A few more pics from yesterday... Putting together a new Prime Enterprise, since I sold the other one. And I had a busy day yesterday; I got Enterprise primed and painted, finally glued Reliant together and painted, and painted my X-Wing and TIE fighter. The lumpy things are asteroids, that will be the bases for them. All of these things are going to be with me at Pensacon in a few weeks. Also in the picture is the finished Armstrong class kit, which I'll be mailing out soon. Not sure when I'll get one of those put together. I'll be painting more tonight. -Ricky
Got some more stuff done... I'm starting to feel pretty comfortable about Pensacon now. Finished my X-Wing: You don't see these two together very often. I finished my display Prime Enterprise tonight too: And last, a simple T800 head that I downloaded from Thingiverse.com: More later. -Ricky
New project.I've started a Chariot Class model for the guys over at Star Trek: Argo (http://baxtert.wix.com/startrekargo). I started modeling the top part of the saucer tonight, and made pretty good progress. I'm having to simplify the model some, so that it will print well. More later.
Very Cool Ricky Also just found this Fan Prod thread posted here on the production> http://www.trekbbs.com/showthread.php?t=264424
Thanks guys. I'm doing things a little different with this one... so far, I've been building each model as one part, and then cutting it up. On this one, I'm going to build and detail each part separately, to see if that's any easier. I'm hoping to get the lifeboats and other details on this tonight. -Ricky
Took a break from the Chariot class tonight, and finished painting the TIE Fighter for my display : Hmm, -Ricky
That would also serve nicely for a different saucer for the Vengeance dreadnaught. Some of the same design cues.
Hmm, it sure would, wouldn't it? I may have to try a model like that! Sorry for the lack of updates... I'm trying to finish all my stuff up for the Con next week. I'll have some pictures of my display soon. -Ricky
Speaking of the Con this week, I have all of my models done. It starts Friday, but I'll be setting up Thursday afternoon. The last 3 models I finished tonight: More later. -Ricky
The way 3D printers make a curve is to layer strips very carefully--but one wonders about the strength of such makes. perfect for the "cortex" of super star destroyers, but... Then I thought about pantographs, and versions of that used in subtractive manufacturing methods. I think this might have been done with the original D-7 kit? The idea of a flying print head popped into my mind when I saw this on the Science Channel http://www.sciencechannel.com/tv-sh...f-science/videos/reach-out-and-touch-someone/. The idea would be similar to the way adaptive optics warp mirrors, with the print head flying over a membrane atop such a grid, so as to smooth it out. Later, I found myself reading Pickover's book on math, especially the concept of Bessel functions. Then this came to mind: http://pinktentacle.com/2006/07/device-uses-waves-to-print-on-water-surface/ So I was wondering if the next phase of 3D printing would be a way to solidify a meniscus and to draw down the liquid as different wave patterns are formed..draining the liquid. So complex shapes might have only one layer. Or would the solidified surface throw off the wave machine? One other thought concept about how to best use standard 3D printing techniques for starships hulls--especially Diane Carey type faceted dreadnaughts. The other mathematical concept known as circumscribing polygons comes to mind: http://www.google.com/search?q=circumscribing+polygons&sa=x&biw=1280&bih=920&tbm=isch&imgil=viutibpjzypwtm%253a%253bjymgo3lrrzvxxm%253bhttp%25253a%25252f%25252farchive.lib.msu.edu%25252fcrcmath%25252fmath%25252fmath%25252fp%25252fp456.htm&source=iu&pf=m&fir=viutibpjzypwtm%253a%252cjymgo3lrrzvxxm%252c_&usg=__u_rvlll8tzs9vhj_knbtjbmvamu%3d&ved=0cduqyjc&ei=uqfyvi_jk4uqyqs9_4l4dq&surl=1 Imagine each different polygon as a different deck layer on a saucer. http://artdesignupdate.biz/1000/1000-sided-polygon.html http://www.hyperballcompany.nl/pagina22aa.html I really like this one http://gluedideas.com/content-colle...ol-8-Steel-Square/Polygons-and-Miters_P1.html
Hi guys. I thought I would post a few pictures here from the con this past weekend. It worked out great for me, I've already got orders to keep me busy for months. I'll be posting pics of an old SHIELD Helicarrier soon, as well as a Lich King helmet from Warcraft. This is what our table looked like: My wife and I were able to meet Colin Baker from Doctor Who while we were there, which was awesome. Even better, is that he had on a Star Trek shirt We got interviewed by the local paper, as well. More pictures and stuff on the Facebook page. Now, I better get to work. -Ricky
Speaking of, I got the bottom of the Chariot class saucer done tonight. I should be starting on the neck / secondary hull tomorrow, but that'll be easy compared to this. More later. -Ricky
More progress... just have the nacelles left, now. I should be printing this thing out before the week is over. -Ricky
Thanks guys. Discovery is one of my favorites, as well. And, it's done. Completely ready to print. Next picture will be a printed part. -Ricky
