Movies Seen in 2012

I have a special affection for Independence Day because it was the first movie I ever owned. I got on VHS for my ninth birthday in 1996, and must have watched it about 50 times.

I think it also have maintained a following compared to many of Emmerich's later films because his bag of tricks was fairly new at that point.
 
It helps that the protagonists are likeable (unlike Matthew Broderick and Maria Pitillo in Gozilla, a film I wisely forgot about until now) and that the movie never forgets to have a sense of humor about itself (unlike the crippling seriousness, for the most part, of 2012 and what I've seen of The Day After Tomorrow).

And, again, I can't stress the importance of practical effects enough versus the unimpressive and at times unbelievable CGI in Emmerich's last two disaster pics.

Of course, nostalgia also plays a factor for me, since I first saw the movie (in theatres) when I was eight. For a while there I was convinced it was the best movie ever made. :guffaw:
 
I liked The Day After Tomorrow, as I recall, even with all its B-movie science and cheap political caricatures.

Independence Day was my favourite movie for a year or two there, as well.

Spent most of the day watchin' the Brad Pitt/Casey Affleck western today. Almost three hours long, and its all there, too. Even after Jesse James dies, it goes on for another half hour, tellin' what happened to the body & the story up to the murder of Robert Ford.

Went over to Alamo Slaughter last night for the one show of "Klown", the foreign comedy based on the Dutch series of the same name. As far as I can tell, from the limited viewin' of a few "best of" episodes a couple of weeks ago, the main cast of the series makes the transition to the movie.

The movie has male & female nudity, a few disturbin' situations, all kinds of insanity. And it was pretty funny, in a very disturbin' way.

Batman Begins: I imagine this will remain the definitive cinematic origin story of Batman for several years. Really, the only flaws are a forgettable performance by Katie Holmes (though not the crippling performance I had remembered) and the silly comic book science of the finale, which undermines the film's attempt at semi-realism. I'm not crazy about the Hans Zimmer/James Newton Howard score, but it's passable, and it's not as if Danny Elfman's talents would have been at all right of the film tonally.

The Dark Knight Rises: The last forty minutes really make it hard not to laugh in the face of the New York City battle that closes The Avengers. This is a solid conclusion to the series, and it ranks among the short list of satisfying second sequels. Thematically, it didn't seem to have the same through-line of either of its predecessors (Batman Begins dealt with fear; The Dark Knight dealt with the conflict of chaos and order), but the film still worked pretty well. Bane was an effective villain, though not as memorable as the Joker. For the third time in the series, the last act revolves around a piece of silly sf hardware, but that has become par for the course. Selena Kyle's pursuit of the identity wiping McGuffin was a bit expository, but ultimately a minor part of the movie. The two parts of the plot that were the hardest to swallow come back to back: Bane gets away with obvious fraud against Bruce (should this be that hard to prove?) and then Matthew Modine's character abandons his chase of someone who has just murdered several people and diverts the entirety of his force after Batman instead. Really?

Winnie the Pooh: This hand-animated Disney film from 2011 is probably the studio's best non-Pixar effort in over a decade. The interaction between the animals and the narrator of the children's book (and the children's book itself) is downright inventive.

I moved this one up the Netflix queue after Ant-Man got the greenlight. I enjoyed Shaun of the Dead and was not impressed with Scott Pilgrim so I felt it time to see Hot Fuzz. Tip the scales one way or the other on him.

Scales are tipped in a favorable way as I did enjoy this film. Simon Pegg is also fun to watch in the role. Some of the transition edits are a bit much for me but overall I found this to be a well written film. Timothy Dalton as one of the leading contingent of bad guys and glorified cameo's by the London chief played by Bill Nighy were icing on the cake in the casting department.

Couldn't sleep last night, so I wound up watchin' The Watcher instead.

A cat & mouse serial killer thriller set in Chicago with James Spader & Keanu Reeves...it only cost four bucks at Wal-Mart & has James Spader, so it isn't all bad.

And there isn't a dumb ass twist like the killer is all in the investigator's head or anything, which is nice...I kinda thought for a bit that it could happen.

The movie came out in 2000 and the DVD is so old, it lists "production notes" and the trailer as special features.

Anyway, first new to me movie of August! And the 205th movie of the year!

Watched this a day or two ago, but forgot to review it until now. I believe this was my first Scorsese film, back in 2004. It holds up pretty well, albeit with some flaws. In particular, it suffers from the disappearance of Cate Blanchett at the halfway point; to the extent that anyone really takes Hepburn's place, it's Kate Beckinsale's Ava Gardner, who simply doesn't measure up (not a slight to Beckinsale; there's not much on the page to begin with). The antagonists also flit in and out (Alan Alda's nomination for supporting actor is a bit hard to fathom; not that he's bad, but there's not much to the role). But DiCaprio's lead performance is superb, and Blanchett fully deserved her win.

A very well done film that is much better than it's RT score is going to indicate cause it's being sandbagged due to critics not getting an early screening. A well made summer action film with nice set pieces and action scenes.
Kate Beckinsale is the stand out character in this easily. Watching her play a straight up bad ass villain was lots of fun.

Went into downtown tonight to see Stephen King's Silver Bullet on the big screen at the Drafthouse Ritz.

Considerin' its a mid-'80s film, it wasn't too bad in the effects/make up department. And quite a few familiar faces throughout the cast, only younger than ya might remember 'em.

Kind of bummed that the identity of the werewolf was so obviously telegraphed, first in a mob scene & then later through a dream sequence.

Still, worth seein' at least once.

Got a plan to see TDKR again tomorrow with a friend of mine, hope she doesn't cancel on me again. If she does, she's on her own to see it.

Sleeper: Woody Allen's sf comedy demonstrates the co-writer/director/actor's strengths and weaknesses rather well. His attempts at slapstick in the film are hit or miss; some moments are great (the robot repair shop sequence; the constantly failing police rocket launcher), but others fall flat (especially when he's imitating Benny Hill). His dialogue (co-written by Marshall Brickman, who wrote with Allen several times) however, is excellent, and consistently hilarious ("What's it like to be dead for 200 hundred years?"/"It's like spending a weekend in Beverly Hills.").

94. The Wild One

I guess this film had more of an impact during the time it was released, but for me it was just a good film (with a very good performance by Brando).


95. The Losers

This had all the right ingredients for a fun action film, but it seemed to lack... I don't know what really. It wasn't long anyway, but maybe it should have been even faster paced (with a few less slow motion shots, for instance).

Highly enjoyable indie comedy. One can guess the basic outline of the story pretty much immediately (which is usually true with films, especially with comedies, admittedly), but it feels fresh and different from what you'd normally see. The leads are Parks and Rec's Aubrey Plaza and actor/writer/director (though the latter two not for this movie) Mark Duplass, with New Girl's Jake Johnson in a supporting role. Plaza's lead is more than a bit like a more realistic April. Affecting in places, and never less than pleasant; rather like Parks and Rec, actually.

Found the '70s scifi film for cheap at Wal-Mart the other day, and since I had just been thinkin' of it for some reason or another, I picked it up.

Never seen it before, had no idea it was filmed in D/FW 'til I saw the water garden. My mother took me there when I was a kid...

Not a bad movie, either. Glad I watched it, and I'm curious about how the remake will work compared to this one.

Still fun but I bit more cheesy than I recall, been over 10yrs since I saw it. Arnold still delivers a great one-liner but the plot about restoring the Martian atmosphere kinda drags out a bit. You can really tell the f/x which were high tech for the time are easy to spot on BluRay with a big screen. Still, like I said, fun movie all the same.
