Moffat on Diversity and a Black Doctor

From the 500th DWM:

“We decided that the new companion was going to be non-white, and that was an absolute decision, because we need to do better on that. We just have to. I don’t mean that we’ve done terribly – our guest casts are among the most diverse on television, but I feel as though I could have done better overall.”

I had this baffling idea that if we just threw open each part to everybody, it would all work out in the end. I put my faith, inexplicably, in the free market. It doesn’t work. You can only cast for talent – you’ve got to cast the best person, every single time – but you’ve got to gauge where you’re looking for the talent.

It’s a show that has no excuse. Sometimes the nature of a particular show – historical dramas, for instance – makes diversity more of a challenge, but Doctor Who has absolutely nowhere to hide on this. Young people watching have to know that they’ve a place in the future. That really matters. You have to care profoundly what children’s shows in particular say about where you’re going to be.

And we’ve kind of got to tell a lie: we’ll go back into history and there will be black people where, historically, there wouldn’t have been, and we won’t dwell on that. We’ll say, ‘To hell with it, this is the imaginary, better version of the world. By believing in it, we’ll summon it forth.’ And, outside of the fiction, it’s about anyone feeling that they can be involved in this industry as an actor, a director, a writer… It’s hugely important, and it’s not good when we fail on that. We must do better.

Absolutely it would be refreshing if the next Doctor wasn’t white. Two non-white leads in Doctor Who would be amazing. In fact, a lot of people would barely notice … I certainly don’t think there’s ever been a problem with making the Doctor black, which is why it should happen one day. I mean, we’ve tried. The part has been offered to a black actor. But for various reasons, it didn’t work out.

So was that Patterson Joseph? He's always said the auditioned but didn't get the part.

On the other hand, Europe hasn't historically been quite as lily-white as film and TV have traditionally portrayed it. Thanks to the Roman Empire and its policy of relocating people all over their empire, there were Africans in England as far back as the days of Hadrian's Wall. There weren't very many, but there were some.

Wasn't there a rumour that Chiwetel Ejiofor had been offered the role before Smith got it?

I'd really like a black Doctor. Especially if Idris Elba was that said Doctor.

I've been a big fan of Elba since I first saw him in Ultraviolet back in '98 but I just can't see him as the Doctor

Yes, due largely to something Neil Gaiman said on Tumblr a few years ago. He named Patterson Joseph as his choice, but then says a black actor was offered the role and turned it down, and the way Gaiman phrases it means that it almost certainly wasn't Joseph.

Neil Gaiman said:
I was rather disappointed that Paterson Joseph didn’t get it last time, although I’ve loved Matt’s Eleven.) And yes, I have no doubt there will be. (I know one black actor who was already offered the part of the Doctor, and who turned it down.

Depending on how much stock you can put into it, here's a Mirror article on the subject.

The rumor I've heard on Ejiofor is that he and the BBC couldn't come to a deal. He would only commit to a single season, while the BBC wanted a longer contract. (Matt Smith, remember, signed a three series contract.)

Ejifor, Elba and David Oyelowo are probably too famous now to do it. Elba is also too much of a traditional hunky leading man, IMHO. Adrian Lester would be a potentially interesting choice. Not obviously quirky in the way Matt Smith or Tom Baker but neither are Chris Eccleston or Peter Capaldi.

I loved Paterson Joseph in Peep Show but have never been able to see him as the Doctor. I think most of his advocates for the role say so on the strength of Neverwhere and Survivors, neither of which I could get into. I must admit, I outright hated his performance in Jekyll, written by Moffat.

What about Richard Ayoade? Too typecast as a nerd after The IT Crowd?

I think they could dig a little deeper. I see no reason that the doctor needs to continue to be a man. A black female doctor with a male companion. Women can be doctors now too I hear.

Wow, does that ever sound patronizing.

Why is it only blacks being mentioned for diversity? Doesn't England have more Indian/Pakistanis?

^ Well, Moffat did actually say 'non-whites', which would include people from the Indian subcontinent as well as black people.

He then immediately says he has no problem with making the Doctor black. And that we'll see blacks where they won't have historically been. Everyone's suggestions are all black actors or mention blacks specifically.

^ I just took that to be because it's easier to say black than non-white each time; he's put it in context, after all.

*Yes, I know it's only one extra syllable but somehow it just feels easier and more natural to say 'black' than 'non-white' each time. IMHO, anyway.

Indeed we do, which is why I think we should have an individual with that heritage as either the Doctor, a Companion or that other ongoing British series that is mentioned when discussing diversity and then focusing on individuals whose heritage is African, Bond!

In a similar vein, I would like to see more of the Earth-bound episodes set in places outside of Europe & the U.S. Maybe the next big publicity push should be shooting a story on location in China or something!

Not that they need to tick a box or anything. But for a show about travel, I would like to see something a bit more exotic for an Earth-bound story. They've already done the U.K. to death (understandably so since that's where it's filmed). Europe has come up a few times (albeit with Croatia standing in for Italy in "The Vampires of Venice" & France in "Vincent & the Doctor"). They've done the U.S. a few times but, as an American myself, that's not particularly interesting to me.

Yes, definitely. Let's explore more world history. Going on location to China would be great -- they have some incredibly gorgeous locations, and a huge film studio that's got an extensive historical backlot the show could use -- but I'd be happy with a broader look at world history even if it were shot in Cardiff. There's so much more to the world than Europe and America.

I might be in the minority...but I wish the episodes on (present day) earth would go away for at least one season. For me Doctor Who is at its best when it actually goes places and doesn't stumble around "in our backyard".
