Move Along Home - Unfairly derided?

Out of early DS9 its not as bad as the one where Jadzia says "Romance is a nuisance" to Julian to in the most stiff badly acted manner possible.

I've always liked this episode. I like the beginning where they get all dressed up for a famed "first contact" only to have their expectations subverted. The aliens are just like "that's fine. Where's the casino?"

And we get to know quark really well. We learn he has a conscience.

I also like how Kira has no patience for Star Trek weirdness. We see Starfleet get caught in these weird anomalies all the time, but Kira just gets pissed. It's also a nice touch to see Kira get self-conscious.

Easily underrated.

Yeah, the Wodi seem fly by night as a come and go one-off or even filler. A filler species with great tailors whose outfits would be given justice if remastered in HD. But I wanted to know more about them, especially this amazing game that puts people into the ultimate VR on the inside, with outside players controlling their fates with those on the inside not realizing it. That's a bit creepy and I don't recall anything like this having been done before, so it is original.

The ending "it was just a game" being told so nonchalantly is fantastic and just as original.

And it's a great Quark episode for sure, which is why I want to know more about the Wodi, since their game seems to come up at the most perfect time - after Quark's antics. (Maybe the Prophets sent them.) And maybe that's why some people see the episode so highly, taking one subplot (even if it's more a piggyback than a sideplot) and crowning it the best-ever thing.

And as far as filler episodes go, if this is a filler then give me more fillers because real fillers offer or say nothing, "Move Along Home" provides far more than nothing.

And, as said above, there is a TOS-style feel - but at the same time I couldn't see TOS actually doing this episode.

It's a good story, but even with their hiccups the first three DS9 stories are stronger and more tightly written stories.

I fall in the fun episode camp on this one. And the hopscotch scene was hilarious. Sisko's look said, "this is silly, but let's go with it!" Jadzia's look said, "after six lifetimes, this is not the dumbest thing I've ever done." Julian went along with it, and Kira's expression said, " how in the hell did I get roped into this?! "

Horrendous horrible episode. I've had "ellermeraine count to four" in my head for almost my entire life, my own personal sound of drums.

I've always been totally fine with Move Along Home.
...
DS9's first season has some episodes that feel like left-over TNG, but Move Along Home feels like it could just as easily be a TOS ep to me.

Do you like Captive Pursuit?

When I first started watching DS9 this year I'd heard Move Along Home was "A Really Bad Episode" and I braced myself for it. And then after seeing it I thought that if this is as bad as it gets, DS9 is going to be a hell of a lot better than TNG. (and it is...)

Move Along Home is really not THAT bad. It's not a terribly strong episode and there are some corny moments, but it has a lot of strengths too. Like the scene when Quark realizes (or thinks) that if the crew loses the game they'll actually die. Armin Shimmerman really sold that reaction. It's a fine episode. It most certainly should never be lumped together with episodes like Shades of Gray or Code of Honor. Not even the same ballpark.

The only thing I didn't like about this episode was the Hop Scotch scene, but other than that it wasn't "bad". It wasn't "good" either but it was merely decent.

Yeah, the hopscotch bit was different, but not to the alien culture that plays the game on a regular basis. That's what I took from the scene, it's probably meant to make the viewer feel weird.

I don't mind the episode. Definitely not at the top of my worst ep list.

I didn't give it a chance at first because I read online that it was a bad episode/worst episode. After watching it a couple of times I sort of get why people didn't like it, but I don't necessarily agree with those reasons. Though I'm definitely more forgiving of some of its faults because where it is in the shows run. If this episode appeared in season 6 or 7 I'd be with the villagers holding a torch.

I really liked Move Along Home. To the poster who asked about Captive Pursuit I also really enjoyed that episode.

I find DS9 to be particularly remarkable because over the course of 7 seasons there's really only one truly awful episode IMHO (Profit and Lace).
