That's great, KM. I love irises. I wish they stayed in bloom longer. The first one appears to be a peony (is it?)---it used to creep me out that they would be covered in ants all the time!

Yeah, it's a peony. The ants are a big problem. They seem to love peonies more than any other flower. :scream:

My mom heard somewhere that the ants are beneficial, but I don't see how "eating the buds" is beneficial.

The flowers are gorgeous. We only have azaleas right now, and one insane poppy. What zone are you in that the peonies and irises are out already?

I haven't had a lot of time to post or do much of anything else other than be a Dad, but here's a new one of the munchkin. She's 6 weeks old here.

Is it weird for me to say that I can already see your wife in her? Because that totally struck me when I saw this pic. What a cutie!

Not weird at all considering how she looked as a baby:

My second son Aaron Liam was born today at 9:36 am and weights 7 lbs.

Congratulations!

Not sure what number the zone is, but I'm between Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, if that helps. Right on the edge of a climate that can support lemon and fig trees (mom has both).

A master gardener once told me that the ants are attracted to the sweet juice a peony bud has on it, and that after it is opened they are history. I don't think they do any damage, but I could be wrong. :)

I'm in Georgia, and my peonies are blooming too. Or rather, my white peonies are in the late stages of blooming, and the pink ones are about to open. Here's a pic of one of my peonies that I brought in to the office last week to keep me company:

My irises have been hit and miss this year. I think they're getting too crowded. And they're all over the yard. I think Grandma just randomly tossed the roots in the yard, and they just grew there. This year, after they've all bloomed, I want to dig them up and move them to more strategic locations. I'd like to be able to mow the lawn without having to detour around clumps of iris!

I have a couple lilies in the yard that do well this time of year, too. I'm not sure the pink one will bloom this year, though. My dad accidentally "topped" it with the weed-eater last night. :( It didn't have a bud on it yet, so it might put back out, but I kinda doubt it. It normally grows to about 4 ft tall before blooming. I have some red - I would even say crimson - lilies that are a smaller variety, and the first bloom appeared this morning when I left.

The yard is so random. I can't wait to rearrange it, but at the same time, I'll miss the surprise! factor of having flowers appear in strange places. :D

Regarding ants and peonies: not sure, but it could be the same situation as with TRUMPET VINE. The ants are actually needed to eat whatever it is on the flower buds. This helps the buds to open up their flowers. Or something like that. I think i remember reading this for peonies as well.

Our brand new lilac bush has put out some magnificent and huge flowers, which is pretty amazing as the bush itself is just a itty bitty thing.
