Movies on BluRay: Worth it?

I will recieve delivery of the TNG movies on Blu-ray today. I hope they look as good as the TOS set:)

On the whole, I think they look better. This is likely because they're newer films in general. Of the four, I thought 'Insurrection' looks the worst, but 'First Contact' and 'Nemesis' are quite nice.

I watched Generations and I thought it looked great. Three more to go, yay!

The TNG movies and (obviously) Star Trek XI all looked terrific on Blu-Ray to me, so I'd recommend it. You'll get more out of them if you have a fancy HDTV, though.

I sometimes wonder if I'm actually watching the same discs as some of the posters not only here, but elsewhere on the net! The difference is like chalk and cheese - NO-ONE should hesitate picking these films up on BD based on user feedback casting doubt on the worthiness of the AV transfer/upgrade.

I'm sorry, I'll have to be frank here - the DVD's LOOK SHIT on a large 1080p display (anything from 40-42" and upwards) - go above 50" and it's a case of UGH. Without wishing to be boastful, I have one of the best optic disc players on the market, with pretty much the finest scaler available in the home - and the majority of DVD's STILL LOOK SHIT.

I only own the new movie on DVD. I bet it looks better than any of the others on Blu-ray?

The 2009 'Star Trek' is demo material. It is without a doubt, one of the finest looking and sounding blu-rays I've come across - of any movie, not just of the 'Star Trek' films.

The bluray prints of the movies are balls, IMHO, except for the new one, which was a proper scan of the cinema release. I prefer to have the original color timing, and no weird upscaling artifacts, but if you're not a picky asshole like me, you'll probably enjoy them.

I'm of a different mind about it. I have Star Trek (2009) of course, on Blu-ray, and am upgrading one at a time. I started by picking up Star Trek 2 because it's my all-time favorite. It really looks and sounds phenomenal on my 50" and 5.1 surround.

I am holding off upgrading TMP, because I have the Director's Edition DVD with the remastered effects that I think Eden FX did a few years back. That version already looks pretty good and I prefer how it makes the movie look like a finished film. Until a Blu-ray version comes out that features such improvements, I'll wait.

As far as other titles go, I also have First Contact on DVD, and I wanted to upgrade to blu-ray, but honestly the transfer looks very inconsistent to me. Some shots look amazing, but others look no better than upconverted DVD. So, I'm probably gonna complete the Spock Lives trilogy when they go bargain basement (I paid $9 for Star Trek 2).

I'm late to the BluRay party but I have a question. Has anyone gotten the BD-Live feature to work. My player is connected to the internet (high speed) but the disc says I'm not connected. I checked the site recommended in the box set but all I get there is movie trailers and info.

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Is it even worth it?

Thanks

PS the blu rays DO look amazing

From my point of view, BD Live is a slow resource hog that works intermittently at best. Oftentimes, the BDLive features only have context during a very specific window of time, for example a Director live chat the week the Blu-Ray is released. What if you don't buy it the first week? You don't get to participate in the live chat.

BD Live is a good idea that hasn't found a good application yet. And it may never find one, but to me, it should have if it was going to be a killer app, so to speak.

Man, most movies i buy are VHS tapes from goodwill. they are 50 cents or so. all this fumble and bumbulling about DVD and blue rays are making my head spin. as long as its a good story its fine with me.

That being said i got a present, a box set of Deep Space DVDS and WOW they look amazing! The images are SO clear, im not sure if it has anything to do with my new HD intigrated tv or those fancy cables that have more than red yello and white, but WOW its looks so much better than my old TAPES!

So to me DVD looks a million times better than tape. So Blue rays are like the same thing just more better i guess. DVD is my expensive kind of movie. I dont need 3 formats for stuff. I am poor. A am a line cook. But i am happy all yous like them alot. I just cant understand how they are "so much better" or something to that effect. DVDs are awesome!

BD-Live has consistently been proclaimed the weakest Blu-ray feature/functionality amongst AV enthusiasts. It really is somewhat lame and poorly executed - and as Irishman has already stated, it just hasn't been applied with any real thought. At this point, I wouldn't worry about missing out.

I intentionally do not connect my Blu-Ray player to my network, despite there being access to an ethenet switch nearby (I have my receiver connected to the internet as well as the HTPC on the same shelf). I've found that all connecting to the internet gets you is forced download of trailers in high def that you have to watch before the movie begins. There is no need to update firmware unless you physically can't watch a disc.

On a related note, I am absolutely disgusted that the studios release discs for rental (ie, Netflix) where you cannot skip trailers. I have to sit there and watch the trailers or fast forward through them if they'll let me. I was under the impression that the feature to force a scene to play without fastforward/skip was intended solely for those FBI warnings, but studios figured out that you can use the same flags to force you to watch trailers.

I typically don't have this problem if I buy the disc, so it may just be a rental thing. AnyDVDHD/MakeMKV to the rescue!

On the UK sell through release of Source Code you not only have to watch forced trailers, but three forced advertisements - e.g. Mars bars (chocolate bar in the UK)!

Yes, AnyDVD HD is an awesome piece of software. I have MakeMKV, but don't use it as my media tank supports BD ISO.

thanks for the replies. looks like I should just watch the flick and not worry about BDL.

My only complaint about the BR set is that we get the theatrical version of "the motion picture" not the 2000 "directors edition" which was superior, IMHO

Maybe one day maybe not we will seee. Since i have all my favs on tape and alot also on DVD i think this is far as i will go til the next gen is in the dollar bin at goodwill.

Im poor as hell and need more education to make more money!

But as for now, blue rays and good old HD DVD s are way too much dollars for me!

But no tapes are totallly different. They are tapes. both DVDS are blue rays are the same little circle thing. so i dont get the dif. MY DEEP SPACE looks HD and thats a regular DVD. It cannot get much better than than that! :scream:
