Mortal Kombat Rebirth Short (Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan)

I'll watch Michael Jai White in just about anything...I thought he was great in his small role as one of the mob bosses in "The Dark Knight" and I think he makes a great Jax in this. There still is an air of mystery about this short, it's making the rounds at all the news out lets and no one is quite sure what to make of it. I suspect that we'll hear some kind of news regarding it in a month or so from the kind of buzz that it's generated in just a day. I've watched it three times now and love it every time. I was thinking during the tournament we would hear a computer like voice declare "FATALITY!" or "FINISH IT!" during their fight but that might be too over the top for what they intended. Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade is still throwing me off by how cool the concept is.

Well the original article i posted has been updated with a tweet from Jeri confirming that the short was put together by the director as a pitch to the WB for a re-imagined MK film. Also the actor who plays Johnny Cage has comments that are linked too...

The fact that it had barely any special effects but kept me glued to the screen for 8 minutes already makes it superior to MK2. I'd love to see this as a full fledged film, but the question is how do you show your support for something viral like this when there's no site to even post a comment on that will get noticed?

Interested in seeing the tournament portion of it. Maybe that's when it will fall flat and just become another B Level martial arts flick involving a tournament.

Has there been any news on this?
Edit: Ah, should have read the site again. So it's just a neat promo.

Then again, some professional fight choreographer decided to make his own Street Fighter short and put that on youtube just for kicks so who knows

^ That is my concern regarding the tournament as well...it still has that air of a massive underground martial arts fight though featuring all the best fighters from across the world no matter who they are. I'll really be interested if the film is anything like the short. I'm thinking that this is more like a 'prequel' or prologue for it. Strange. I haven't been this excited about a video game adaption for YEARS but it's that damn good. I really like how they did Barraca's claws and think the next time we see Wolverine they should use effects similar to this.

It was pretty good as an eight minute video, but as a two hour movie I think it would definitely overstay its welcome.

Hmmm, interesting... but I think I'd prefer they kept the supernatural element to the storyline. It seems like they're trying to pull a Batman Begins/Dark Knight realistic approach to the franchise. Personally, that doesn't really appeal to me in this particular case.

Again we have no idea what shape or form this film will take or if it will include the supernatural element along with the mythological aspects of Mortal Kombat. Indeed until today no one was sure what this was for. It's far too early in the process to say it will or won't be traditional Mortal Kombat. It does seem like they're going with the "Batman Begins" route with it and I think the style they showed us was terrific.

I like the potential behind this. I'd prefer they stuck to or invested more into the supernatural aspect of it but he did them well enough as "ordinary" humans I'd still see it.

Don't like it. Don't get me wrong, I like the aesthetic, the griit etc... however, one of the most fun aspects of the MK series is the supernatural element including Outworld. Look at how well the Street Fighter Chun Li movie turned out when they tried to base it in reality; It doesn't work.

If they could keep the look and feel but work the supernatural aspect of the series in, it would be great, otherwise why even call it Mortal Kombat? Is anyone really clamoring for yet another real world fighting tournament movie? Go watch Undisputed if you are!

Just because we didn't get a mention or see the myth and supernatural aspect of the games and first films in this doesn't mean it won't be there in some capacity. Wow.

I have no idea how Hollywood works but it seems like a decent way to make a pitch. Put it online where it can generate buzz and a view count.

Maybe not, but if they are going to include such things in a full feature it's worth putting into the trailer. For its flaws, the first film did a pretty good job of being accurate to the original game. Better than Street Fighter. :p

It's too early to judge, but the trailer seems pretty "meh" to me. It looks a little too much like CSI: Outworld, and as much as I like Jeri Ryan, she wouldn't be my first choice for Sonya Blade. * shrugs *

Right, but based on this trailer, there's no reason to believe the supernatural elements will be present. You can speculate all you want, but all we have to go on right now is this trailer.

That said, I don't like it. I love Mortal Kombat because of the supernatural elements. If they're not present in this movie, then why pretend it's a Mortal Kombat movie at all?

I'd love to see a more serious and updated take on the first Mortal Kombat film. That one was decent, but it could have been so much better.

Jeri Ryan has not aged well.

Poor Seven of Nine, maybe she could use some borg upgrades:borg:

Really? I thought she looked really nice in this short.

As for this short, it was decent. I'll watch the movie if it turned into one. They're doing remakes for just about everything, why not Mortal Combat. Heck, while they're at it, they could do Super Mario Bros. better than when they did it in the 90's.

Jeri Ryan looks great for 42 and I get impression this Sonya Blade is more into weapons than martial arts, although I doubt she or the other actors in this mock trailer will be kept on for the actual movie (if it goes into production).

There's also film rights problems regarding the franchise that need to be resolved...this was just a pitch for the network. Either way I still would watch it. The characters seemed to retain their abilities. I loved the first MK film and played the games when I was a kid and am a fan of the mythology and supernatural elements I just find it a little early to judge from a pitch trailer if they would be included or not and speculation is all we have right now.

The concept is interesting in and of itself, but calling it Mortal Kombat and using the MK characters doesn't make it Mortal Kombat.

Admiral Young, you can talk all you want about us not knowing for sure whether or not the supernatural aspects of the MK franchise will or will not be included if this pitch makes it into production, but, even with the very rudimentary understanding I have of the pitching process, it strikes me as being extremely unlikely that the supernatural elements of the franchise would be included if the pitch trailer is successful in getting a studio to sign off on the project. IOW, if the supernatural elements of the MK franchise were intended to be included in this new take on said franchise, they would've been part of the trailer.
