Yeah the hiatus is from the end of July to the start of Sep sometime. I saw this a few weeks ago on Doctor Who Wiki (not exactly the most reliable of sources I know).

I think a lot will depend on when BBC One decides to run Torchwood, and if it'll be a weekly or they run it more frequently. They usually try to avoid running the two shows in competition. There's nothing saying that Starz and BBC One will air on the same day, though it would be silly not to after the precedent set with DW.
At least it'll be interesting to see how a Fall series will do ratings-wise. I'm getting tired of the weekly 'Ratings were down this week because it was a nice day' line.
Just like it'll be interesting to see if they crack down on revealing information on upcoming episodes.
The ratings have actually been very good, it's just the overnights that look bad, but even then they're not bad when you look at the shares.

Year on year the final figures are down though, while obviously still being better than most other shows on TV.
And there was no sun or bank holidays last weekend and the overnights droppped which pretty much disproves those theories.
Wasn't the final figure on one of them one of the highest since it's been back?

No.
Final Figures for first three, versus first three last year.
The Eleventh Hour 10.08M / The Impossible Astronaut 8.86M
The Beast Below 8.4M / Day of the Moon 7.3M
Victory of the Daleks 8.2M / Curse of the Black Spot 7.85M
I believe the Share was higher, though, on at least 1 if not two of the episodes. And really, the Share is a more true test, since if you have fewer people watching TV, obviously each show will have fewer people watching it.
How can you possibly say that? If only half the people are watching TV this week, as watched this week last year, then getting twice the percentage you got last year is phenomenal, because you doubled the share, with fewer people available to gain it from.I believe the Share was higher, though, on at least 1 if not two of the episodes. Not really. Twelve million and a 30% share is better than six million and a 60% share. I used to have a speadsheet with Ratings / Share / Chart Positions and AI on it but sadly it's no more.
When I agreed to become a mod 10 years ago, the very first thing I realized was that I'd have to care not at all about spoilers. I do appreciate the warning, but honestly... spoilers are no big deal to me. hazards of the job

Then should they put the series on after Midnight where it could pick up a 90% share with a couple of million viewers?

You must be really really old.
You're being deliberately obtuse. If 12m people are watching TV at 6pm and 7m decide to tune in to Doctor Who rather than the 600 other things that are on at that time then it did brilliantly. Much better than say if 24m are watching TV and it could only convince 9m to tune in.

I don't accept that. Audience Share by itself is meaningless. It's share, ratings and chart position combined that measures success.
So Moffat's series' gets two in the Top 10 and three in the Bottom 10 so far.
AI reamains farely constant througout (poor old 'Love & Monsters' excepted) but in terms of Chart Positions I doubt anything will every top Series 4.
