The bottom line will be the size of the opening weekend. Most movies "die off" in subsequent weeks because of other competing movies. "Wolverine" opens the following week yes? Then Trek B.O will definitely drop off. The bigger the first week gross, the dropoff will be about half or so each following week.

Star Trek has come to be considered nerdy, which is in the undesirable category. The people find out what is desirable by being told in the form of Super Bowl ads, paid plugs by shills on the TV news, Barbie dolls, songs with lyrics such as "I like girls who wear Abercrombie and Fitch," et cetera.

So here's my rap for the new film. I'm modifying the lyrics from "Diesel Power," by Prodigy, which happens to have a red alert klaxon sample integrated with the beat.

People don't have to give a damn about "Star Trek" in order for this film to succeed. It simply has to be a good, entertaining action adventure movie. All indications from virtually everyone who's seen any part of it are that it is.

I am entirely mistaken? That's a bold statement. We'll see who is correct in a few months. Though as I said before, I hope it is better then what I've seen so far. The new action figures look just like what all the kiddies will want too.

I think you're reading too much into my choice of the word "care", in that I mean they will care to go, or be in willing to go see this Star Trek movie.

As for "all indications", if you're talking about the reviews of the makers, and all their friends who have screened the movie, what do you expect them to say publicly? They're not going to say it sucks. It's part of their PR machine to ensure everyone says it's a great movie... You must be old enough to understand this basic marketing technique.

I didn't even know they made a SERENITY Movie till I heard about the DVD coming out (that's how good that ad campaign was).

I liked it enough to buy it, even though it always pisses me off at the end.

the fans, and to their credit they were rabid. (I count myself among the Browncoats )

But as with Trek, it takes much more than the fanbase for something to be a success.

If the film is good it doesn't matter if the younger demographic have previously heard of ST or not. A good film is a good film.

The stigma of Star Trek started after TOS. Now that they're bringing back TOS sort of, the stigma should be lifted.

there was a stigma with tos especially during its original run.
it wasnt until the second movie and tng that it became cool for awhile to like trek.

How could a show have a stigma during it's initial run? And I'm as old as Star Trek. It certainly tried to become cool but just became icy cold. Piller brought some heat back there but no ideas.

What a silly question.

"Star Trek" was just a goofy thing that dorky kids - some of us in the Chess Club and the Science Club and the Science Fiction Society (you get the idea) watched on NBC. It was in no way a cool or popular TV show with the majority of kids.

It wasn't until the early to mid-seventies that the show's so-called "cult following" became cohesive and visible enough to generate any media attention whatever. Offhand, I'd date that to TV Guide's brief coverage of the first New York "Star Trek" convention at the old Commodore Hotel.

But then, I guess I remember that because I'm older than Trek.

Flops are flops, whatever the budget.

I'm hoping Star Trek is a resounding success, but I realize quality of movie is sometimes meaningless to its success.

Hence Serenity. Same genre, following, rabid fans. And Fail. At a lower budget.

This is all just concern, no attempt at being pithy or observant. Just wary.
