I am planning to introduce Star Trek to a friend of mine. She has specifically requested romance. Of course, I am a hot mess trying to narrow the list down. Here is what I have so far:

Lessons (TNG)
Captain's Holiday (TNG)
Manhunt (TNG) - not great, but tempting!

You are Cordially Invited (DS9)

Any other suggestions? (I know there are..)

I have to second the VOYAGER episode "Unforgettable." Romance doesn't frequent itself in Chakotay's existence aboard ship ... but when it does, it's notable. Despite its focus being on The Power of Love, it's a strong episode.

Paradise Syndrome, For The World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky. Season 3 TOS might be a good season for this. Any "romance" in later series gets a bit too detached and anti-septic for me.

The whole essentialism of the episode--"Edith Keeler must die"--is a turn off, IMO. I think it works against the notion that there was an effective relationship between Keeler and Kirk.

Isn't that implicit in pretty much any of these romances though? For the most part ST is episodic, so we know from the get-go that these romances will be wrapped up in under an hour.

I would argue that the chemistry between Kirk and Keeler negates the essentialism aspect...and possibly that the essentialism aspect actually enhances the romantic aspect. If you want drama, doomed relationships are the best kind.

It's not that they are going to move on. Kirk must choose to let her die. There's no other way around it, at least as Kirk and Spock understand it.

But doomed romances are still romances, even when larger issues prevent the lovers from living happily ever after.

Remember Casablanca? "The problems of two little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world."

But would we really argue that there was no "effective relationship" between Rick and Ilsa?

And they'll always have Paris . . .

Meanwhile, "All Our Yesterdays" was the first episode that came to mind when I saw this thread.
