As for the new chair - is it just me or are the armrests too far apart to be terribly comfortable?
Yes, it looks like Pine has to do some serious leaning and can only rest one arm at a time. They should extend those arms inward slightly maybe.

The leaning I see. But as for space to rest his arms, he has it.

Look closely, all the controls are on the front end of the arms so he
can rest his arms and have the controls at his hands.
The only thing about the new chair that seems weird is the armrests are tilted in. I think I'd rather have them be flat.

Actually, I'm reminded of the Defiant's center seat from DS9 with regard to that feature.

Shit, my cell phone from Verizon looks more advanced than Kirk's old communicator.

You gotta understand that most Trekkies have not an ilking of an ounce of reality in them. To them, reality is not canon. :p

Reality? Last I checked a verizon phone can't call outer fucking space (nor anywhere else without a cell tower pretty damned close).

"Scotty, can you hear me now? Good... now beam us the fuck up!"

I agree with most of you. As much as i like the old chair, although it was the least practical looking part of it, this one is by far the best version to see on the big screen.

This is more faithful than TMPs chair was. although, like this, it had an entirely new production crew, almost.

The soap box chair would look awful to todays audiences.

I think they have done is justice in a faithful way.

But he didn't say it is more advanced, he said it looks more advanced. The whole "It may look like a piece of 60's junk, but it's actually super powerful" argument just doesn't fly with the audience, that's hopefully going to see the movie.

I have but one objection to the new chair: no armrests. If you look at the original, the armrests were stained dark brown, and Kirk could safely rest his arms there without any fear of accidentally leaning on the shipwide intercom, or activating the captain's log while telling Bailey off. This new captain's chair is almost perfect, but it needs safe space for the captain to rest his arms.

I whipped this up quick, it does look like there are "safe" areas on the arm rests.

Bingo, we're talking about visual appearances here. And I actually get pretty good reception on my phone, though I have yet to be able to place a call to the I.S.S.

The I.S.S ??? You are an operative from the mirror universe ?
Traitor :p

I think you've found TOS forum a new motto. ;)

LOL. Thanks. :techman:

Although, i seem to have missquoted Kirk on that one.

That looks pretty close to what i can see. I like the fact that the left arm looks as if it has a physical roller ball interface aswel, kinda like those 3D mouse things for computers, or a 3D ipod, in this instance, a click wheel wont look out of place on this bridge.

Given that Kirk and Pine are right handed, im guessing that the right side interface will have a multi function screen and controls, much like the close ups on TNG era Trek. Or its a cup holder and tray for munchies when he gets bored.

[nods]
I see what you're saying, baxart, but have you ever nodded off with your hand on the mouse and accidentally clicked something you didn't mean to? This new arrangement still has Kirk's hand resting across controls while resting his arms in a neutral position. Anything that causes his hands to twitch could launch an ion pod by accident.

Of course, I only remember Kirk nodding off in his chair once, and he wasn't at his best that day, so ...

^ Someone did a comparison of the captain's chair armrests and control layouts here -- see what you think.
