OH MY GOD <Favorite Team> PUT <Star Player> ON WAIVERS WHAT THE FUCK!?!
emot-supaburn.gif

The non-waiver Trade Deadline is considered the height of summer transaction season, but trades do not stop on July 31. However, in order to deal a player on its 40-man roster after that date, a team must go through the waiver system.

How do August trades work? Here's a primer:
• It's important to note that teams expose most of their players, except those on the disabled list, to revocable waivers at some point during August. So that act, by itself, does not mean much, as there is no risk involved.
• When a player is on waivers, other teams can submit a claim. If more than one team does, those in the same league as that player's team get first priority, starting with the club with the worst record on the day of the claim. Then, the priority moves to the other league, starting with the worst record. For example, if a National League team puts a player on waivers, the NL team with the worst record gets the first shot at him, and the last-place American League club would be right behind the top NL club.
• Once a player is claimed, his team faces three options. It can pull the player back and keep him, negotiate a trade with the claiming team or let the player go. In the last scenario, the claiming team takes full responsibility for the player's remaining salary. If the two sides decide to work out a trade, they have two days to do so.
• If a player goes unclaimed for two days, he "passes through" waivers. His team then can trade him to any other team for the rest of the season, unless he has a no-trade clause, a limited no-trade provision or 10/5 rights (10 years in the Majors, five consecutive years with his current team).
• Players dealt after Aug. 31 are not eligible to participate in the postseason.
• A team can pull a player back from waivers only once. So if a player is pulled back but then placed on waivers a second time and claimed, his rights go to the team that is awarded the claim.

tl;dr - your favorite player isn't going anywhere*

The A's are tied for second in the AL West (5 games behind Houston and the second wild card with 10 more games against the Mariners and 6 more against the Astros. They also have a three game series with the Yankees in September.

No matter how the season turns out, them being competitive in AUGUST was not something I expected. They could play .500 ball going forward and still win 90 games. Wow.

Bob Melvin deserves to be AL Manager of the Year, though Scott Service will probably get it due to Robinson Cano being suspended. That the A’s could win ninety games despite losing multiple pitchers to TJ surgery is amazing.

This kind of magic is what makes being an A's fan so fun. They can piece and pinch and tape and spit and gum together something, and when it takes hold- BOOM!
They better extend Khris Davis, though. That man deserves to be an A for a long, long time.

I agree. I felt differently a year ago, but he’s put together an excellent season. I’m hoping for an A’s-Phillies World Series, not only because they happen to be my two favorite teams, but also because they’re ahead of schedule. I’d like to see them get as far as they can.

Yeah, let's not pretend that the Cardinals are a small-market, low-budget team. Bill DeWitt's personal net worth is nearly $2 billion.

I think that perception comes from the Cardinals being much more conservative with respect to the types of players they pursue in free-agency. They definitely have money to spend.

Absolutely the Cards have money, but they don't throw it around like the Yanks. It seemed like it had changed in NY for a while, but they're back at it and trading young guys away.

John J. Fisher? 2.8 billion. Yet his team plays in a toilet that has overflowing toilets.

There is a lot missing from this data (TV revenue, overhead, payroll tax) but it's still enlightening.

Yeah, I'd take that chart with a grain of salt, because in addition to the operating expenses and the incremental revenue (like TV) you mentioned, it's also missing revenue-sharing payouts and receipts.

Mike Scioscia to Step Down at Season’s End

It was bound to happen eventually, as the Angels haven’t been to the postseason since 2014 and have underachieved this season. Which analytics guru gets this job?

If memory serves, Scioscia's resignation now leaves Bochy as the longest-tenured manager in MLB (I think Scioscia was hired in ... 2000?). Billy Eppler isn't known as a huge analytics guy, but he's going to probably lean towards a player-friendly manager in order to keep Trout happy. I'd figure guys like Girardi, Sandy Alomar and Chris Woodward will be in the conversation, but I would not be shocked in the slightest to see them hire someone like Darin Erstad or even a more out-of-nowhere candidate like Mark DeRosa (who has interviewed for both the Mets and Braves vacancies, and has made it rather clear he's only doing broadcast work for the paycheck).

It's time for Scioscia to go.

He's had a decent run, and this season it's not his fault that every single player we have is injured. But it's time for some new blood.

Darin Erstad is a very interesting choice.

Darin Erstad is a very interesting choice.

Given the trend that's been evolving over the past decade-plus (really pioneered by the A's back in the early 2000s), with the field manager being little more than a mouthpiece for increasingly involved front offices, and the success that Aaron Boone has had with the Yankees and especially Alex Cora with the Red Sox, I think you're going to see an increasing number of teams taking a chance on retired players with little or no coaching / managing experience, because they're used to taking direction, not giving it.

I mean, Cora only had literally a year of coaching under his belt, Aaron Boone went straight to the broadcast booth after he retired, Craig Counsell had a sinecure job with the Brewers' front office and then went into broadcasting before replacing Ron Roenicke, Scott Servais had a sinecure position with the Angels and then went straight to managing the Mariners without any coaching experience whatsoever because Jerry Dipoto fucking loves the guy ... you get the idea.

I just have a strong sense that the days of fiery red-ass managers with strong opinions about where a team should be going--I'm thinking the Buck Showalter / Don Mattingly / Davey Martinez variety--are going to go away, at least for a little while. When Brian Cashman, the king of being hands-off and letting managers do their thing, of all people, is saying that front offices deserve to be much more heavily involved with what happens on the field, you know there's an era shift in progress.
