Moffat - "you can imagine how much I hate them"

When I agreed to become a mod 10 years ago, the very first thing I realized was that I'd have to care not at all about spoilers. I do appreciate the warning, but honestly... spoilers are no big deal to me. hazards of the job

You must be really really old.

Awww, give Neroon a break ... I've been giving him shit all week.

Time was when age and wisdom were prerequisites for being a mod. Neroon dates from those halcyon days.

How can you possibly say that? If only half the people are watching TV this week, as watched this week last year, then getting twice the percentage you got last year is phenomenal, because you doubled the share, with fewer people available to gain it from.

Then should they put the series on after Midnight where it could pick up a 90% share with a couple of million viewers?
Huh, what does that have to do with anything?

They chose to air it during this specific time of year, and that time. During that spot, there were only "X" amount of viewers to obtain, you can't knock the show for having less viewers, when less viewers are available to obtain, if they get the same percentage or a higher percentage of the Viewers they normally get. If there are fewer veiwers available, that comes down to the scheduling (or changing viewing habits), not attractability of the show

Number 2 is still Number 2, meaning only one show did better

Yeah, as far as profit from numbers (which is irrelevant, since they don't have commercials) you obviously want to get the highest number of viewers. However, if you want to figure out how popular the show was that night, share makes the most sense. You can't be penalized by people who weren't watching TV at all, that just doesn't make sense.

Never really thought about it before, but with the BBC funded by Licensing Fees, what is the major emphasis on getting high ratings in Britain all about?

Certainly not ad dollars.

Any Brits mind filling us Yanks in?

Yeah, and it's been a moving experience. Too bad I didn't have a colonoscopy scheduled....

Dates? Miss, I am married.

(good thing I just picked up a copy of this).

The BBC uses ratings to see if they're spending the license fee on the right programs for its demographic.

If Doctor Who didn't have high ratings, the BBC would probably drop it in favour of something more popular.

Speaking of spoilers affecting the ratings of the show...I was wondering of the people here who are spoiler junkies (like moi) does knowing a spoiler before the episode airs increase or decrease your excitement level and motivation to see that episode? I know for me that it only increases. Even the spoilers that I don't like make me eager to see the episode.

I don't like knowing actual plot details or the name of the person a twist or death is referring to, but, I don't mind the tease of "A death is coming in the first half" or "So and So will guest star", etc, and those kind of minor spoilers (Or teasers as some would call them) make me more anxious to watch the episode, because it allows my mind to go wild with speculation about the teaser.

I think for some people the problem spoilers present, is it gives them the (Sometimes) false impression a show is overly predictable (Well...DUH...You're a spoiler Junkie and know everything in advance, of course, it's predictable for you :guffaw:)

I remember back when Enterprise was on, I had most of the fourth season spoiled. I actually felt like the Doctor bringing along a companion to see it with fresh eyes. I had to have someone else with me just to see if the twists were actually surprising or not.

Please, the amount of flack he has to take like any showrunner gives him the right to voice his opinion, free speech dude. Only uptight people would be offended by such comments, hes not exactly wrong.

There's voicing your opinion and how you voice your opinion. I've no doubt RTD felt the same frustrations but you never saw him making that sort of outburst.

Actually RTD did, on many occasions, complain about people letting spoilers out. He was annoyed how the papers would break storylines ahead of broadcast. Steven Moffat may have been strenuous in his complaint about it but RTD most definitely did complain about it.

Like that Dalek that showed up at the Baftas.
