's at times jingoistic and at other times rather dumb (and occasionally, both at once -- witness the President of the United States taking a fighter plane into battle in the finale!), but that doesn't stop the film from being a completely enjoyable blockbuster. It helps that it was made right before the total dominance of computer generated visual effects -- although there's some CGI, and not every shot works, the vast majority are model shots that are a welcome departure from the look of current big-budget films. It also helps that the film never loses its focus on its characters; compared to too many recent films, the emphasis on the human element here is positively refreshing.
Emmerich and Devlin, sadly, only collaborated on one more film (the mediocre period piece The Patriot) before going their separate (and unmemorable) ways. Hopefully, a sequel to this film never gets off the ground -- there's a reason the film bursts into David Arnold's patriotic anthem rather than ponder the reality of radioactive wreckage (some of it quite large) raining down over much of the earth. It's not playing the long game, something a sequel inevitably set over a decade later would be forced to do.
He also didn't let Barney Frank off the hook for reassuring us that Fannie/Freddie were aokay.
