They're back to swinging for the fences in every goddamn at-bat. I'm not sure the return of a broken Kris Bryant is going to be the panacea the team hopes it is, either, considering the giant hole he's had in his swing all year.

I just want the Cubs to get off the Chatwood train. I'd be fine with trotting him out there every fifth game if they had, like, a 14-game lead in the division. But one cold streak combined with a Brewers hot streak changes everything. I mean, at what point, Theo, do you say "fuck it," DFA Chatwood, have Montgomery in the rotation full-time, call up some AAA jobber to work mop-up duty and order Smyly to start his rehab assignment so he can be in the bullpen in September?

To a man, at least this series, they've been looking at decent pitches and swinging at crap...every game. They still manage to make average pitchers look like Cy Young reborn. Sure, some of the Pirate pitchers have damn good stuff, but not all of them.

And.... the Astros reminded everyone they are the defending WS champs, and took the lead back. Both Maneaea and Verlander got beat up, but the A's just couldn't hold on in the late innings. Still, winning back to back series against their main rivals is a nice achievement. Now we need to handle the also-rans in the division and not lose focus.
 
In the AL East with Boston, the Orioles are now 50.5 games back. How much further could they creep up (down?) the all time list?

Jeez, the Phillies are on this list 6 times, plus the Philadelphia A's 3 times.

Nice gesture by Khris Davis, who deserves to be in the AL MVP discussion. He won’t win it, but he deserves some votes.

Edit: The Nationals have traded Daniel Murphy to the Cubs and Matt Adams to the Cardinals. Does this mean the Nationals are giving up?
 
Damn, you beat me to it on the Murphy and Adams trades. I'm surprised the Cubs traded for Murphy. They don't really have much room for him, especially when Bryant returns. Granted Murphy isn't as hot he once was thanks to old age and surgery, but he's still valuable bat that shouldn't be wasted on the bench.

Yeah, that was adorable. I love it when players connect with fans like that, especially the young ones. :D
 
The Cubs gave up a minor leaguer I never heard of, plus some cash for Murphy. They were at 39 for the MLB roster, and maybe they send a pitcher down for a couple weeks to make room on the 25.

Bryce Harper was also on revocable waivers, but I'm not sure if anyone took a shot at him :lol:

They still have a puncher's chance, and the team isn't going to say they're done, but even the usually optimistic Thomas Boswell wrote a column this week saying it's bleak and you find few hopeful fans. They dipped below .500 and would have to climb over five teams just to make the second wild card, now. They do have Strasburg back, and he will pitch one of the Philly games this week. After the three with Philly here, they have six more against them: three next week in Philly, then three more here in September. Obviously, they could help themselves in the division if they beat them up. But one big problem they have in trying to win the division without help is they play the Braves only three more times, and those games are in Atlanta. September isn't too easy for them, either. Besides the three each with the Braves and Phillies, they play the Marlins two more times and have four against the Mets, but they also play the Brewers, Cards, Cubs, and Rockies, who will maneuvering for playoff spots themselves. They do at least host those Central teams.

Not too many folks think much of Dave Martinez as a manager, either. It's just been an odd year. Harper's down, Strasburg was injured, the bullpen stinks and was mismanaged to boot, and there are those who say the team misses Jayson Werth's clubhouse leadership.

What makes it worse is this was a team that knew its window is closing, not opening, but was still optimistic that it was a 95 game win team going into the season. Now, you hear laments about the firing of Dusty Baker. Martinez was chosen because he was expected to be a better playoff manager than Baker and get the Nats over the hump. But you have to make the playoffs, first.

The best part was after it came up in interviews for a few days after he said it, he started whining and said he wasn't going to discuss it any further.
 
During the Braves first game in Miami, Acuña got his revenge and hit a home run...only to get hit by another pitch, this time by reliever Javy Guerra, who claimed after the game that it wasn't intentional. Unfortunately, that didn't stop Sean Newcomb from retaliating the following inning by hitting Brian Anderson.
