Most Thrilling Episode of TOS?

Balok's Decoy

I'm curious what you all think is the most thrilling episode of TOS. Like, what has the most exciting plot?

I was thinking about this last night while rewatching Journey to Babel. That episode starts out rather low key, but once you get to the fight scene between Kirk and Thelev, the whole thing just takes off. You've got a saboteur on board, the captain stabbed, a dignitary murdered, Sarek in critical condition, and an unidentified ship firing on the Enterprise. No matter how many times I watch this episode, I still tense up (in a fun way) during the last couple scenes. It's when the Orion ship is making passes across the Enterprise and firing on it, and the Enterprise keeps trying to shoot it, but the ship is too fast. And they cut back and forth between the bridge and the operation in sick bay. There's so much joyful chaos. Uhura reports that the dignitaries are wondering what's going on and Kirk has this amazing line delivery through his pain from the stab wound: "Tell'em to take a good guess but clear that board lieutenant!" Then Thelev is brought to the bridge and has a great interaction with Kirk. We've seen the "turn everything off and play dead" trick before in Balance of Terror, but it's still great to watch it play out. I think Shatner's performance in this episode is fantastic.

Despite TOS's reputation for being "slow" or having "60s pacing," I think episodes like Journey to Babel defy those stereotypes. It's a fun, exciting, absolutely thrilling hour of television. So, what episodes of TOS do you find the most exciting? What episodes still push you to the edge of your seat?

I think "The Doomsday Machine" would rank right up there near the top of the list also "Balance of Terror"
The Doomsday Machine would have to do it for me. I mean watching the transporter pads explode just seconds before the Constellation and Kirk meet their demise and Scotty come flying out of the Jeffries Tube (or whatever that thing is)....doesn't get much more exciting the world of ST than that! :techman:

Here, let me give a musical reply:

Da-da da-da DA-da da-da

(loud trumpets) BA BA BAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!

Da-da da-da DA-da da-da

(Yes, Doomsday Machine)

Anything with music that exciting has to be the most thrilling episode.

I love that Trek invented its own great, original dramatic device, of the other ship being destroyed, oh no our heroes are dead... then it turns out the transporter pulled them out before it happened... and they're in the machinery, but not reconstituted yet! A great SF device, that calls on you to think in a new way about new tech...

The Corbomite Manoeuvre

I like the way that the tension not only builds, but lingers. It was a very well-directed episode. "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield," on the other hand, I give it credit for trying to be different and for wanting to experiment with some of its staging and camera work. But the tension got lost when the ship was set to self-destruct, for example. All of these moving posters of close-ups on eyes ... mouths ... nostrils ... and then, there's the zooming in and out on the Red Alert Light, which was best. There was no way to top that. But, again, TCM seemed to really have a handle on how to present the magnitude of the story's problem and to sustain that sense that it's not just Bailey whose limits are being tested.

That Red Alert zoom stuff doesn't really work anymore. But I really love the self-destruct scene. It's actually the other choice for "most tense" that I would pick, after Journey to Babel. It's a great Kirk scene. The man has incredible nerves.

As I wrote, I like the experimentation involved, with the photography. The power struggle is given lots of weight and it's a bold approach. That kind of stylised dramatisation is perfect for TOS' format. When a series starts standardising every aspect of production, the creativity tends to suffer, somewhat. But even towards the end of its run, TOS kept trying different things out ...

I'd have to go with "Doomsday". Lots of cool stuff going on there. Very tense. I think it's easy to forget, after seeing it so many times, how intense and taught that show was.

Honorable Mentions:
Journey To Babel
Balance of Terror
Where No Man
Day of The Dove
