most "normal" people don't know KIRK is dead

Sorry folks, but Generation wasn't a big hit. I like the movie, I think it is the best TNG movie, but in reality? Not to many people outside of TREK would have even known he was dead. Ask your moms/dads, if they haven't seen it, or any of your 'normal' friends at school/work? I bet maybe 2 out of 10 will even remember the movie, and that he died in it.

Yes, I know...we are all 'normal' on this board as well. But you know what I mean. I mean 'non' fans. And based on recent STAR TREK tv ratings and movie Box office (or lack there of) I am willing to bet there are far more people who are not fans than who are.

^ My feelings as well.... ^

And the point to the fact that "Most" people don't know older Kirk is dead is ?

Most "normal" people don't care, and aren't going to be any more or less attracted to this film based on Shatner's participation or lack thereof.

RobertScorpio, welcome to the board. TrekBBS is a cool place to hang out.

That said, you should know something. This is now the third "bring back Shatner" thread started in this forum today. That's our limit. Any more will cause a runaway matter-antimatter reaction and we'll all be dead.

Just like Captain Kirk.

And? But? So? Therefore?

If I can guess where you were going with that, I'm going to assume that you think Shatner can be included because John Doe won't know the difference (feel free to correct me on this leap). But, if you think Trek-nation is in a tizzy over a lack of Shat, just wait and see what will happen when there is a living old Kirk for no reason with no explanation as to why he's alive. The interweb would implode!

I think most people actually would notice if Shatner weren't in the movie--of everyone in Star Trek, he is by far the best-known... perhaps because he is so easily mocked, but still.

So, yeah, I'd love to see him in the film. But the film isn't about J.T. Kirk, and I, for one, would rather it not turn into Star Trek XI: The Search for Captain Kirk.

Is Generations really that unknown to people? I remember Shatner and Picard appearing on the cover of Time magazine. I wasn't a Star Trek fan when Generations was released and I remember hearing about Kirk's death.

Yes, he fell 10 ft off a foot bridge in the first TNG movie, any other questions ?

Even if people aren't aware specifically that Kirk was, in canon, killed, I think they'd sort of assume he was dead anyway by the time Spock is a very old man getting on for 150 years after TOS. Remember, we went through all of the Next Gen TV show with that assumption, it was never specifically stated on screen that he'd died - the time gap was just so significant we took it as given, even after we'd seen Spock.

Shatner's not dead, not yet anyway, unless you know something I don't ?

Excellent point. All this movie needs to do is mention how much longer Vulcans live than humans, and it should be easy for the audience to follow the Spock's human friends from his younger years, including Kirk, have since passed away.

I too think the "average" "normal" "whatever" person will see the full cinema and TV trailers, see Nimoy as Spock, and ask where Kirk and Bones, and perhaps Scotty, are. Hell, most moviegoers are probably unaware of the deaths of Kelley and Doohan. They were just not that big on the radar outside their iconic roles (sorry, Kelley and Doohan fans).

Hopefully, well before the movie premeires, the word will be out there that Shatner is not in it (the man himself is already making sure of this!) and people will not go in expecting to see him.

Sir Rhosis

This is all too complex - non-trek people will watch the full trailers and go "that looks cool" and go and watch it or... they will not - that's will be the start and end of it for the majority of people - especially considering that the last trek film with Scotty and the like was 17 years ago - that pre-history for a large chunk of the demographic.

Simple math to the rescue !

TNG takes place 80 years after the events in Star Trek VI, if the first thing the new film shows is a Really Old Spock somewhere after the events of Nemesis.

Kirk even if he were alive would be like McCoy was in Encounter At Far Point, namely a walking rasin, yet FANS seem to want a walking rasin to be in the new film anyways, pretend that Kirk is alive and well in 2407 or whatever year it is, yea, Spock is like old as sin, and Kirk still alive, yup, the average movie goer gonna buy that........

N O T !

I wish people would give it a rest with the Shatner stuff already.
Two of the three threads begun today on this topic were started by RobertScorpio. He's new here, having registered on the 20th. I'm afraid this will happen over and over again with new members that are drawn to the board because of the movie.

We're all tired of the topic. JJ Abrams is REALLY tired of the topic. Unfortunately, it's new to the n00bs. All we can do is welcome them to the board and politely say, this topic has already been exhausted.
