Movie/TV Double-Dip Buys

It occurred to me as I was buying my umpteenth version of the StarGate movie that I've bought more versions of this movie than any other, and I wonder how many others have bought multiple versions of the same title?

So my question to you ... Which movie or TV series have you bought the most times *for yourself* on different formats?

StarGate - I have all four versions that were released on VHS ... The theatrical, two extended editions (each has deleted scenes - but not the same scenes!) and one that came with a book. I have the original DVD, the flipper - remember those? You only got half the movie on one side. Just over halfway through the film, you had to take the DVD out, flip it over, and then start it up again. Then the first version with the whole movie on one side ... then the director's cut/special edition, and the ... what was it, 10th anniversary version? Oh, and of course none of these have ALL of the deleted scenes that were on the various VHS versions, so there is more footage out there.

Before I even had a Blu-Ray player, I bought the movie on BR in the three dollar bin at Wal-Mart. And now I have the 15th anniversary Blu-Ray uber edition. It'll go on the shelf next to the DivX disc. DivX ... who thought that was a good idea? Anyway ... I think the only format I haven't gotten it in is UMD.

I generally will upgrade to Blu-ray films and TV shows that I like and watch frequently, although I have passed on more than a few occasions if the value-added bonus features don't add up to the DVD original. (For example, the recent bare-bones Blu-ray release of Brazil, the second Resident Evil movie which omitted a blooper reel I enjoyed on the DVD, etc.)

As far as "bare bones" vs. "special edition" releases, again it depends on whether it's a movie I enjoy and whether I'm interested in the value added content. I bought Deathly Hallows Part 2 last month, but I will double-dip and buy the "Ultimate Edition" release with the extra book, documentary and other stuff when it eventually comes out. But I can tell now when a release is going to be bare bones now, with the "uber" edition later. I ignored the first Blu-ray release of Avatar because I knew the bigger set was coming. Likewise I knew in advance that Doctor Who Series 6 Part I and Part II were going to be issued later in a box set with extra stuff, so I was patient and waited - no double-dipping necessary.

Some folks complain about double-dipping, but often it's just a case of not doing consumer research. If a big movie comes out and the BD (or DVD) has little more than a commentary in the extras, then you should know a few months down the line the box set will be coming.

The Lord of the Rings is in a class by itself for that I think. I had the theatrical editions on DVD, plus a fullscreen of the first movie I bought by accident, and then bought them again on Blu-ray, and then also bought the extended editions when they were released on Blu-ray.

There are a few movies I have owned on VHS - DVD - and Blu-ray, Star Trek: Generations and Ghostbusters come to mind.

My very first experience with double dipping was the Dune miniseries. I bought the extended cut about a year after I bought the bare bones DVDs.

I have updated several DVDs to Blu-ray:

The Prestige
28 Days Later
The Descent
Lord of the Rings
Star Wars
Frailty
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Star Trek: First Contact (VHS to Blu)

For Star Wars (The original trilogy) I've bought...

The original VHS releases
The Widescreen VHS releases
The Definitive Edition Laserdisc Boxed set.
The Special Editions VHS set
The Special Edition Laserdisc set
The original DVD release
The second DVD release (with original cuts)
Blu-ray release.

I've done it a few times, but typically I give the bare bones edition to a friend or one of my brothers, so I never let them go to waste.

Off the top of my head; the Alien movies (bought all individually then got the Quadrilogy when it came out some years later) same thing with the Matrix films. I bought two versions of Hellboy (SE & Director's Cut) the latter when I spotted it going cheep in the shops. I bought the bare bones version of Avatar knowing full well that a SE was on the way and got that too just because I wanted to watch it again asap (did the same thing with all three LoTR films.) I've also got two or three different versions of Dune knocking around as well as two versions of Leon and Dogma of all things.

As for VHS/DVD double dips...well, the Alien films again (so that counts as three times each) all of the Star Trek movies up until First Contact. Some of them I had on VHS twice (TWoK, TSFS, TVH & TUC IIRC) as I got that 30th anniversary box set when it came out. I still have two versions of the original Star Wars Trilogy on VHS; the '97 SE and the "remastered" set that came out some years before (this one I think.) I had some 80's copies too way back when though I have no idea what I did with them.

Some other random films I I got twice include Stargate (yes, me too!) Shawshank Redemption, Terminator 2, The Fifth Element, Ghost in the Shell and DS9 season 6 & 7 (the VHS versions of which are up in the attic as I can't be bothered to eBay them.)

...Daigon help me if I ever upgrade to Bluray!

Firefly - DVD and Blu-Ray
Farscape - old DVDs and the newer DVD boxset (which I bought right before the damn Blu-Rays were announced!)
Battlestar Galactica - DVD and Blu-Ray

I've bought some of the Trek films three times. I bought most of the original single disc DVD editions, then the later two disc SE's of all ten movies, then the later single disc boxsets they released around the time of the Abrams movie (which I also bought twice, both DVD and Bluray). And of course I had them on VHS back in the day.

I've re-bought some DVDs because the originals weren't widescreen, or were only letterboxed (not enhanced for 16x9). Some of my Bluray upgrades are the same, movies like 2010 and Don Juan Demarco never got 16x9 transfers so I'll gladly buy those on Bluray.

I had to rebuy the theatrical cut of Fellowship of the Ring on DVD because my first one developed a glitch where it would skip just after the Fellowship leaves the Elf home. I bought a used copy very cheaply, but I just played it the other day on my widescreen set and it looks like crap. I know Bluray is better, but I've got older DVDs that look way better. I wonder if I got another flawed disc?

I think I double-dipped on Stargate also: my first copy was the non 16x9 version that came free with the player, and I upgraded to a 16x9 version after a while. Also upgraded Dune (was especially glad to get the extended cut on DVD, in addition to the 16x9 version of the theatrical cut).

Farscape - old DVDs and the newer DVD boxset (which I bought right before the damn Blu-Rays were announced!)

I've seen side-by-side comparisons, and Blu-Ray adds nothing to Farscape. Doesn't look any crisper (and actually looks a little worse in a few places). There are no additional features on the discs, either, so don't fret.

Yeah, I kind of figured that would be the case. The way it was filmed, I would imagine only Season 4 might have improved visuals.

I just love me some Farscape.

I rarely re-buy something if I already have it. I tend to wait for Special Editions.

But the odd ones I've upgraded to Blu-ray from DVD

Heroes S1. It cost me less to buy all 4 seasons on Blu-ray, than it would have to buy the remaing 3 seasons on DVD

BSG (2004) S2. After buying that season, I waited till the Blu-ray box set came out.

Star Wars complete

I'll also end up double dipping on SG:A S1-2 when the box set comes down to a reasonable price.

I'll double dip big epic movies like Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

But I won't bother replacing my dvds of kids movies or dramas with blu-ray. Way too expensive for that.

Nice profile pic.

For me, Star Trek is the ultimate culprit here when it comes to multiple double-dipping across the board.

I've also upgraded to special editions for Casablanca, Pulp Fiction, True Romance, Spider-Man 2.1, Transformers (1986), Transformers (2007), a better Criterion copy of Yojimbo, etc. over the years so the GREEDY STUDIOS definitely know what they are doing.

And, we keep falling for it each and every time! :borg:

I will quite happily double-dip any time a DVD I have comes out on Blu-Ray. As soon as that happens I ditch the DVD (usually give it away) and get the BR. I don't care what title it is.

I'm gradually converting my Star Trek library from VHS to DVD. By the time I get around to investigating this whole "Blu-Ray" thing, they'll probably have invented something new.

And I recently broke down and bought Dracula's Daughter on DVD even though I already have it on VHS. It was on sale.

My biggest DD was getting the Remastered TOS season sets.

I've also on (rare) occasions upgraded from the 1 discer to the 2 discer, the last time I recall doing that was for Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles.

Biggest DD for me will always be Star Wars. I bought two versions of the OT on VHS and two versions of the OT on DVD and one saga in Blu-Ray. I don't regret it though.

The only thing I've ever double dipped on was Firefly. I bought my first DVD set the day it came out, and after watching (and re-watching) it, I loaned it out to a several people. One day Target had it on sale for $20, so I picked up a second copy for my own use so I could have a loaner set where I didn't really care if something happened to it.
My DVD player is still going strong so I haven't upgraded to Blu-Ray yet, but I'm sure I'll be double dipping on Trek and Star Wars when the time comes.

I replaced about 40% of my VHS anime Collection, it would be a larger percent but some stuff is just WAY too hard to get, if you can at all

as it stands i have the original Robotech Macross saga, Robotech remastered, SDF Macross and the other week I saw they had the first Robotech war (released by A&E for some reason) basically the Macross saga for $15 at wal-mart
